This is set post season 7 for BTVS and post season 1 of SPN, with flashbacks from season one.

There was nothing. It was empty. Just like he felt inside. Empty. Tossed aside. Nobody. An open desert spread out before him. All golds and browns. He would've thought this place to be beautiful once. Now he saw it through jaded eyes. Now it just looked like some dead desolate landscape.

Someone was yelling at him in Swahili as he made his way to the cave entrance. He ignored it. He was done. Done with people always yelling at him. Telling him what to do. Telling him he wasn't good enough. Buffy telling him he wasn't strong enough. Willow, he wasn't smart enough. Giles, just ignoring him like he was some dumb kid.

Well that all changes tonight. He thought, as he watched the sun set behind the cave. Tonight he would change everything.

A foul smell assaulted his senses a few feet into the cave. Okay, so far, so creepy. He thought to himself.

“Ugh.” Xander said disgustedly. “What the hell is that?”

He continued his way into the cave. Searching, wary of anything that lurked in the shadows.

“Nice drawings.” He yelled into the cave when he saw the tribal markings on the wall. “But, I mean, come on, even I could've done better than that. A two year old could've done better than that.” He finished sarcastically, looking around.

“You seek me, Warrior?” A deep gravely voice asked out of the darkness.

Xander nearly jumped out of his skin, he stifled the urge to squeal. Scream. He thought. Men don't squeal.

“Where are you?” Xander yelled, shooting a dirty look into the shadows.

“Why do you seek me?”

That voice sent shivers down his spine as he turned in a slow circle, searching for the direction its voice had come from.

“Are you the demon that gave Spike his soul?” Xander asked cautiously, still slowly turning.

“That I am.” The demon answered and Xander finally spotted its glowing green eyes. He repressed the chill trying to climb its way up his back. “I know why you seek me, human.”

“What?” Xander asked surprised. Things weren't going as planned. “What are you talking about? I never said anything.”

“Usually there are three trials.” The demon stated as if bored, ignoring Xander's question. “But for the Heart, there is only one. If you complete this task, the wish from your heart will be granted.”

Xander stared at the demon shell shocked. This couldn't be good. Things were moving too quickly. He had to do something to stop this or he might end up dead.

“Begin.” The demons voice rang through his ears, as the air around him shimmered and the bleak cavern changed into something else.

No!Xander thought frantically, as the air slowly stopped shimmering, leaving him alone at the bottom of King Mans Bluff. Not again.

He sprinted up the slope, trying desperately to reach Willow before she could end the world.

“Willow!” He yelled when he spotted her. Running to her, he stopped, breathing hard. “You have to stop. Tara wouldn't want this.”

“Xander! Willow!”

He turned to see Buffy and Dawn, covered in dirt, approaching them. He didn't have time to think that this never happened the last time.

“Willow, stop.” Buffy demanded, when she was a few feet away.

Willow turned her cold black eyes to Buffy. Smirking, she raised her hand.

“No, Willow.” Xander yelled, grabbing on to her outstretched hand, as energy started to swirl around it.

Uh-oh. Xander thought, as Willow turned that dark gaze on him.

With a flick of her wrist, he was suspended against the half raised statue jutting up from the ground.

“Watch.” Willow laughed wickedly, her black hair blowing around her face. “While I kill your friends.”

Xander watched in horror as she turned to Dawn, her onyx eyes glowing. He shut his eyes when Dawn started to scream, not wanting to see what Willow was doing to her.

“No!” He heard Buffy's anguished scream, when Dawn's was abruptly cut off.

When he opened his eyes, he was greeted with the sight of Buffy on her knees, tears running down her face. In front of her was a glowing green ball of energy.

The Key. Xander thought sadly. She destroyed her.

Buffy wailed louder and launched herself at Willow. The fight was on.

What the hell? Xander thought as he dropped to the ground. Looking up he saw Willow had Buffy by the throat, holding her off the ground.

“Goodbye, Slayer.” Willow sneered, and Xander heard a sickening crack of Buffy's neck.

“No.” He whispered to himself, as Willow threw Buffy's lifeless corpse to the ground.

Something glinted off to the left, catching his eye. He turned and saw a glittering silver knife. He knew what he had to do. With Willow still staring down at Buffy, he went over and picked up the knife.

“Xander.” He turned, hiding the knife behind his back, when he heard Willow say his name.

“Willow.” He said softly, almost desperately, as he approached her. “Please, you have to stop. They're dead. Tara's dead. You and I, we're all we have left.”

“Is this the part where you tell me you love me?” Willow asked sarcastically. “Cause I gotta tell ya, it's not going to work.”

“Actually, yes.” Xander answered softly, as he came to stand in front of her. “I love you, Willow.”

He raised the knife and plunged it into her heart. Ripping it out, he caught her body before it could hit the ground. Oh god, I'm sorry. He thought, as he stared into Willow's dead green eyes.

“NOOO!” He screamed. He continued to scream until his voice was hoarse. Closing his eyes, he let a single tear fall. Please, stop this.

“Your wish will be granted.”

“What?” Xander's head snapped up at the sound of the gravely voice. He was back in the cave. Willow, Buffy and Dawn were gone. It wasn't real. None of it was.

“You have passed the required test. The good of the many, outweighs the good of the one. You are truly the heart.”

“Yeah? Tell that to someone else.” Xander replied harshly. “I just killed my best friend.”

“It was only an illusion, Warrior.” The demon stated. “Now I will grant your hearts desire.”

“And what's that?” Xander asked snidely.

“To be strong like the Slayer. Smart and powerful like the Witch. A leader, like the Watcher. And to be special like the Key. To have a family.”

Before Xander could reply, the room started to spin. Getting dizzy, he closed his eyes. A few seconds later he heard the word: Done.

“LEX! Come on, get up.” Dean yelled, as he barged into the room, Sam trailing behind him. “Dad's going to be pissed if we're late for school again.”

“I'm coming.” He replied, sitting up. That was a weird dream. “And it's Xander, Dean.”
