The Cosmos Doesn’t LaughShe hears them.
Voices.
They whisper and shout, sing and moan filling her head up enough so that her steps become a dance and she twists and bends her way through the nearly vacant halls of Serenity. The ships speaks too sometimes, her voice is soft, it murmurs and coos and she’s always watching, always listening to her crew and family. River pauses in her dance, flattens her palm against the cool metal hull and her head inclines as she listens to the newest voice that has joined chorus in her head.
A soothing voice.
He mummers like Serenity and calms the frazzled edges the other voices leave behind when they disperse like atoms. Molecules that shatter and break, exploding across the cosmos in a kaleidoscope of color and sound that only River can hear. Her head rolls forward, long hair falling forward, in loose twisting spirals that canopy her face as she smiles with this new, old voice.
He is old.
She knows this and yet, he’s young, so very young and he laughs. The other voices don’t laugh. They shout and whisper, but they don’t make her smile like he does.
He’s ascended.
He’s her friend.
He’s Daniel.
The end.
