He was frustrated. Hercules had managed to thwart him yet again.

One of these days...

Ares flashed himself back into his chambers, intent on enjoying some much-deserved relaxation. Being the god of war was a difficult job sometimes, especially seeing the absolute lack of conflict currently encircling the globe.

He hefted a small sculpture from a table and hurled it against the wall, enjoying the sparkle as it shattered, raining shards of glass like an evil storm. He rolled his shoulders a bit to get some of the kinks out, halting in surprise when he heard a voice...

"Um, hello?" The intonation was timid, female, and not one he recognized, "Is anyone there?"

What in Hades? Who would dare to invade his private chambers? He swept through the outer areas to his bedchamber and stopped in shock at the sight that greeted him: a young woman, trussed like a sacrifice, lay spread out upon his bed. She stared up at him with wide blue eyes, pale face framed by long chestnut locks of hair that draped messily across the sheets.

"Hi, could you maybe untie me?"

"No," he answered automatically. While not what he had in mind, this had the potential to be quite diverting. Folding his arms across his chest, he leaned nonchalantly against the doorway.

"No?!" Her eyes flared with ire before she visibly restrained herself, "Please? It is so not my fault that I'm here. Blame your crazy cousin - sister - whatever Aphrodite is to you, she dropped me here!"

His eyebrows raised, he and 'Dite had been on bad terms lately. Why would she give him such a gift? He swept his gaze across the odd girl, taking in her scandalous - even by Xena's standards - apparel appreciatively.

Under his silence the girl squirmed again, wriggling her bound hands as she attempted to sit up. Giving up, she fixed him with an earnest expression, "Look, I'm sorry for invading your secret sanctum or whatever, but all I want is to go home."

He regarded her curiously, "Did 'Dite by any chance give a reason for dropping you here?"

"Something about you meddling, and hoping I'd distract you from some 'Xenophobe' chick."

Ares jaw clenched, "Xena?"

"Yeah, probably, I dunno."

"Did she say anything else?"

Dawn shifted impatiently, "Something about me being a lot like this 'Xena' person and then poof: I was here." The girl scowled down at the pink fluff covering her hands. "Stupid ditz," she growled.

This prompted a chuckle from him, and Dawn worked hard to stifle a gasp. So far as she was concerned, she was holding up well but this guy... Words fell short. He was tall, dark, and handsome, and his voice! It made her want to melt into a puddle of Dawn-flavored goo.

Abruptly he was by her side and she flinched at his proximity.

He cocked an eyebrow at her, "I thought you wanted me to untie you?"

She nodded hastily, watching as he took the fluff by her feet and somehow just... broke it. How did one go about breaking fluff? She didn't know, but he did it.

"Thanks, can you get my hands now?"

Ares paused, "Did 'Dite say anything about why she thought you were like Xena?"

Dawn frowned, trying to remember, "Um, I think her exact words were 'smart, strong, independent, powerful, beautiful, would make a good warrior queen.' Why?"

He smirked, "No reason." Sitting down by her side, he pulled her hands towards him, incidentally tugging along the rest of her as well. She gave a small yelp of surprise as he pulled her upright, she was bent in a rather uncomfortable position what with her hands being in his lap.

As if that alone wasn't awkward enough...

Ares frowned at her hands, "This isn't Aphrodite's."

"What?! But it has to be her's, she was the only one I saw!"

He studied the pinkish-red fluff intently, "No, it has someone else's mark on it." His dark eyes met her light ones, "I can't break it."

"You're kidding, right? Please be kidding!"

The god shrugged, "Not kidding, I can't break it."

Dawn bit her lip, not noticing the way his gaze followed the action. "Cut me," she blurted.

"Excuse me?"

"Cut me," she insisted. "As in, get my blood on the stuff. It's worth a try."

He shrugged and withdrew a small knife from his boot, using it to gently slice a small gash on her shoulder. Cupping his hand, he let the red liquid pool in his palm, feeling an odd tingling sensation as he transferred it to her bonds. There was a flash of green light, then the fluff evaporated.

"Score! Free at last, free at last, thank you monks I'm free at last!" She rubbed her wrists and hands to try and get rid of the tickly sensation that permeated them.

Ares brought his hand to his mouth and tasted the remnants of the blood, curious as to what he would find. The taste of power exploded across his palate, and his eyes snapped to his odd 'gift' with renewed interest.

Must remember to thank 'Dite the next time I see her...

El Fin

A/N: So that's the end of this one. I'm thinking of doing something Buffy-related next, but not a 10 Things story. My next 10 Things story will probably be a continuation of my 'Transformations' fic... like: 10 Wishes Xander Never Granted?

Like it, love it, loathe it with the fiery intensity... oh, you know the drill!

The End
