Xander sat in his car, waiting patiently for the light to turn green. He obeyed all the easy laws. Even when it was night, no one was on the road in any direction as far as the eye could see. After all, he was still a white hat, sort of.
His day to day life was not the average Jo's idea of normal, but then, it never had been. He'd grown up on the Hellmouth. He didn't have much contact with the old gang any more. His choice, really. They had loved him and he had enjoyed being with them, fighting at their sides, but at the end of the day he was a lone wolf.
Not a wolf really, mind you. He wasn't anymore supernatural than he had been all those years ago when he ran into a railing on his skateboard for the sake of one Buffy Summers. What he was ... well, he was driven.
Work was unhappy with his leave of absence. So were the people here that called him a friend, or family. But the one woman in all the world that understood some of what he was had called. Usually, he would have just taken a day or two off, but this could be more ... time-consuming than the usual.
His phone rang as he began to cross the empty intersection. The caller ID showed it was Anita. He pressed the button for the speaker.
"I'll be there in two hours." He said this with no preamble. He didn't have to pretend with her.
"Who are you bringing?"
"You'll find out when we get there."
"I hate surprises, Edward. You know that." Anita sounded grumpy. The wolf must be acting up again. Or the vampire. She was the one person he knew with a love life that had seen more demons than his own.
"And I like to keep secrets. How do we ever get through a conversation?"
"Whatever - just get here fast. We're all a little jumpy."
"Two hours." He hung up. He knew she would understand. Merging onto the highway, he turned the radio to a country station and relaxed into his drive.
