Batman looked down as the GCPD took in the gang members. Everything seemed to be going smoothly.

As he stepped back, he felt a presence. "What do you want, D'Hoffryn?" he asked.

"I suppose," the demon lord rumbled, "That there's no point in asking how you do that?"

"Arash'Maharr has a distinctive odor," Batman said. "Again. What do you want?"

"What do you think?" the demon asked.

"The answer is still no," Batman said. "It was no when you approached me in the alley, it was no after Jason died. It was no after Bane broke my back. What makes you think things are going to be any different now?"

"Truthfully? Hope. You have a ferocious talent for vengeance that you keep just barely checked. I could help you unleash it. The criminals of Gotham --"

"Would have nothing to fear from me," Batman said. "I would be too busy granting wishes."

"You could specialize in helping victims of crime," D'Hoffryn said.

"I already do," Batman said.

"I suppose," D'Hoffryn said, "That I walked right into that one."

"You did. Now, if you'll excuse me --"

"I will ask again."

"And you'll get the same answer."
