Even at the age of forty he hadn’t changed much. Sure, his hair was showing a little grey mixed with his natural brown and one could distinguish an age-line here or there but Xander Harris was still as handsome as he ever was. Actually, he had changed quite a bit.
Seventeen years ago he was stationed in North-Dakota with twelve Slayers along with Andrew and four other Watchers to cover the Hellmouth there. Everything went rather well, he had even fallen in love again two years after Anya perished in the final battle of Sunnydale. His girlfriend was one of the older Slayers they found, Siobhan was twenty when they found her and twenty-three when she died successfully closing the North-Dakota Hellmouth, trading her life for the world. Xander had been heartbroken but had a purpose to live without question: their son Jaden.
Not long after Siobhan died Xander left America and its Slayers to help in England with the main Watcher’s Council. He worked closely with Giles while he tried to raise his son on his own. He was alone for a year when an old ally came to England to help them train Watchers and Slayers. Even with everything that happened in their past Xander came to terms with the fact that he couldn’t imagine his life without his lover.
“Are you almost finished in there?” Xander shouted through the bathroom door. His watch said it was almost time to go and they couldn’t be late. “I swear you take up more time than five Slayers sometimes.” He sighed “Besides, what are you doing? It’s not like you can check your hair in the mirror.” He grinned when Spike opened the door glaring at him.
“I have to be presentable or your sizzling hot man is dust.” Xander shook his head chuckling as Spike turned his attention back at the mirror. Well, at the tube of gel that stood on the cupboard underneath the mirror. His lover spent so many years attacking Angel and his love for gel but the blonde vampire used his fair portion of the stuff as well.
“You’re being a baby; they only use their wands for magic.” Xander said leaning against the doorjamb as he watched his loved blindly ruffle through his hair with the gel.
“That Weasley ponce didn’t get the memo then.” Spike snorted in response remembering the time their friends found out about him being a vampire. Ron had been so shocked that he plunged his wand through Spike’s stomach.
“You vamped out on an eleven year old, what did you expect?” Xander replied laughing. They had been invited to Rose’s, Ron and Hermione’s daughter, thirteenth birthday party two years ago. Their younger son had been bugging Spike to no ends because he looked so much like a bully from his school, Scorpius.
“The bloody git asked for it.” Spike grunted out. He passed Xander entering their bedroom and put on his big black boots. They still worked for the Watcher’s Council but only when they were really needed. Sometimes Spike would just go and spar with some Slayers or just to see how everyone was doing.
“You’re lucky Ron has a poor aim.” Xander let his eyes roam over Spike’s outfit. Thanks to his new friends he was able to get his eye restored. He was so happy when Ginny told him there was a magical hospital that could restore his eye.
“Ready.” Spike stood up and smirked at the lust that filled his lover’s eyes. He knew he made the right choice of attire. He had chosen for a fitting black jeans and a tight fitting dark red t-shirt that hugged his muscles.
“Finally.” Xander replied but kept looking Spike up and down. He forgot all about the Potters’ invitation to Teddy Lupin and Victoire Weasley’s marriage and their invitation to spend Christmas with them.
“All right,” Spike smirked and grabbed his coat from the queen-sized bed “Ginny said she’d be waiting for us around the corner with a portkey.” Xander snapped out of his stupor and frowned.
“What about Jay?” He questioned the vampire. Normally they would pick their son up from King’s Cross Station, like they had done every holiday for the last four years, ever since Jaden went to Hogwarts School Witchcraft and Wizardry.
“Harry’s picking him up when the train arrives at King’s Cross.” Spike replied with a small shrug. He motioned for them to leave but Xander just stared at him openmouthed.
“Alone?” He shrieked out. Spike rolled his eyes at Xander’s over-protectiveness “What if this Harry turns out to be an evil wizard and decides to sacrifice Jaden to some Lord of Chaos. It wouldn’t be the first time.” Xander crossed his arms and dared Spike to retort. Three years ago Andrew had discovered a prophecy that entailed the child of the Human Hyena and the Slayer of Demons being sacrificed to make Metztli immune to the fire of the moon.
“We’ve known him and Ginny for four years, duckie.” Spike replied. He understood Xander’s protectiveness, he was very protective about his adoptive son as well but Xander could push it from time to time.
“Yeah but we’ve never let Jay go with them by himself.” Xander shrieked a little panicked. He could just imagine Jaden being strapped to an altar with that Harry Potter hovering over him mumbling Latin words with a dagger in his hands above his son’s chest.
“Yeah, we have.” Spike walked up to Xander “Last year? Eastern break?” He questioned but received a blank expression. “Okay, two years ago last week of Christmas Harry invited him, too.” He grinned when Xander realized Jaden had been more at the Potters’ place than Albus, James or Lily had been at theirs.
“You told me you dropped him off.” Xander pouted. He was only a little taller than Spike but when it came down to it, Spike was the family’s defender. Xander could stand his own very well and rarely allowed Spike to shield him but on occasions, like this for example, he knew he would lose his ground. Not only because Spike was right but also because he always felt like drowning when he stared into his lover’s blue eyes.
“Point is, we do know them, luv.” He said softly and lifted his chin up just enough to brush his lips against Xander’s. What was meant to be just a chaste kiss soon turned out to be more passionate when Xander gently nipped Spike’s bottom lip, silently asking for entrance which the platinum blonde gladly granted.
“If anything happens you’re sleeping on the couch.” Xander rested his forehead against Spike’s when the kiss ended. Spike laughed heartily and turned away, taking Xander’s hand in his.
“You just end up on the couch with me so you’re gonna have to come up with something new.” He retorted throwing a smirk over his shoulder.
Xander groaned when they touched solid ground again. Spike didn’t mind traveling with a portkey but it wasn’t Xander’s favorite way of traveling. He would pick the Floo network any day over a portkey but Ginny insisted they used a portkey because she had just cleaned her living room.
“Hi dads.” A light brown-haired boy with bright blue eyes greeted the two of them when they entered the Potter’s estate. Because Harry was the Head of the Aurors he made quite some money and had opted to buy a large home not far from London.
“Hey mate.” Spike greeted his son with a ruffle through his hair. In the very beginning Spike had given him hell about Jaden’s mother because she looked a lot like Buffy and Xander had retorted enough that Spike was dating one of Buffy’s best friends.
At the age of forty Xander hadn’t changed much. Sure, he was now in a loving relationship with a vampire with a soul and he had a son by a Slayer. And okay, maybe he was more into the magical community then he was before with his son going to Hogwarts and his social circle mostly existed of witches and wizards that used magic with wands. But no, Xander hadn’t changed, he would still give his life for the people he loved and he will always love the people he lost in his lifetime. He was still the same Xander Harris that got introduced to the supernatural by Buffy Summers, the same Xander that thought his son and the Potters the ‘Charlie Brown Christmas’ tradition.
