Little Lost One

Cassie dug the toe of her sneaker into the sand beneath the swing and pushed herself backwards as she rested her head against the metal chain and wondered just how long she’d be grounded for if her mom found out she’d snuck out to meet Dominic.

“A lost child. Alone in this world.” The voice behind her rose in pitch, almost singsong. “But not of this world.”

She stood and spun, eyes falling on a dark haired woman stepping gingerly through the sand. Her hands fisted in the front a white empire waist gown baring slippered feet as she made her way toward Cassie.

The teenager took a step back and swallowed, “C-can I help you?”

Her head rose and wide brown eyes settled on Cassie but they seemed to look thought the teenager rather than at her. “Little lost one, do you know the way home?”

“I’m not lost.”

“That’s not what the stars whisper.” The woman’s head cocked, “They call for you. They want you to come home.”

Cassie’s lips dipped, “I am home.”

“Are you certain? The stars rarely lie.”

“I-I should go.”

“Home?” Cassie nodded and the woman’s pale lips spread into a smile, “I agree.”

The End.
