Prelude: An Invitation

The Family You Choose

By: Dreamfall

Rating: FR13/PG13

Disclaimer: I own neither Stargate: SG1 nor BtVS.

Spoilers: Takes place post Season 7 for Buffy, and early Season 6 for Stargate: SG1, which makes it June of '03 for both.

Author's Note: My Stargate canon is neither fresh nor complete, so forgive any lapses I may make. The challenge caught my attention, and I went 'ooh, I could have some fun with that', even though SG1 isn't really one of my fandoms.

Challenge BuffyCharmed's The Problem Child Challenge.

Prelude
An Invitation

“So, if I understand correctly, sir, the whole town collapsed into a cavern,” Sam said doubtfully.

“Yes.”

“It was on a major fault line?”

“No.”

“Minor fault line?”

“It was actually between lines, from what I understand.”

“And yet there was an earthquake, which caused the entire town to collapse into a cavern?”

“Yes.”

She hesitated for a long moment, then shook her head. “Okay, sir, I give up. Why are you telling me this?”

“The president ordered that a scientific team be put together to try to establish the sequence of events leading to the collapse. Your name was on the list of those to be contacted about possible membership in the team. I was ... requested to present you with the information and see if you were interested in being part of the team.”

She stared at him blankly for a long moment, then shook her head. “This is really not a good time for me, sir.”

“I understand that, Major Carter. This isn’t a good time for any of us. Do you wish to participate in this scientific survey?”

“No. Sir.”

“Very well, Major Carter, I’ll inform the head of the team of your decision. Dismissed.”

She snapped a salute, turned, and headed for the door, wanting to immerse herself back in her work before the memories of Daniel’s recent loss washed back over her. Unsurprisingly, she wasn’t fast enough, but she managed to lose herself in astrophysics before the memories numbed her brain to the point where she couldn’t focus.
