Joining Up (2/?)
Title: Joining Up (2/?)
Author: Ed Scott
Disclaimer: All characters belong to their rightful owners... none of
who are me.
Summary: Sequel to A Favor Repaid. Xander is asked to join the Justice League. Not all are in favor of him joining.
Warning: Crossover: Justice League Unlimited
A/N: While Bruce is recovering from a broken back, Nightwing will fill in his roster spot. Starts after the Thanagarian invasion. I’m nixing most of the Knightfall story arc. Don’t feel like incorporating it.
Wally rushed to Xander’s apartment and knocked on his door. It was 4 in the afternoon and Xander was still at work. Harley opened the door, knowing Xander wouldn’t have bothered knocking since they went grocery shopping two days ago.
“How are you doing?”
“Every day and in every way.” Harley started the old saying.
“I’m getting better and better.” Wally finished it for her. Harley and Wally had a good laugh about an old but universally funny joke. After a few seconds of companionable silence, Wally asked where Xander was.
“He’s at work. Why aren’t you guys getting money from the Bat so you don’t have to work two jobs just to pay the rent? How much time do most of the people that wear costumes and masks, other than Bruce Wayne, have missed work because they’re out there fighting bad guys like me?”
“There are a few of the female heroines who are models. Or could be if they wanted to.” Wally did the Groucho bit with his eye brows. This earned him a slap on the arm.
“Hey! Stop that! Wonder Woman is out to hit me, too. I don’t need to be hit from the girlfriend of a guy who I would like to be friends with. Since he took out Clark with such style.”
“Whatever you said, you probably deserved it. Why are you here, Wally?”
“We’re increasing the number of members of the Justice League. Everyone that we talked to is on board with us. Now we want to ask Xander. Kyle, Clark and Diana don’t want him with us. Nightwing and J’onn want to meet him before making their decision. I’m the only ally he has up there right now. Maybe Elongated Man is on my side since we have the same sense of humor. But other than that.”
“They don’t like him for embarrassing Superman, huh? What sheep they are. Judging a guy they didn’t know existed before his meeting in Metropolis. He should be back after 5. He might be able to get out of work early today since it’s Friday. I’ll call him and find out.”
Harley called Xander’s cell and got his voicemail. He called back a few minutes later. A guy working at the site he was at fell through a hole into an old Indian, sorry Native American, site. Xander was on the crew pulling him up. His company wanted everyone checked out at the hospital then go home and rest until Monday.
He was on his way home by Green Lantern Express anyway. When Harley told Xander Wally was at their apartment, he hurried home faster than he would have. He was going to get some flowers of the non squirting kind for Harley, but there appears not to be any time. If he WAS the Fastest Man Alive, he’d get her flowers. Since Xander couldn’t get his better half a gift, he figured he’d get her something later.
When the West Coast Green Lantern landed on the rooftop of his apartment building, he saw a smiling Harley and Wally waiting for him. Xander gave a sigh of relief that there wasn’t an emergency. Xander removed his Green Lantern uniform to show the dirty work clothes that was needed to go in the laundry. And Xander to a shower.
“We’re expanding the Justice League. We have every hero on board with us. Except you. Your history with Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman has made asking you a hot topic. Clark, Diana and Kyle are against it. I’m with you as well as Bruce. J’onn and Nightwing haven’t decided yet. They want to meet you to form an opinion. So, will you come with me to the Watchtower to have an interview?”
“A few things first. One, you tell Marvin that if he tries to read my mind without permission, I respond… with reckless abandon. And it’ll have to wait until after dinner with Mrs. Summers. I never miss a chance when she’s cooking a meal. She makes enough to feed an army. So, there should be enough for you, Wally. Provided you don’t use your super speed to get there.”
Xander and Harley didn’t have plans to eat there, but he got them invited for dinner anyway. While everyone else wholeheartedly trusted the Justice League, he only trusted them to keep aliens from destroying the world or mad men trying to rule the world. Xander doesn’t trust them not to leave Harley alone while Xander does the meet and greet with the rest of the league. So Harley will be keeping Mrs. Summers company for awhile. Maybe get Buffy and Willow over and have a Girls’ Night In.
