Ch. 12 Don't Make The Waitress Cry, Or She May Just Spit In Your Pie!

"Tell me about the job." Sam said to Dean after the eldest brother had talked Xander into going up to the counter

to flirt with the teenage waitress while they waited for the food.

Dean waved off Sam's question as he watched in amusement as the youngest Winchester walked up to the very pretty

blond. If the girl, Lisa wasn't clearly jail bait, he would have went for her himself.

It looked as if he had his work cut out for him too. Because as Xander walked up to her, with his hopeful smile,

she looked at him warily. It was pretty obvious that she's no stranger to customers hitting on her.

Dean winced when Xander nearly spilled the drinks off another passing waitress's tray onto Lisa.

"Dean-"

"Sh!" Dean interrupted Sam, sparing only a split second to glare at Sam before returning his gaze to Xander, who

was in full babble mode.

Dean winced again. He couldn't understand half the things the kid said when he did that. And with him being across

the room from Xander, he couldn't hear anything now. But with the arms flailing, and his mouth going a mile a

minute, he HAD to be babbling like an idiot!

'Come on Xander, cool it before she thinks you ride on the short bus!' Dean thought, then remembered the shirt

Xander wore the first time he had seen the kid. As well as all the shirts that had been in the duffel Dean had

'accidentally' left behind a month ago. 'At least he doesn't have those eye blinding clown shirts anymore. Then she

DEFINATLY would think it!'

Then Dean shook his head in amazement as whatever Xander said had Lisa laughing and smiling. Not the fake smile

that she had on when another customer had been talking to her before Xander walked up to her. But the kind of smile

that reached her baby blue eyes. And when she laughed, she sort of leaned in and touched Xander's arm.

The kid's style may be COMPLETLY different than his, but it did seem to get it done. The kid was in!

Dean took his blue-green eyes, which were sparkling with amused pride away from Xander to finally address Sam, who

sat with his arms crossed, looking ticked at being ignored.

Dean gave Sam a superior big brother sigh.

"Well?" Sam asked, looking as if he wanted to reach over the booth's table and shake it out of him.

"There's been a lot of fatal car accident on this road in Harrison the last three months. It's a block from a local

bar."

"Sounds like cases of Drunk drivers to me." Sam shrugged. "It's sad, but it happens. What makes it our kind of

job?"

"The guy said coroners check car accident victims' blood alcohol whenever DUI's are suspected. But only half were

over the limit."

"So. Maybe the other half were affected by the alcohol before they reached the limit Different people react

differently to alcohol." Sam said, then opened his mouth to go into textbook detail.

"Dude! I know this!" Dean interrupted, rolling his eyes. Then smirked. "Though not as much as you since a shot and

a half of tequila and your wasted."

Before Sam could get bitchy, Dean continued.

"I thought about that anyway. So I asked how close they were to the limit. He didn't know, so he called his cousin.

It turns out there were at least two that didn't have ANY alcohol in their systems. Two weeks ago a bartender who

worked at the bar, and last week a cop who had came to the bar to break up a fight.
The kid in the back of the patrol car survived, but had to be put in the psych ward."

"And you think he saw something." Sam nodded as if Dean had asked him, instead of him saying it to Dean.

Sam was also wearing his sympathy face, probably thinking of the poor bastard in the funny farm part of the hospital

to recover not only from whatever injuries of the accident, but from whatever he had seen.

That was good. Because worrying about other people's shit may keep the middle Winchester from brooding over things

that can't be changed.

It made Dean feel helpless that he couldn't do anything to help Sam through this. That he can't protect Sam from

going through the whole thing.
And the thing Dean hated most of all (even more than those evil sons-of-bitches out there) was the times he

couldn't protect his family. Or Keep it together.

Dean looked over at Xander, who was still flirting with Lisa in a goofball way. He was now making her laugh so

hard, her boss was looking as if he were going to reprimand her for slacking off even though the diner was nearly

deserted.

"We gotta have a talk about the Xander issue." Dean sighed, looking as if he would rather talk about becoming a

woman.

"You want to send him back?" Sam asked, looking resigned and unhappy.

"Of COURSE NOT!" Dean said immediately, a tad bit too loud. Ignoring the stares from the other four tables of

customers, and waving Xander's curious look from across the room, he continued in a lower, but still incredulous

voice. "That's not what I'm saying at ALL! I just mean that we need to step back on Xander's involvement in this!"

"What? Are we supposed to go back to leaving him in the motel all alone while we do our business?" Sam asked in a

disbelieving tone.

"Yeah. So?" Dean asked, as if he couldn't see what the problem with that plan was.

At Sam's 'Are you serious?!' look, Dean made a frustrated noise. His life would be a WHOLE LOT easier if his

younger brothers would just get over it and realize that oldest brother knows best!

"You weren't there Sam. You didn't walk into the room and see Xander all stone cold dead on the cement floor!" Dean

said, his deep voice full of emotion. "I don't want him in this if we can keep him out!"

