AN – Unheard conversation (“*****”)

Maggie Walsh looked on as the elite troops she had been given were systematically rendered unconscious by a slip of a girl who wasn’t even breathing hard let alone working up a sweat. Even the heavy coat Buffy was wearing to ward off the evening’s chill wasn’t slowing her down that Maggie could detect. Almost before she could blink five of the six-man squad were down and the last one was charging to his inevitable doom as well. Not really wanting Riley damaged, Maggie decided she’d seen enough.

The two combatants freeze and watch as Maggie makes her way towards them.

She faces Buffy and says, “It took the patrol team 42 minutes to track you and you neutralized them in 28 seconds.”

“I was just lucky,” says Buffy not wanting to sound too braggy.

Maggie just replies, “I see. Well . . . still. Very impressive.”

She then turns and heads back to the humvee.

Buffy and Riley begin to talk, but Maggie tunes them out as she begins having deep thoughts. By the time she’s back beside the humvee she’s narrowed her musings down to two options. As she sees Buffy and Riley walk off after the rest of his slowly recovering team, she makes her decision.

Walking a ways away from the humvee and its driver, she pulls out her cell phone and dials.

“Hello Bill. It’s Maggie,” she says. “I think I’ve got something you might be interested enough in to trade for the material I need for my project.”

“An expert in unarmed combat just took out a heavily armed six-man special unit in less than 30 seconds after eluding them for almost three-quarters of an hour.”

“There’s more. Nearly three years experience of fighting, beating, and KILLING beings that are lots stronger than mere humans.”

“No, this is not a mutant I’m talking about, but there is an advanced healing ability that this person has. Not quite instantaneous, but supposedly even severe injuries take not more than a day or two to heal.”

“I thought that would get your attention. I’d like at least enough to coat the power core, spine, skull, left shoulder, left arm and hand, along with a 28 inch spike.”

“No, that’s my price just for delivering her to you. If she works out, then I want the rest of the skeleton covered as well.”

“Yes, it’s a young woman.”

“The reason you’ll do the minimum I described is because you’ll need my help in taking her. She can’t just disappear. There’d be too many questions and possibly an investigation.”

“Good. I should have an extraction plan set up by the time you get here with your team. See you soon Bill.”

With that Maggie ended the call and walks back to the humvee and instructs the driver to take her back to her office. She needs to re-examine the data the research department has been able to dig up on the Slayer.

This meant not bringing Adam on-line quite as early as she wanted but for the opportunity to get the additional protection provided by adamantium it would be worth the wait. This would also give her the chance to review his operating system more thoroughly as well.
