Chapter Three.

3. Kennedy’s Story.

Kennedy lay on her side; her head propped up on her arm as she watched Willow sleep. She reached out and gently brushed away some strands of red hair. Kennedy smiled as she studied her lover’s face, the perfect nose, the freckles, the lips that were parted just a little as she breathed softly in her sleep.

“I never told you about Debbie, did I?” Kennedy asked her sleeping lover. “She was the first woman I ever made love to…she was my first ‘true-love’. Let me explain.” Kennedy shifted slightly on the bed getting into a more comfortable position.

“I told you I went to school in England right? Well this meant going home for the holidays was a real bore. You see all my friends were in England or scattered ‘round the world. I was never close to my half-sister; she’s what, four or five years younger than me. So, there was no way I was going to spend anymore time with her than I had to.

My mother didn’t really have any time for me either. Sure, she was glad to see me home…for a day or two. Then I’d sort of get in her way and spoil her busy round of shopping, and coffee mornings and parties. Dad was always working so I hardly ever saw him. By the end of the summer I was glad to get back to school.

Then when I was seventeen I was home on vacation and I met Debbie on the beach one day. She was three or four years older than me and she seemed so grown-up and sophisticated. She was at university somewhere and was training to be some kind of therapist or something.

She had this beat-up old sports car with a fold down roof and torn upholstery. We used to go for drives along the highway near the coast and stay in motels overnight. I used to tell my mother that we were visiting ‘places of interest’. Yeah sure we used to go and take a few snaps and pick up some leaflets just in case my mother wanted to see where I’d been. She never did though.

What we’d really do is drive off somewhere no one knew us and stay out all night making love in the back of her car or renting a room somewhere. It was the best summer I’d ever had and I wished it would never end, but…

It was a week or so before I had to go back to school and we’d been planning one last trip away. I went down to meet her one morning and she was gone. I waited and waited for her to show up but she never did. I asked around and no one had seen her or knew were she was. Eventually I went home, you just wouldn’t believe how heart broken I was…but then knowing your life maybe you would.

So, anyway I got over it, or at least I told myself I had, I went back to school. Next thing I knew my Watcher got killed by the Bringers and Mr. Giles found me and took me back to Sunnydale where I met this really hot, cute redhead.”

Kennedy ran the back of her hand across Willow’s cheek making her lover stir in her sleep. Kennedy pulled up the covers and snuggled up close to Willow.

“You know,” whispered Kennedy, “Even after all these years I think sometimes I see her. Like I turn ‘round fast and I just catch a glimpse of her out the corner of my eye. Or, I catch sight of her battered old car in the rear view mirror. I think I even saw her at our wedding. I know, I know it’s silly and she couldn’t possibly know where I am, but…”

THE END.

Objects In The Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are.

The skies were pure and the fields were green

And the sun was brighter than it's ever been

When I grew up with my best friend Kenny

We were close as any brothers than you ever knew

It was always summer and the future called

We were ready for adventures and we wanted them all

And there was so much left to dream

And so much time to make it real

But I can still recall the sting of all

The tears when he was gone

They said he crashed and burned

I know I'll never learn

Why any boy should die so young

We were racing, we were soldiers of fortune

We got in trouble but we sure got around

There are times I think I see him peeling out of the dark

I think he's right behind me now and he's gaining ground

But it was long ago and it was far away,

Oh God it seems so very far

And if life is just a highway,

Then the soul is just a car

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

And when the sun descended and the night arose

I heard my father cursing everyone he knows

He was dangerous and drunk and defeated

And corroded by failure and envy and hate

There were endless winters and the dreams would freeze

Nowhere to hide and no leaves on the trees

And my father's eyes were blank

As he hit me again and again and again

I know I still believe he'd never let me leave,

I had to run away alone

So many threats and fears, so many wasted years

Before my life became my own

And though the nightmares should be over

Some of the terrors are still intact

I'll hear that ugly coarse and violent voice

And then he grabs me from behind

And then he pulls me back

But it was long ago and it was far away,

Oh God it seems so very far

And if life is just a highway,

Then the soul is just a car

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

There was a beauty living on the edge of town

And she always put the top up and the hammer down

And she taught me everything I'll ever know

About the mystery and the muscle of love

The stars would glimmer and the moon would glow

I'm in the back seat with my Julie like a Romeo

And the signs along the highway all said,

Caution! Kids At Play!

Those were the rights of spring and we did everything

There was salvation every night

We got our dreams reborn and our upholstery torn

But everything we tried was right

She used her body just like a bandage,

She used my body just like a wound

I'll probably never know where she disappeared

But I can see her rising up out of the back seat now

Just like an angel rising up from a tomb

But it was long ago and it was far away,

Oh God it seems so very far

And if life is just a highway,

Then the soul is just a car

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

And objects in the rear view mirror

May appear closer than they are

She used her body just like a bandage,

She used my body just like a wound

I'll probably never know where she disappeared

But I can see her rising up out of the back seat now