At Sam's intense guilt filled, kicked puppy dog look, Dean sighed.

"I'm not saying I blame you for not being there, so stop looking at me like that! If I couldn't stop it, YOU

couldn't have stopped it either! What I'm SAYING is that the kid needs more training before he gets back into the

family business." Dean shifted uncomfortably, then said quietly. "Or goes home."

Dean didn't even want to THINK of the time that would happen. He refused to. Especially since the whole moving to

Sunnydale during the school year hasn't even been put on the table to Sam yet. He'd have to talk to Dad about it

first. If they could FIND him!

But if it comes to them having to leave Xander by himself for nine months (because Dean sure as HELL would make

sure summers he was with them), Dean definitely wanted Xander to be as well trained as possible!

Tony Harris. Just the THOUGHT of that man and the uncountable times he put his hands on his youngest brother,

threatened to send Dean into a rage.

"Have you even heard of a hellmouth?" Sam asked, voicing Dean's other concern.

"No. But then how many OTHER things do we come in contact with that we never heard of?" Dean said with a pointed

look, since there's been a few. Especially when they were growing up. Then Dean made a face. "But then again,

teenagers are always exaggerating. Saying that their life and school are hell ridden. And Xander is....well Xander."

As if on cue, Xander came back to the table, Lisa at his side.

The two older brothers looked to each other in a silent 'We'll talk later' as Xander grinned at each of them.

"I'm back" He said redundantly as he sat down next to Dean on his side of the booth and helped Lisa pass the food

around.

"I guess cold food is better than NO food" Dean glared at Xander, since the food had been ready for at least five

minutes before they had came back with it. His glare made him seem more annoyed than he was, just to make Xander

squirm.

Xander didn't disappoint, but unfortunately, Xander wasn't the only one affected by the glare.

"I-I'm really s-sorry s-sir!" Lisa stammered, looking near tears and wringing her hands while silently praying that

he wouldn't complain to her boss. "D-do you want me to have it warmed up. Or d-do you want me to get you an-

another?"

She hoped he wanted to warm it up, because if he brought it back wanting something else because of it, it would come

out of her paycheck.

"Don't worry Lisa. He's all bark and no bite. Right?" Xander asked, looking hopefully at Dean. "Well, at least for

pretty girls like you of course. I am of course DEAD!" he said, giving a nervous laugh.

Dean rolled his eyes and took a huge bite of his burger.

"At least it's still warm." He said, his mouth still full, so it was almost impossible to understand.

"That's Dean talk for 'I'm sorry. I won't get you into trouble with you boss'." Xander assured Lisa with a smile.

This one more confident.

Lisa looked back at Dean, still uncertain.

He rolled his eyes and took another huge bite. "Whatever he said. Just don't forget the pie."

"Sorry about my brother. We're looking to get one of those behaviour modification collars to shock him when he's

rude." Sam said, smiling faintly at the poor girl.

Lisa nodded, looking relieved as she hurried away.

"You know. You should really be nicer to waitresses Dean." Xander said wisely.

At Dean's 'Keep it up And you'll regret it' look, Xander got up quickly and sat by Sam, further-est away from Dean

before he continued.

"I'm just saying! Pissed off waitresses sometimes spit in your food! I saw Lisa's friend Judy do it to a guy who

comes in everyday to harass her, then has the nerve not to leave a tip! She could spit in your pie!"

Dean's eyes bulged out in alarm, nearly choking on his last humongous bite.

"Why? Why would ANYONE do that to pie?" Dean asked in disbelief at the mere thought of someone defiling his

favorite desert, then glared at Sam for laughing about it.

xxxxxxxx

Nature had called Sam after he had finished his dinner. The pie came as he was returning. The bathroom was behind

the booth they were sitting at, and Dean's back was facing him as he returned to the booth.

Sam could see Dean move his pie plate around as Xander (who had his arm protectively around his piece) was talking

to Lisa.

So that meant that if there WAS a loogey pie, Dean had just switched it for Sam's loogey free pie.

'Oh no you don't!' Sam thought, fuming.

In two steps Sam reached the table, and before Dean could pick up his fork, Sam switched plates, then sat down with

a smug expression.

But to Sam's utter surprise and complete annoyance, Dean gave Sam a shit eating grin in return as he picked up his

fork and dug in.

Shit!

Dean had tricked him! He hadn't switched the pies after all.

Sam had.

With a disgruntled pout, Sam pushed away the huge piece of delicious looking, but inedible chocolate pie.

"Is there something wrong there Sammy?" Dean asked, his blue green eyes sparkling with laughter.

Lisa looked at Sammy in concern.

"If you don't want the pie, I can get you something else."

"No thank you. I'm just full." Sam gave a brief smile, then resumed glaring daggers at Dean, who was making it very

clear how much Dean was enjoying HIS pie.

Dean then gave many compliments on the creamy, rich taste of the pie. And asked how she had got it to taste soo

good.

The waitress, who thought Dean was eating the piece meant for him, just smiled a secret smile as she walked away.
