Chapter One

I own none of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer characters or the Firefly characters. They all belong to Joss Whedon.

Dawn hit the ground hard as one of the Fulkan demons hit her in the chest. It's long talons slashed her, causing her to bleed. She kicked the dark blue demon with the giant teeth in the knee, knocking it to the ground. She got back up and looked around. She and Buffy were surrounded by four Fulkan demons and a sorcerer who was chanting at them.

The night had started out innocently enough. She and Buffy had gone out to eat and had seen an Italian movie. It had been the first time in a long time the two of them just hung out and relaxed. They had been on the way back to their apartment when the demons attacked them.

Dawn. picked up her dropped stake and rammed it into the demon's heart. These things definitely weren't vampires, but the staking still killed it. She looked over at Buffy. Her sister had taken out two of the demons, and was busy fighting the fourth one. She looked over at the sorcerer. He was wearing a hood so she couldn't see his face. He was chanting in Greek, and blue energy was forming in his hands.

A wave of intuition hit her like a ton of bricks. He was going to kill Buffy. She didn't know how she knew, but she did. She tried to scream out a warning but her voice wouldn't work. She flashed back to the fateful night three years ago, when Buffy had died to save her. It was a night that still haunted her in her dream. She should have died that night, not Buffy.

She ran and jumped in front of Buffy just as the sorcerer let the energy go. It hit her straight in the chest. She screamed as bolts of pain shot through her body. She could hear Buffy screaming her name as she fell. As she fell, a white light surrounded her, and it grew brighter and brighter as she got closer and closer to the ground. She closed her eyes and braced herself for the death that would come when she hit the ground.

"Dawn? Dawn are you alright?"

Memories flooded her mind, making her scream. Memories of her as a little girl, playing with a boy named Simon and a girl named River. Memories of going to the Academy with River, and having her brain cut open. Memories of being made to fight until she collapsed in exhaustion. Memories of being rescued by Simon, and waking up on a ship called Serenity.

She opened her eyes. Simon and Kaylee were standing over her, looking worried. She looked around and saw the rest of the crew had stopped eating, and they were all staring at her. "Dawn, are you alright?" Simon asked again.

She got to her feet and backed against the wall. She shouldn't know who these people were. She had never seen them before in her life. "Buffy!" she screamed at the top of her lungs.

"Buffy's not here," River said. She walked in front of Dawn, cornering the terrified girl. She died a long time ago. Just like you should have."

"River!" Simon scolded.

"What are you?" River asked. She started crying and grasped her head. "Why are you here? You weren't here before. You came and you put fake memories in my head. You're not real."

"Stop it!" Dawn cried. She burst into tears. "Stop saying that."

"You're not real!" River screamed.

Dawn pushed past River and ran out of the room. River tried to chase after her, but Simon held her back.

Jayne shook his head at the scene. "Gorram moonbrain sisters never let us get through a meal in peace."
