"Angel gave this to me." Buffy said holding out the amulet.

"What is it?" Willow asked.

"Hey said it's powerful. Bestows strength to the right person who wears it." Buffy answered.

"And the right person is?" Xander asked cutting in.

"Someone ensouled, but stronger than human. A Champion. Like me."

"And Spike." Xander stated.

Buffy shoots him a dirty look then sighs. "And Spike."

Xander along with the Slayers, potentials and Spike were under the seal waiting for Willow's big spell.

Spike stepped up to Xander, holding up the amulet around his neck and spoke softly, "Not to be a buzz kill love, but my fabulous accessory isn't exactly tingling with power."

"I'm not worried." Xander lied, looking around nervously.

"I'm getting zero juice here..." Spike paused looking down at himself. "And I look like Elizabeth Taylor."

Xander turns and smiles at him. Spike returns his smile with a small one of his own.

"Cheer up Liz. If Willow's spell doesn't work, it won't matter what you wear." Faith said smirking as she walked past him towards the edge of the cliff to join Buffy.

"I'm not worried." They hear Buffy say as they approach her.

The SIT's fan out across the ledge, preparing for battle. They hear a bellowing of voices and growls. Looking down on the army of Turok-han vampires, the Army of The First.

"I'm not worried." Buffy repeats nervously.

"Really cause I'm flashing back to Xander's whole bathroom speech." Rona added, obviously terrified.

Xander looks to her and smiles reassuringly. "As long as Willow can work her spell before they..."

Below the Turok-han grow quiet as they all turn to look up at the Slayer and her army.

"...See us." Xander finished quietly.

The Turok-han roar and race toward them growling. Climbing the walls to get to them.

The battle begins.

Xander closes his eyes as he flashes back to Buffy's speech.

So here's the part where you make a choice. What if you could have that power... now?

He can feel the immense power Willow's using right above them.

I say we change the rules. I say my power should be our power.

Xander feeling something waking up inside his head. Something coming to life.

Tomorrow, Willow will use the essence of the scythe to change our destiny.

He could feel the power flowing through him. He can hear everything, feel everything. It's all so much.

Can stand up, will stand up. Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?

His eyes snap open, ready for the battle.

Even with the newly activated slayers, they were slowly losing the war. He turned to see Buffy go down, stabbed by a Turok-han, speaking to herself then getting back up.

"Hold the line!" Xander yells as the tide starts to turn against them. He sees Faith fall under multiple Turok-han.

"Oh bullocks... Xander!" Spike yelled as he's haloed in the center of glowing orange light.

Xander looks over at Spike in disbelief. "Spike!"

Before he can make a move towards Spike, the amulet suddenly flares, burning with the intensity of a thousand suns. Rays of pure energy flare outward, destroying any Turok-han that lie in its path.

Xander runs to Spike as the cavern starts to tremble, debri and rocks cascading from the ceiling.

"Everybody out now!" Faith yells.

The SIT's follow Faith out of the cavern, dashing up the stairs into the school. Buffy stays behind on the steps, watching her friends surrounded in an unearthly glow, desperately wanting to help.

"I can feel it Xander," Spike whispers.

"What?" Xander asks breathlessly.

"My soul." Spike says, his face pained. "It's really there. It kind of stings."

Xander looks desperately back at Buffy as the whole cavern quakes.

"Go on then." Spike tells Xander.

"No! No, you've done enough! You could still..." Xander tried to finish.

"No you've beaten them back. It's time for me to do the clean up." Spike says fiercely as the cavern starts to crumble around them.

"Xander! Come on!" Buffy calls down frantically. She takes one last look and flees into the school.

"You have to go love, Xander please." Spike pleaded.

"Spike! I'm not leaving you here."

"I mean it I gotta do this." Spike says holding out a hand.

The light around them flares. Xander reaches out his hand and entwines it with Spike's. A moment later their hands burst into flames.

Oh god, don't let it end like this. Xander thought looking into Spike's eyes.

"I love you."

"I know you do, I love you too." The ground shakes violently as more of the cavern falls away. "I'll always be with you love. Now go!" He says pushing Xander away from him.

He watches Xander run up the steps, looking back one last time with a tear streaked face.

"I'll always love you. I'm sorry." Spike whispers as his body burns away and the cavern collapses, sealing the Hellmouth forever.

Faith, Giles, Dawn, Willow and Buffy all gather around Xander at the edge of the crater.

"Looks like the Hellmouth is officially closed for business." Faith snarked.

"We saved the world." Dawn says.

"We changed the world. I can feel them. Slayers are awakening everywhere." Willow stated awed.

