Summary: In some realities things didn’t work out so well for Willow and Kennedy.

By Dave Turner.

“Once you fall for Willow, you stay fallen.”
The wisdom of Xander Harris.

Kennedy staggered up the last flight of stairs and stood swaying slightly on the landing, she took another pull from the vodka bottle in her hand, and then kicked open the door in front of her. She stumbled out onto the roof the cold night air hitting her like a bucket of ice water. She took another slug of vodka to keep the cold at bay.

She walked unsteadily over to the edge of the roof and looked down at the ant-like people and toy cars that passed in the street below. Kennedy looked out at the city lights and the dark blue expanse of Lake Erie and wondered at what had brought her to this point. Standing on the roof of some office block in the middle of the night with a half-filled bottle of vodka in her hand, she choked back a sob and sat down on the low wall that ran around the edge of the roof.

Everything had started out so full of hope, The First was gone, there were so many Slayers in the world, thanks to Willow’s spell, that they could all dare to hope to live long and fulfilling lives.

The time she and Willow had spent in South America had been the happiest of her life; they had the money to live comfortably, which they did. They spent their days collecting the new Slayers and either sending them off to be trained, or training them themselves. Explaining to the older women and girls the changes they’d experienced and what to expect out of life from this point onward. At night they’d go out and hunt and then party in one of the many bars or clubs they had become known at.

Even then they were starting to drift apart; when she thought about it now she should have seen it coming. The little disagreements that grew into full blown arguments. The differences of opinion about how to go about their work, the long silences over the breakfast table.

But even then Kennedy loved Willow and she had been sure that Willow loved her, she would have staked her life on that one fact; that whatever their differences they loved each other and they would be able to work things out. Wasn’t that what relationships were about? Learning about each other and learning to accommodate those differences.

Then they had to move back to Cleveland.

Buffy had wanted her best friend and most powerful Witch back within easy reach. Kennedy’s and Buffy’s relationship had never been what you might have called ‘close’. Kennedy admitted to herself that she hadn’t helped the situation, but then again neither had Buffy.

Kennedy still thought of Buffy as a bossy bitch who just wanted her old ‘sidekick’ back and under her control. No doubt Buffy thought of Kennedy as the spoiled rich brat who had forced herself on Willow and tried to use the relationship as an ‘in’ to the inner circle of Scoobies.

Willow’s old friends hadn’t helped; Xander would always support Willow, at least in public what he said to her in private was anyone’s guess. Giles kept strictly neutral which hindered more than helped, and Dawn…Well Dawn was Buffy’s sister so what would you expect? Strangely only Faith had tried to see both sides of the argument, but she had troubles of her own.

None of them really knew the ‘grown-up’ Willow like Kennedy did, they still thought of her as an insecure teenager. They didn’t know half the stuff she’d done over the years, or the things she tried to hide from everyone. They certainly didn’t know Kennedy as she was now, a lonely girl who just wanted a ‘Happy Ending’.

A blast of cold wind blew off the lake and through Kennedy’s thin jacket and made her shiver; she put the bottle to her lips and drained about half the remaining liquid. No the whispering campaign conducted by Buffy against her had poisoned any attempt at patching up whatever differences Willow and she may have had. She saw that now, but did Buffy have to turn the trainee’s against her? Training people was hard enough without someone undermining your authority.

Then there had been that final awful day, the day Kennedy’s whole world had collapsed around her. She had gone home unexpectedly one lunchtime to find Willow already there and packing her clothes and personnel belongings into boxes and cases.

“Can’t we talk this over?” Pleaded Kennedy as Willow walked around the apartment collecting up her things. She didn’t answer.

“Was it something I said or did?” Kennedy asked Willow’s silent back as she bent over a box, “We can work this out whatever it is!” Kennedy insisted, still Willow remained silent.

“Please…Willow…Please don’t just leave me hanging here,” Begged Kennedy as the tears started to fill her eye’s.

Willow turned to walk towards the door carrying a case in her hand; Kennedy moved to intercept her before she could leave the apartment. She reached out to catch Willow’s arm and make her face her. She knew, just knew that if she could look into those green eyes once more she’d be able to make things alright again.

Kennedy’s hand touched Willow’s arm and she found herself flying through the air and crashing into the wall, but at least Willow stopped and looked at her.

“Never touch me again.” Said Willow coldly, “Xander will be ‘round to pick up the rest of my things.” With that she turned on her heel and walked out the door.

“WILLOW!” Cried Kennedy sobbing from the floor, “Please don’t leave me I lo…” her voice broke into uncontrollable sobs.

Kennedy lifted up the bottle and studied the remaining liquid, only a few more swallows left. She looked over towards the door and wondered if anyone would bother trying to find her before it was too late…somehow she doubted it. Slowly she stood up and stepped to the edge, she lifted the bottle as if making a toast.

“It was nice to know that you were there,” She put the bottle to her lips and drank, “Thanks for acting like you cared!”

She swayed a little and wind-milled her arms to keep her balance, there was still vodka left in the bottle, she didn’t want to waste it.

“An’…an’ making me feel like I was the only one…” Another slug of vodka, she looked at the bottle, “Nearly done.” She muttered.

“We could have had it all,” She glanced over at the door willing ‘her’ to be there, the doorway remained deserted.

“Wonder if you can watch me as I fall?” She asked the night, “Or let me know why we’re done…”

She drained the last drops from the bottle and threw it to one side.

“All this time you were you pretending,” She cried, “So much for my happy ending.”

Kennedy stepped into the darkness.

My Happy Ending
Avril Lavigne

So much for my happy ending
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh

Let's talk this over
It's not like we're dead
Was it something I did?
Was it something you said?
Don't leave me hanging
In a city so dead
Held up so high
On such a breakable thread

You were all the things I thought I knew
And I thought we could be

You were everything, everything that I wanted
We were meant to be, supposed to be, but we lost it
And all of the memories, so close to me, just fade away
All this time you were pretending
So much for my happy ending
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh

You've got your dumb friends
I know what they say
They tell you I'm difficult
But so are they
But they don't know me
Do they even know you?
All the things you hide from me
All the shit that you do

You were all the things I thought I knew
And I thought we could be

It's nice to know that you were there
Thanks for acting like you cared
And making me feel like I was the only one
It's nice to know we had it all
Thanks for watching as I fall
And letting me know we were done

[Chorus Twice]
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
So much for my happy ending

Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
