This is your last chance to turn to Chapter One if you want a disclaimer for some perverse purpose of your own.
A few days later, Dallas found herself knocking on the door on the topmost floor of the apartment building. To her surprise the door was opened not by the old lady but by the vampire.
“’Ullo. Come in if you like. But keep it down. Buff’s sleeping.”
She followed the… man? The monster? The husband anyway. She followed him into the chintzy, little-old-lady living room. He lolled in a chair and stared at her.
”It’s all…. I came to say it’s all cleared up.”
”I mean that you needn’t worry about further attention from the NYPSD. Your Watcher friends have made us wipe all the records and swear to keep out of the affairs of you and yours… It was you wasn’t it?”
”What was me?”
”You who killed the boy in the alley behind the building.”
The vampire gave her a flat stare for about three seconds and then said: “He was a Bringer, not a boy. He hadn’t been a boy since the First took his soul and hollowed him out. And you can’t kill what’s already dead. Trust me on this one. I should know.”
He was silent for a moment and then said: "And it was me that disposed of the Bringer that was watching you and your hubby." He paused again and added: "You're welcome."
“What will you do now?”
”How do you mean?”
”What will you and…. Buffy do?”
”Well, we’ll keep fighting and making up. I’ve got to apologise to her for every day of the time I wasn’t with her. Have as much fun and sex as we can before…”
”Before she dies.”
”And what will happen then?”
wants me to go on. To keep on… To keep an eye on the kids and their kids…. She’s got a point. The name of Summers will attract attention for centuries…”
”But what do you plan to do?”
He was silent for a moment and then said: “I’ll try. But I don’t know that I’ll want to go on. To live when she’s gone from the world. Maybe I’ll take a walk in the sunlight: see if I can find my way to the heaven she says she’s going back to… Like I say, we’ll see. None of your concern any more though is it, Lieutenant?”
And at that she shook her head, got to her feet and went gratefully home to her loving, living husband.
