“Don’t even start Spike.”

“They still going on?” Lindsey came in with the book.

Fred nodded. “I think it’s a record.” She started the incantation.

This particular argument was over who was going to the dimension with both not wanting their mate to get hurt.

“Look,” Lindsey finally interrupted. “No offense, Spike but they got you once, they could try it again then we are in the crap. Same goes for Faith.”

“He has a point,” Faith nodded at Spike. “ She gets a hold of one of us, then there is no chance of stopping her.”

“I don’t want you to get hurt luv.” He pulled Buffy on to his lap and she put her arms around his neck.

“I know.” She gave him a kiss.

“How about I go with you then?” Lindsey offered.

“You!” Lilah snorted.

“Guys.” Fred raised her voice, repeating it when she was ignored.

“What?” Buffy followed where she was looking and stopped in her tracks. Angel, Jasmine and the others were entering the building.

“How did they find us?”

“Fred now would be a good time.” Lindsey urged her but she was already ahead of him, repeating the spell in Latin.

“Come on Freddy, they are getting closer.” Buffy gripped the box as Lindsey moved to her side.

The brunette held a hand up as she continued, stopping as the door opened.

“Ladies,” Jasmine walked In. “I think we need to talk.” She trailed off when she saw the portal.

“What’s wrong? the cat got your tongue.” Faith and Spike blocked the way as Buffy threw herself into the portal followed soon after by Lindsey.

“You helped her?” Jasmine looked over at them . “No matter though, I forgive you, it is her fault. I understand, she used your love for her to fool you both.”

“You seem very calm for someone who is about to lose everything.” Fred walked over beside them

“Why cause this?” Giles asked. “Buffy would never have done this if you hadn’t influenced her.”

“Sorry Mr Giles but that blame goes to you,” she defended herself. “You believed them over your own slayer.”

¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬

“Owwies.” Buffy cursed as she fell backside first out of the portal. Seconds later, Lindsey landed beside her.

He picked himself up and looked around. “Where to now?” he held a hand out to help her up then picked the box up as she dusted herself off.

This was definitely not Kansas. The place was filled with what looked like huge mountains and you didn’t have to be a genius to see it was non human friendly.

“I’m thinking that hill…that’s if it is there and we’re not just really high now on all the fumes.” Buffy nodded in the direction of it.

“Don’t know about you but I think we owe the powers a fruit basket for these.” He touched the amulet that was around his neck.

“Just don’t let anything happen to it.” She warned him as she set off.

The journey was filled with small talk as they had a long way to go. Unsurprisingly it turned to Angel.

“So if he loses his soul, how come he was doing the deed with the seer?”

“I don’t think they did. According to Fred, she ascended just before they admitted it then she came back as Darth Cordy and decided to help Connor with his Oedipus issues.”

“Kinda weird’s me out that,” he admitted. “A few months before she was changing his diapers then she was helping him out of them.”

“Make‘s doing my ex boyfriend‘s grand childe seem normal.” She nodded.

“What about Fred…is she dating?” he changed the subject.

“I think she was dating Gunn, not sure if she still is…but.” She stopped where she was standing, knowing this had been coming for a while.

“But what?”

“I may have only know her a while but she’s become special to me. Hurt her and you’ll get to meet the slayer.”

“Already met you darling.”

“You’ve met Buffy,” she made sure he could see exactly what she was saying. “Believe me when I say, you better pray that you never, ever meet her.” Without another word, she continued, leaving him lagging behind with something to think about.

They continued in silence for the next few minutes with Buffy in front.

For some reason she stopped in her tracks and as he wasn’t paying attention, he walked straight in to her. “What…”

He turned to where she was pointing and saw they were surrounded by at least twenty demons who looked like giant spiders but with human heads.

“State your intent?” the one obviously in charge bellowed.

“We come in peace,” she held up her hand mentally kicking herself for saying something so corny. She pointed to the box . “We need help with this.”

“You know of her?” he laid down his sword. “You have the box of Verah.”

“Um…yeah we’ve been sent to find her name.”

He nodded. “I am Micah. the enemy of she is an ally of ours.”

