A/N: This is right after Dawn finds out she is the key. I only change two things—one, she doesn’t run away from home, but she does cut herself and asks the people at Buffy’s birthday party if her blood is real; two, Glory doesn’t even know who Dawn is. (Joyce is still alive. This is the day after she finds out she’s the key.)
“Why?” Joyce almost yelled. She sat at the dining room table across from Rupert Giles. The blonde Slayer, Buffy, sat beside Giles, her Watcher. She had a hard time comprehending what was going on though. The youngest one of the family, Dawn, lay up in her room doing homework while her headphones were on.
“Because if Glory finds out Dawn is the key she will take Dawn away. It is better if she is secluded in England. It is less likely she will be found there. Plus, Glory’s never even heard of Dawn before” Giles stated.
“She will not be going anywhere” Joyce stated. Her voice was sudden and firm.
“No, she won’t. She will be here with us, with me. I’m the Slayer, I can protect her. I don’t need some old guy, who isn’t even able to fight, protect her. What are they gonna do? Throw their can at him? Woo, that’s gonna stop Glory from hurting her!” Buffy almost screamed.
“What’s going on?” Dawn asked meekly. She had tiptoed down the stairs a few moments ago to do who-knows-what. She was always spying on people, trying to find out the good, juicy info.
“Nothing, honey. Go back up to your room and do your homework” Joyce said politely.
“I already finished” Dawn said.
“Well, uh, go watch TV then.”
“Nothing good’s on” she then glanced around the room at the others as they looked at her. “Oh, I get the hint. I’ll be out of your way. I’m going over Janice’s house” she said.
“Dawn” Joyce called.
“No, it’s only five o’ clock. I’ll be home before sundown” she kissed her mother on the cheek and left.
“I don’t think I can let her go” Joyce said
“Joyce” Giles said as he took off his glasses and started to clean them. “You have too. I think she’ll be much safer at Hogwarts.”
“Hogwarts?” Buffy asked. “Is that the guy’s name?”
“No, it’s a school. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry” Giles explained.
“No!” Buffy shouted. “My sister doesn’t need to hang around people that will influence her to do magic. Willow is a good witch; some of them might be bad!”
“Buffy” Giles said, trying to calm her down. “She will be perfectly safe. The school is hidden and nobody can tell what it is unless it’s a wizard or witch. Otherwise it looks like a rundown shack.”
“Giles! No! She’s not going” Buffy argued. Her mother stood there the whole time contemplating both sides.
“Yes, Buffy. She is” her mother answered.
