Conversations and Explanations, pt 2
Before I begin:
I am soooo very sorry that this chapter has taken me so long to write. For those of you who are still reading this and my other stories- THANK YOU. This chapter is dedicated to all of you.
For those of you who are new- Thank you for reading. I do not plan to stop writing this but I have been struggling with my last two years in a rigorous University program, three family deaths, a crashed hard drive (I am lucky I had earlier copies and several things already published or I would have lost everything), and starting out into my chosen career path while living on my own for the first time in my life. Updates are NOT frequent and are NOT assured. Sorry.Conversations and Explanations pt 2
Last time:“… the one I work for is considerably more powerful than Mephistoles actually.”
“And it would be who, Giles?” Willow prodded.
Giles looked pensively down at his teacup, as if seeing something in it no one could see. After a long moment of silence, he said quietly, “Eyghon…”
Buffy was the first to break the silence. “This wouldn’t be the same Egghead guy that Ethan was trying to sacrifice me to was it?” The cold tone in her voice had the room’s attention focused instantly on her body language. Instead of leaning against the wall with her arms crossed over her chest as she had been before, Buffy stood upright and slightly leaned forward. It was a position that would easily allow her to jump into slay mode if she deemed it necessary.
Spike immediately moved behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist while whispering in her ear. “Easy love. Calm. If he really is a rider, I can’t back you up. Let him explain, love. That’s it, calm.” He continued on like this until Buffy’s weight shifted back, though her body remained tense and her eyes wary.
Giles sighed to himself, hurt by his slayer’s sudden distrust. “Yes.” He told her, his voice heavy with regret and emotional turmoil.
By this time each of those close to him had become lost in their own thoughts. Buffy was almost primal in her need to destroy the darkness or join the hunt- the two conflicting instincts warring with her human feeling of fear. Spike was doing his hardest to both squish the part of him that was screaming to flee and continue calming a slayer that was almost feral.
The others were only surprised with the revelation of Eyghon’s involvement, though now they could form a more complete story from what little they had learned through the years. Willow felt only acceptance and understanding. She realized that being a Rider had always been a part of him and now she could she that he sent her to stay with the coven because he understood how hard it was to fight a darkness that attacked from the inside. Xander’s thoughts, were clear and divided, both positive and negative. Part of him wanted to pat Giles on the back and say “That is so COOL, G-man.” Another, larger, part of him was hurt that the man he looked upon as a father had kept such an integral part of his being from the rest of the group.
Johnny had heard of other’s like him through his travels, so the names meant nothing and the information came as no surprise. What worried him more was the inner turmoil he could see on the face of the first person Zarathos had deemed ‘innocent’ in some time. The call the two had felt had definitely been coming from the boy but neither could think of what it meant.
The silence in the room had stretched thin at this point- everyone wanted to say something but none of them knew where to begin. Finally, Willow broke the silence with a simple word. “How?”
Giles chuckled, it was deep and dark and unearthly. “Ever the curious one aren’t you, Willow?” She bowed her head and blushed. “I, like most people who find themselves in my predicament, met a devil and made a deal to save a life. You all know of my past with dark magic. The group I was in, we knew Eyghon was powerful to be considered a devil. But we didn’t care. We were reckless teenagers and the most important thing in the world was the rush. We didn’t realized how deep over our heads we had gone. The last time we met up to call on Eyghon, we lost control. You know that Eyghon remained on the body of Randall that night but not all of us were able to get away unscathed. Paige and Thomas quickly ran and I wasn’t far behind when I realized that Ethan wasn’t following me. I found, when I went back for him, that he had been knocked unconscious somehow and Eyghon was about to kill him as well. I couldn’t let that happen- Ethan and I were... too... close.”
Giles was too far gone in his memories to realize the others had been hanging on his words. Buffy had even calmed in light of finally hearing the truth about her Watcher’s mysterious past. Johnny realized the four would not be satisfied until they heard the rest. “You made a deal.” He spoke quietly but those in the room still started in surprise.
Giles looked at him and blinked slowly as his awareness pulled him back into the present. He nodded “To save his life, yes.”
His response instantly put Buffy back on edge. “You made a deal with a demon?” she spat at him.
“No. I made a deal with a devil.”
As a final note: I am having difficulty figuring out where to go from here. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please leave a review or send me a message with them. Thanks so much for your patience and support!