I feel them too Willow. I can feel everything. What am I supposed to do? Xander thought devastated.

"What did this?" Giles asked no one in particular, gesturing to the crater.

"Spike." Xander whispered. "Spike did it. He saved the world." And now he's gone.

Everyone looks at him sadly as they load onto the bus.

Hyperion Hotel

Willow walks down the steps and approaches Xander.

"Hey Xan, everyones settled in." Willow said sitting next to him, taking his hand in her own. "How're you doing?"

He looks at Willow with empty eyes and her heart breaks.

"He's gone." Xander sobs and Willow puts her arms around him, trying to give as much comfort as she can.

"Shh sweety, it's alright. It's all going to be alright."

"No it's not." Xander's voice choked out. "I have to go."

Xander releases her and runs up the stairs, into his room and shuts the door. Walking to the window he sits down. Pulling his journal out of his duffel bag he starts to write:

I stare out the window. I see nothing. The sky is dark today. Something might be coming. And somethings gone. He's gone. He left. One moment he was there and the next... He left me here. Alone. Memories haunt me. Images of him burned in my mind. Smiling. Laughing. His eyes so blue, like the sky. Like he has no soul, or an abundance of it. I can't tell. But I drown in them. He captured my soul mesmerizing it with his eyes. His smile, makes me sad to think that I'll never see it again. Ever. When he told me goodbye or when it was over, I thought the world would hear my heart shattering. I can still hear pieces of it dropping away like broken glass everytime I think of him. He's gone. He's really gone. Bring him back. Please just bring him back. He's gone and my soul is empty. I was happy when he was here. And now I'm not. It's amazing, something so small destroyed everything. He's gone and I'm really alone.

Xander shut his journal and got ready for bed. Laying there he thinks of all the memories he and Spike made in the past year, It's not enough, and cries himself to sleep.

a few days later

Everyone was gathered in the lobby of the hotel. It was decided that half of them would be going to Cleveland. The other half with Buffy and Giles to England to rebuild the council.

"What are you going to do Xan?" Willow asked holding his hand, "Come with us."

"I can't Wills." He looked down at her sadly, tucking a lock of red hair behind her ear. "This isn't the life for me anymore. I want normal. No more death."

"Where are you going to go?" She asked, leading him to the couch and sitting down.

"I don't know. I have some money saved up. Anya... she left everything to me, so I have that too." He sighed looking down. "I think I'll go to school, try something new you know?"

"Yeah, I do." She says encouragingly, kissing his cheek. "I'll miss you."

Staford University

It still hurt sometimes, thinking about Spike. His breath would catch and his heart would race. His mind throwing 'what ifs' at him. Sometimes he didn't think he'd survive the sadness it hurt so much. There were bad days, then there were days that weren't so bad. He missed Spike, but he knew Spike would want him to be happy. So he tried to think of that when things got too hard and tried to move forward.

He'd been here over a couple of months now. As it turned out, he actually like school. Because of his gifts he decided to major in psychology. Being a telepath didn't instantly give him the power to understand why people thought what they thought. It took him a while to build shields to block people from invading his thoughts. He also discovered a hidden talent for art, hence his newly acquired art class.

He made his way over to the local coffee shop to finish a paper for his psych class. He ordered himself a coffee and looked around for somewhere to sit. Damn, this place is packed. He saw a table occupied by only one person. He made his way over. Looks like Angel with the brooding. Xander thought walking up to him.

"You know, brooding is not only hazardous to your face, but also to your sex life right?" The guy looked up with piercing blue eyes and gave Xander a little smile. "Sorry. I'm Xander. Mind if I sit with you."

The boy gestured to a seat. "Not at all. I'm Connor, nice to meet you." Connor said extending his hand. "What are you working on?"

"A psych paper for Prof. Adams. You?"

"Just studying for a geophysics exam."

They were silent after that, each lost in their own academic world.

"Done!" Xander exclaimed shutting his notebook.

Connor looked up, brushing the hair out of his eyes. "Yeah. I should quit while I'm ahead."

"Hey you wanna grab a drink or something?" Xander asked.

Connor laughed. "Sorry Xander, I'm only 19 I can't."

"Oh well. Wanna get some dinner or something?"

"Actually, you know food sounds really good right now."

They put their books away and headed out the door.

"Man, I'm stuffed." Xander sighed happily.

"Yeah me too. Thanks for dinner Xander." Connor replied, running his hand over his stomach.

"Anytime Beanstalk."

"So where are you from?" Connor asked while they walked to the dorms.

"Sunnydale." Xander answered looking away.

