SUMMARY: Buffy still hasn’t found her out clause. Could a bleach blonde vampire be the reason why?
“How is that possible? Willow was the first to reply. “She would have told us.”
“Yeah, because I’m sure you would have laid out the welcome carpet,” Dawn glared then with a sigh added. “They were going to, after Glory. But then she ….”
“Hmm.” Buffy looked up from the book, trying to act innocent, but she knew she had been caught.
“You keep staring at me Slayer, what’s wrong?” he raised an eyebrow.
She smiled. This was it, she was going to tell him how she felt. She loved him. Buffy Summers the slayer, loved William the Bloody the vampire.
She had for a while and she knew it now, but it wasn’t until the Glory trouble started that she started to figure it out.
As soon as she found out she was fighting a God, she knew it was serious and it was time to seize the day.
He wasn’t Angel, he never would be but that was a good thing. He wouldn’t go evil if they had smooches. Plus he knew her probably better than Angel ever had. She was still trying to figure out exactly how it was possible, but it was true.
“We need to talk,” she put the book on the arm rest and moved over beside him on the couch.. “I’ve been thinking about us.”
“What are you saying Slayer?” he glared at her. “Got to be honest with you, I‘m really not up for another round of kick the Spike!”
“If you don’t shut up and listen, I bloody will,” she blurted out before realizing what she said. “What I mean…everyone says that you loving me is wrong…”
He shook his head, sick of the games and stood ready to walk away but she grabbed his arm.
“Please, Spi…William, I need to say this now.”
With a sigh he sat back down. “ The floor is yours Slayer!”
“It’s not wrong,” she continued. “ And if they think so then who cares?”
“What are you saying?” he didn’t want to get his hopes up.
“Tell me again?”
“Tell you what?” he played dumb.
“I love you Buffy.”
She took his hand . “I love you too!” she leaned over and kissed him, grinning at the expression on his face.
After a beat, he came to his senses and stood before picking her up. “Right then, love, give me a test ride then and see how I fit.” He carried her up the stairs, both of them laughing properly for the first time in a long while.
“I found out a few days after, don’t ask me how.” Dawn shuddered.
“I just wanted to be happy…” Buffy looked at Melinda. “I was happy.”
“I know this isn’t my place but when ever Buffy talks about Spike, her face lights up,” Melinda spoke up. “All the worries melt away and she turns back into the girl she should be.”
“What happened?” Xander nodded at the kitchen. He had a feeling he wasn’t going to like this but if it made her happy, even in death, he wouldn’t ruin it for her.
“Is it really her?” Spike refused to look at her, he didn’t want to get his hopes up.
“It is,” she replied. “She says sorry.”
“For what?” his head shot up.
“For taking too long to realize what you knew from the beginning.”
“Don’t be stupid Slayer. I knew it would happen one day. At least we had a few months rather than nothing.” He nodded, trying to control his emotions. It didn’t work, the cup sitting next to him was picked up and thrown against the wall. With one last look in Buffy’s direction, he threw the door open, before storming out, ignoring everyone.
By the time Melinda finished, even Xander couldn’t deny the couple anymore.
Like it or not Buffy really did love the vampire and vice versa.
“I‘m suddenly thinking we better check on him,” Xander headed for the door. “He can’t be alone just now.”
“Good idea.” Giles grabbed his coat and followed him, shutting it behind him.
After they left, Willow started to clean up. “Do you have a place to stay Ms Gordon?”
“Actually no, I came straight here. I didn‘t even think about getting a hotel.”
“If you don’t mind staying here, there’s room. I mean it’s the least we can do after everything.”
“You better,” Buffy nodded in agreement. “It’s not the best place to walk around after dark, especially if you’re a stranger.”
“Thank you, could I use the phone. I better tell my husband that I won’t be home?”
“Sure, it’s just in the kitchen.” Willow showed her then went upstairs to get a pillow and some sheets for their guest.
Buffy waited until everyone was busy and started looking around the house. Okay, so the plan hadn’t worked, she was still here so it had to be something else. “Come on Buf think.” She paced.
“That is the first sign of madness love, you do know that right?”
“Huh?” she turned and saw Spike grinning at her. “What…How?”
“What’s a bloke got to do to get his girl to kiss him?” he mock pouted.
“Will!” she squealed jumping into his arms.
They turned as the door opened and Xander walked into the hall followed by Giles who was holding a box.
“We were too late.” Xander gave Willow an envelope with her name on it.
Buffy turned to Spike realizing what had happened as Willow read it aloud.
I can’t be without her. Not in a world where she isn’t. You would do the same for your witch, so you understand why I have to do this. She was…is my world and I don’t exist without her.
Look after niblit for me, she will understand, she knows more than you all think, maybe even more than you do.
“He’s…” She looked up.
He nodded, putting his arms around Dawn. “We got the ashes, maybe we can sprinkle them over Buffy’s grave?”
“She’d like that.” Melinda confirmed.
“What do you think Dawnster?” he turned to the girl.
“I think they‘re happy.” She replied.
“How do you know?”
“Look!” Dawn turned him around.
Spike and Buffy were in front of them, holding each other. Even Xander had to admit they looked happy, Buffy more than she ever had.
“I guess this was my reason then?” she looked at Melinda then the white light appeared behind them.
“Yeah.” She nodded.
“Look after each other.” She smiled at her sister as they disappeared into the light together.
“We will Buffy, I promise.” She smiled through the tears.
