Angela Montenegro looked at the reconstruction of the child before her, the list of possible scenarios for her death, and remembered the corpse with those terrifying words scratched deep into the bones – ‘the slayer couldn’t save her’.
As tears ran down her cheeks, she looked over at the man who had seemingly appeared in the room.
“I just don’t know what it means. Why do these things happen, and why can’t we figure this out, and why can’t we just detach? This, girl, this child died needlessly,” her voice cracked as she tried to stop crying.
He was almost completely shrouded in darkness, but his shock of white-blonde hair was still visible. Shoving his hands roughly into his pockets, he made to walk over to her.
“What did it mean? If we didn’t care – I wish I couldn’t care.”
Spike reached out to touch her arm in comfort, “But that’s just it luv. You care. S’what makes you different from the killers, from those things that go bump in the night. You know me, my story, how I am what I am, and you know that what you got, what I have; it’s worth having. Your soul. S’what makes you different pet. Makes you care for a girl you can’t save, makes you fight battles you know you can’t win. Makes you whole, and gives you the chance to be something other then them. An’ in the end, it’s why they can’t beat us.”