"You mean the town that got sucked into the ground? That Sunnydale?" Connor asked surprised.

"Yeah." Xander stated sadly.

"I'm sorry man."

"No, it's..."

A growl cut Xander off, turning they both saw two vampires.

"Vampire." Connor sneered and pulled out a stake.

Before Xander could do anything Connor launched himself at the vampires. The vamps never stood a chance. They were dust in under a minute. Xander stared at Connor as he made his way over to him.

"Uh..." Xander said confused. "What are you?"

"Hey!" Connor replied offended. "I'm human! Well mostly human." He finished sheepishly.

"And how is that exactly?" Xander asked skeptically.

"Maybe we should go some place a little less public." Connor said as he led Xander to his dorm.

"No way! No freaking way!" Xander burst out laughing.

"What! What's so funny?" Connor huffed.

"You're Ang *snort* Ange *snort*." Xander laughs harder.

"Spit it out Xan!"

"I can't believe you're Angels son." Xander said calming down. "I mean that's too funny. The broodmeister has a son."

"How do you even know my father anyway?"

Xander explained his history with Angel, Sunnydale and the final battle.

"I'm sorry for your loss." Connor stated softly.

"Thanks, it's alright man. It was getting kind of ... I don't know the word, not being able to talk to people about this stuff. It's not like I can walk up to someone and say 'Hey wanna go patrolling for vampires?' can I?"

Connor laughed. "No, I guess not. And I know what you mean. We should get some sleep. See you sometime tomorrow Xan?" Connor asked.

a couple of weeks later

They were both in the coffee shop studying and making small talk.

"So what did you wanna do tonight Xan?" Connor asked.

"Stay in. Pizza and a movie. I'm beat. All this studying is getting to me." Xander answered still looking down at his book.

Before Connor could reply he heard someone call out his name.

"Hey Con." A tall guy with shaggy hair that fell over his eyes said as he made his way over. "Whatcha doing?"

"Hey Sam." Connor smiled. "Nothing really. Just studying."

"Who's your friend?" Sam asked looking at Xander who was still reading his book.

"Sam this is Xander." Connor said getting Xander's attention. "Xander this is Sam."

Xander looked up at the newcomer, his mouth dropping open, staring in complete shock.

"Hi. It's nice to meet you." Sam said extending his hand.

Xander just kept on staring. Sam looked at him confused and lowered his hand. Oookay. Sam thought.

Xander snapped his mouth shut. "Who are you?" He asked bewildered.

"I thought we established that. I'm Sam." He said extending his arm again.

Xander stared at it for a moment then got over his shock. "Sorry. Xander." He said shaking his hand.

"It's alright. So what are you guys doing after this?" Sam asked.

"I have to meet Jess, we have a date tonight." Connor replied.

"Cool. What about you Xander? Wanna get a drink?"

"I... uh... I..." Xander stuttered. "I'm sorry, my power of speech ran away for a second. Sure, sounds good."

"Cool. Meet you at Joe's, say around 8?" Sam asked.

"Sure, sure." Xander answered.

"Alright, I'll see you guys later." Sam called over his shoulder as he walked away.

"What the hell was that Xan?" Connor asked worriedly.

"Nothing. It was nothing."

Xander entered the bar looking around for Sam. He made his way over to him as soon as he spotted him.

"Hey." Xander greeted him.

"Hey. Want to grab a table?" Sam asked.

"Sure." Xander replied as he followed Sam to a table.

As soon as they were seated the waitress came over and took their order. She left and returned with two beers.

"So how long have you been at Stanford?" Sam asked starting the conversation.

"A couple of months. You?" Xander asked as he took a sip of his beer.

"Same. So what brought you here?"

Xander gave him the very edited version of his story.

"Sorry about your hometown. At least you got out alive."

Yeah but Spike didn't. He thought.

"I wanted a regular normal life too. My dad, he told me if I left, to never come back. I didn't want to stay so I left but... I miss them." Sam said while peeling the label off of his beer.

"I want to show you something." Xander blurted out. "Will you come with me?"

Sam just looked at him for a while, set his beer down and said, "Sure."

They reached Xander's dorm room and he invited Sam in. He led Sam over to a door on the far left wall. He fumbled for his keys, opened the door and stepped back to let Sam through.

Sam stepped into the room and flipped on the light. When his eyes adjusted, there were paintings and drawings everywhere. Wow! Sam thought. He looked closer at the art, noticing that all of the pictures were of him. What is this? He thought turning a puzzled look to Xander.

"This is my sanctuary." Xander stated. "I don't know who you are Sam, but I dream about you almost every night." He took a step closer. "Why?"