“So now we‘re all friends, can you tell us what to do?” she asked. “We don’t have much information.”

“Only one can speak the name,” he pointed at the hill. “The beast lives in a cave, kill him and with his dying breath he will utter the name. We shall take you there.” He held out a pincer.

Not wanting to cause any trouble, Buffy too it and they were on their way, with a few of the demons around Lindsey and the rest bringing up the rear.

“How do you know of her?” Micah asked as they made their way towards the hill.

“She came to our world …” Lindsey was about to speak but a sword was placed at his throat.

“Only the warrior is permitted to speak,” Micah warned him. “These are the rules that have governed this land for centuries.”

“Well…like he said,” Buffy waited until the sword was removed and they continued. “A friend brought her into our dimension by accident. She’s already got half of our world and is near to getting the rest of it.”

“It is the way of her. Your…friend. How is she?”

“In a coma. She has been since she had Jasmine.” Buffy bit her lip, thinking of her friend. It had always been in the back of her mind that Cordelia might not come out of this.

“That’s what they called her…the people who met her first.” She replied.

“And yet you know the truth…the both of you?” he looked back at Lindsey.

“The people who look after our world, needed some people to stop her. They chose us.”

“Then you must hurry warriors,” he laid his pincer on her hand. “She will destroy it then move on.”

Buffy exchanged looks with Lindsey as they followed him.

“So who is the beast?”

“When she first appeared, he was her companion but in time she betrayed him and abandoned him.”

“For what reason?”

“I do not know, no one does, yet he is still loyal. He knows what will occur which is why he has made it impossible.”

“There‘s no such word as impossible.” She looked him in the eye.

“You are worthy child,” he took her hand. “ This is where we must leave you, take care warriors.” He pointed at the cave then disappeared, followed by the rest of the demons.

¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬

“You okay?” Lindsey took a look at her and she looked like hell.

They were in the middle of the cave and Buffy looked as if she was about to drop at any second. Whatever the beast was, he was powerful. She had felt it the minute she stepped inside. It seemed to be pulling at her essence and trying to take what she had. She was fighting it but only just. There wasn’t any option. If she wanted to get back to Spike and the others, she had to keep going.

She nodded “He’s strong, I could feel him the minute we got in here.” She put up a finger indicating he was around the corner.

He was sat in the far corner, scraping the wall with some sort of dagger. Stopping and turning when he heard the intruders. Standing up, he was at least eight foot. Worse than that his mouth was stitched up.

“And they said it would be hard!” Lindsey turned to her.

“Stand over there,” she handed Lindsey the box. “And be ready.” She made a run for the beast only to be swatted straight into the wall, splitting her head as she fell.

“Why is it always me who gets the free flight?” she groaned as she felt the blood drip from her wound.. She felt something digging into her hand and as she looked to see what it was, a plan came to her. As she stood, she motioned for Lindsey to distract him so she could put her plan into action.

“Hey…ugly ass,” he yelled at it. “She’s in our world now, she told me to say get bent.”

With a roar, he scrapped his way over to the ex lawyer.

“Get ready.” Buffy mouthed as she took another run at him from behind, jumping as he bent and landing on his shoulders. He struggled and it took literally everything she had to hold on.

As he flayed, she brought a stone from her pocket and jammed it straight into his eye. He flung her off as he stumbled into the wall and fell.

Taking his chance, Lindsey grabbed the dagger she had gave him and used it to rip his mouth open.

He turned to Buffy but she was already there with the box open and ready. When it came out, it was nothing more than a gargle.

He dropped and melted into nothing flinging Buffy to the floor as he did. She groaned as she stood back up dusting herself off.

“Well that was…disappointing.” Lindsey offered his hand. “You okay?”

“Five by five,” she handed him the box. “Now, let’s get this home and find out what or who this bitch really is.”

¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬

“I should have staked you long ago!” Angel growled at the younger vampire.

“She wouldn’t let you.” He smirked. Outside he was fine but his insides felt like they were burning away. Although Fred had warned him it was going to happen, there is no way he could prepare for this feeling. If it wasn’t for Buffy he would have ended himself there and then.

