SUMMARY: A recently deceased Slayer goes to Melinda for help

“Let me see it again.”

Melinda smiled as she held out her hand showing Andrea the diamond ring that Jim had bought her for her birthday.

“You are one lucky girl,” her friend grinned. “You ever want to get rid of him then send him my way.”

"Ah sorry but I’m keeping him…” Melinda trailed off. She was sure she had seen a girl walking around the shop but there was no one there when she looked.

“Something up?” Andrea walked over to her friend.

The brunette shrugged. “Probably just me. Anyway you are still coming tonight?”

“A night out with my two favorite people and I don’t have to pay? Of course I’ll be there.” Andrea put her arm around her.

“Can I help you?” Melinda turned to the girl at the counter.

“I figure it’s you or the Ghostbusters but to be honest with you, I’m a little freaked out by Slimer.” she looked around the shop.

The other woman just stared at her so she shut up.

“Sorry that’s what I do,you get nervous and so you mumble…and obviously you don’t care,” she turned red and shook her head mumbling, “Are you Melinda Gordon?”

Before she could answer, the girl disappeared.

“Another one?” Andrea had noticed the empty space that Melinda was talking to. She was answered with a nod.

“So I’ll book the flight tomorrow then?” Jim had been talking to his wife for the last five minutes but she hadn’t heard him.

For some reason the girl from earlier was still getting to her. There was something different about her, stranger than usual. And she wasn’t sure she wanted to find out what it was.

A pair of hands came around her waist. “Earth to Mel, are you in there?”

“Sorry baby,” she gave him a kiss, “just a little preoccupied at the minute.”

“Another spook in the night,” he kissed her back. “Well I am going to hit the hay, you coming?”

“In a little while sweetie, I have some paper work to finish first.”

She watched him walk up the stairs and sat at the table intent on doing as she said but a yawn later and her eyes drifted shut.

“You alive?”

The voice jerked her awake. Turning she saw the girl from earlier standing in her kitchen.

“If you’re going to keep popping in then maybe I should know your name?” Melinda stood and made her way over.

“I guess that would help.”

Melinda took the chance to have a proper look at the girl. She was young, didn’t look twenty and really thin. Apart from that, she looked healthy enough, so her death must have been an accident.

“My name is Buffy Summers,” she said. “I know I’m dead but I don’t know why I haven’t left here and gone to heaven.”

“I’ve figured out that there is a reason and I’m guessing it’s something to do with my family but I tried and even they can’t see me.”

“And you can’t think why?” Melinda poured a coffee.

“I’ve seen enough in my life to know something is up. Something or someone is keeping me here and I need to know why.”

“Why come to me?”

“You have a cousin who stays in LA called... well she was Lily and Chanterelle when I knew her and then it was Anne but anyway she told me about you.” she left out the details of how they knew each other, the woman didn’t need to know why.

“So I figured if no one else could see me, well you would.” Buffy finally shut up.

“How did you die?”

“I fell off a pylon and then…Buffy Jam,” she mimicked it. “Not the best way to go but…” she shrugged.

“I still don’t know how I can help you?” Melinda sat down.

A few hours later Melinda was tossing and turning. She was having a weird dream. She kept seeing these monsters and Buffy kept popping up.

Then it changed to the top of the pylon. Buffy was talking to a young girl then she turned and willingly jumped straight off it into a white fog, then she dropped.

She woke up sweating with a scream.

“Mel, sweetheart, it‘s okay.” Jim put an arm around her.

“Something is wrong.” she got up and made her way to the living room.

“Buffy if you can hear me I want to talk to you.” she spoke to the air.

“What’s up?” she formed in front of her.

“How long does it take to get to Sunnydale from here?”

“I’m guessing a few hours.”

“Well looks like we are Sunnydale bound then.”

Next morning they were on the way to the Hellmouth.

“I had a weird dream last night,” Melinda broke the silence. “About you dying, can you remember anything else?”

“Do you mind if we don’t,” Buffy looked out the window. “It’s still hard to talk about.”

Melinda knew she was lying but dropped it knowing eventually she would find out.

“So who are we going to see?”

“Giles… he was like a father to me and Dawn,” She smiled for the first time “I miss her.”

“Well not too long now.” the other woman nodded at the Welcome to Sunnydale sign.

Five minutes later, they were outside Buffy’s house and Melinda took a breath before knocking.

A man answered. “Can I help you?” He spoke in an English accent.

“This is Giles,” Buffy smiled.

“My name is Melinda Gordon; I am here to talk to you about Buffy Summers. She has a message for you.”
