Xander had never been one to take the direct approach. He didn’t really know why – maybe he was just girly like that, or a response to all the rejections he’d received as a teenage loser – but it was the way he was.

He’d ended up having to explain in very clear terms why he wanted to stay in Atlantis. To Giles. Man, that’d been awkward. While not a homophobe, far from it after living with the gang for years, Giles had still needed convincing that it was a good enough reason to stay. Luckily the girls had gone into full Support Mode and bullied the flustered watcher into agreement.

Willow had quickly gotten over her shock that her lifelong friend was interested in another guy and demanded to know if there had been smoochies – and was rather grumpy at finding out there hadn’t been any yet. Buffy’s only reaction had been: So, bi now? You’re sure he’s not a demon?

All the girls had advice on how to get the scientist’s attention.

Xander decided to go about it his own way.

He hadn’t entirely figured it out what that was, but it was his way.

So he began hanging around the labs, fixing things and playing Errand Boy. Things broke at a surprisingly quick rate that it was hard to keep up, but he made sure McKay always had everything he needed…

Which might have been what prompted the genius to angrily march over and start ranting at him.

“Okay, what are you trying to do!?” Dr. McKay demanded, “I need the apparatus fixed, you’re there! The mice get out, you’re there! I need lunch brought up, you’re there! What is it that you want!? Why are you being so damn helpful!?”

Of course, having a preference for indirectness did not mean he couldn’t be direct when the situation called for it.

He grabbed McKay roughly by the shoulders, looked him in the eye, and kissed him squarely on the mouth.

He broke away quickly to look at McKay’s astonished expression, which slowly blinked and formed a mumbled, “oh.”

Xander briefly wondered if he’d ruined everything, but then watched as the scientist’s face contorted into a hilariously goofy grin.

“You call yourself a genius?” Xander asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Hey!” McKay said, indignant.

But he was still grinning as he leaned in for another kiss.