He knew he had made the right decision but looking over at Jasmine he wanted nothing more than to hold her and feel good again.

“It’s not too late,” she seemed to sense what he was thinking about. “Apologize and I will have you back, we all will.”

He stood up and started to walk over.

“Spike don’t, they are playing you.” Fred tried to stop him but he shrugged her off, almost reaching Jasmine but Faith grabbed him and threw him against the wall.

“Remember what B said Spike,” she knelt beside him. “Listen to our girl.”

She didn’t know what had happened but as soon as she saw Jasmine again, she saw her for what she really was. Not knowing why and not caring, she was just glad that she was back to normal.

Just as she stood back up, the portal exploded and Lindsey fell out followed by the slayer.

Not wasting any time, he ripped the box open, letting the words out, seconds before a halo of light enveloped her.

They had no idea if it was working as Jasmine still looked the same to her, all rotting skin and maggots.

“Why?” she whispered to Buffy.

“Because no matter how easy, it’s wrong.”

“Oh my god,” Willow squealed. “Your face what happened.”

“You don’t know what you have done child.”

“Maybe not,” Buffy agreed. “But I’m the one who has to live with it.”

Lindsey who had edged behind her in all the fuss, brought the dagger out and slit it across Jasmine’s throat, there was a flash then she disappeared the same as the beast had done earlier.

“Buffy..” Angel tried to take her hand but she shrugged him off.

“Stay out of my way, she stopped when she saw the look of shame on the others face. “I know it’s not your fault but I just need some time.”

With one last glance at Giles, she walked out quickly followed by Fred.

¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬
“You ready sweetie?” Buffy’s head appeared round the door.

Fred had decided to spend a few weeks with Buffy for a change of scenery. Ever since the incident as everyone called it, Angel had been different and she knew he blamed her for it all.

And since Fred was coming, Lindsey had decided a new start was what he needed too. She didn’t complain, she always needed extra hands when patrolling.

Willow hadn’t been happy about it and Faith informed her the reason was the Wiccan had a crush on the girl. It seemed though that the only one the Texan was interested in was Lindsey.

Fred nodded. “Lindsey’s just getting his bags, then we can go.”

“Cool, Spike is outside, give him your stuff while I speak to Angel.” She smiled.

As expected, she found him in his room, looking out the window. “I see she‘s coming with you.”

“Don’t know why but she’s got this feeling that she isn’t wanted around here just now,” she walked over to the vampire. “How are you?”

“Surviving.” He sighed.

She nodded .“That’s all we ever do,” she made her way to the door. “I am sorry Angel, whether you believe it or not but like you said we fight for everyone not just us. We all lose people but we carry on.”

“Maybe this time it’s too much,” he looked over to her. “First Cordelia and now Connor.”

After everything had gone back to normal, Connor went back to hating Angel again and blaming him for Jasmine disappearing. He had left the hotel in the middle of the night a few days ago and no one had heard from him since.

“He had to go Angel, he has to make his own choices, even if he screws up along the way. He’ll come back eventually, he is your kid after all.”

“Maybe he might get the happiness I never did.”

“Maybe if you take that martyr size chip of your shoulder, you’ll be surprised what you‘ll find,” she shot back, sick of the self pity. “The day you realize the world isn’t all about trying to piss you off ,is gonna be the day you wake up and start living!”

“She’ll turn on you like she did with us.” He all but whispered as she got to the door.”

“She ran for a reason,” she stopped but didn’t look back. “You forced her to run. Maybe that’s why we get on so well, we have so much in common.” She walked out the door and made her way towards the car.

Like Fred, she knew he blamed her for it all but she just didn’t have the energy to care about it. She had done what she had to…what he would have if he was in her shoes.

Spike was waiting for her in the doorway, guessing that what had been said. He put his arm around her. “You know not to listen to him sweets.”

“He needs to get that chip off his shoulder and get rid of the Martyr complex.” Lindsey repeated exactly what she said.

“Couldn’t agree more mate.” Spike patted him on the back as he got into the car.

Fred and Buffy exchanged glances. This was gonna be a one long ride home.
