October 12, 2001
The mood was dark and filled with tension as Tara McClay, Xander Harris, Anya Emerson and Willow Rosenberg stood around the grave of the late Slayer and their friend Buffy Summers. It had been almost six months since the Slayer gave her life to save the world and the life of her little sister Dawn who turned to be a ball of energy known as the Key. Six months of the Scoobies struggling to fight the force of darkness on their own with only the Buffybot as the only other thing to aid them in their fight besides Spike. Now after hours of planning, they’re going to bring Buffy back from the dead and back to Sunnydale where she belonged.
“Does everybody have their candles?” Willow asked in a voice filled with anticipation.
“Mine won’t stay lit.” Anya replied as she struggled with a lighter in one hand and her candle in the other. “It keeps going out.”
“Well make it stay.” Willow snapped rather impatiently. “It has to …” At that point, the Wicca was cut off at the sound of Tara’s voice speaking to Xander.
“What time is it?” Tara asked him. Her eyes and face filled with worry and fear for her girlfriend.
“One minute to midnight. Less.” Xander replied curtly.
Willow was beginning to lose her patience as she said to Anya. “Come on, Anya. Do you have it?”
“Oh, God.” Anya gulped as she struggled to light her candle and after a few seconds, she was finally able to get it lit. As she did, she glanced up at Willow.
“Got it.” The former vengeance demon exclaimed.
“Start the circle now.” Willow commanded as she kneeled on Buffy’s grave while the rest of the Scoobies gathered around the Wicca in a circle. Then she began mixing the ingredients she gathered for the spell, which included the blood of a deer she had killed earlier in the day, into an urn that was in front of her and she began to chant the words of the spell.
“Osiris, keeper of the gate, master of all fate, hear us.”
Then Willow dipped her finger into the blood mixture and anointed herself with it on her forehead and cheeks. Xander forced himself not to shudder at the sight of his best friend having deer blood on her face and forehead. In the light of the candle in front of her, the effect looked nightmarish. Willow began to chant again.
“Before time and after, before knowing and nothing …” Then her voice grew lower more outworldly. “Accept our offering. Know our prayer …” Suddenly, Willow stiffened and her breath caught in her throat as deep cuts appear on her arms like an invisible knife was slashing her.
“Willow!” Xander shouted in horror and he started to get up but was stopped by Tara who looked just as horrified as he was.
“No.” Tara said. “She told me … She’d be tested. This is what’s supposed to happen.” As Xander sat back down, Willow shouted in a strong, clear voice devoid of weakness.
“Osiris! Here lies the warrior of the people! Let her cross over!”
As she finished shouting, the rest of the Scoobies looked on in horror as something rose under Willow’s skin. Bumps the size of beetles race in her body. Again, Xander tried to get up to help her but once again, he was stopped by Tara.
“She needs help!” He cried out.
“Xander, she’s strong.” Tara said with a hint of fear in her voice. “She said not to stop, no matter what. If anything b-b-breaks the cycle now – it’s over.”
Then a rumbling noise filled the air causing everyone except Willow to jump in fear and terror.
“Oh, God. What’s that noise?” Anya gasped sounding every bit as terrified as she looked. She, Tara and Xander struggled to keep it together as the spell continued to run it’s course. Despite the unseen creatures skittering under her skin, Willow shouted out in a weak voice.
“Osiris! Let her cross over!”
Then suddenly the bumps under her skin moved together to create a long rope-like form and it began to move up Willow’s chest and into her throat causing the Wicca to gasp and choke.
“Oh, God … Oh, God.” Tara whimpered. Her eyes wide in horror.
Willow grasped at her throat and fell forward toward the ground. Then her mouth opened as if it was force to open by an invisible force and a snake head appeared in her mouth. Tara screamed in terror at the sight. Xander and Anya gasped. Then the snake slithered out of Willow’s mouth, its long body winding out of her. At that point, Willow let out a painful cry as she took a shaking breath. Tara was beside herself but she struggled to keep it together knowing that Willow didn’t want to the spell to stop no matter what happened.
“It’s a t-test. It’s a test.” She said to herself as if she was trying to reassure herself. Then she saw a crackling red swirl of energy surrounding Willow. After a few moments, the red-headed Wicca was buckling under the effects of the spell as it was gaining strength taking her life-force with it but that didn’t deter her from stopping it.
“Osiris! Release her!” Willow shouted.
Then just as they were succeeding, all hell broke loose. A horrible rumbling noise echoed around the forest and then after a second, the Buffybot came in running toward the Wicca and the Scoobies.
“Willow! I need service.” The Buffybot shouted. Tara, Xander and Anya turned to her. Then demons in motorcycles crashed through the woods looking very hyped. It was pure chaos as the demons, whooping and hollering descend on the Scoobies and the Buffybot.
Anya screamed and dropped her candle. Xander quickly got up dropping his own candle in the process and grabbed both Anya and Tara holding them close. At that point, Tara noticed that her candle and the other ones on the ground didn’t burn out. Instead, they grew brighter.
Willow wasn’t even paying attention to the world around her. She was only focusing on one thing. Resurrecting Buffy.
Then the unthinkable happened.
One of the demons ran over the urn that the blood mixture was in smashing it into pieces all over the ground.
“NO!!!” Willow screamed in rage and frustration. Released from the spell’s energy, she crumpled to the ground but before she fell into unconsciousness, she saw a face that she had never seen before in her life. The face of a woman.
Seeing Willow fall onto the ground, Tara was about to try to run to her when she saw a body appearing next to Willow’s. It looked like the body of a woman judging by the shape of it with blonde hair. Then two more bodies appeared before them. One of them falling on Xander causing him to fall onto the ground. He could tell that the body was that of a man with silver hair. The other body, also a man, laid a few inches away from Anya. The former vengeance demon glanced at it wide-eyed. The other man had long brown hair that went down his back.
As the demons stared at the sight in fear and confusion, Anya saw her chance and grabbed the unconscious man’s shoulders dragging him out of the way of the biker-demons. Xander, seeing what his girlfriend was doing, followed suit by running toward Willow, grabbing her and threw her over one shoulder and then he grabbed the mysterious blonde-haired woman and threw her on his other shoulder.
“Let’s move it!!!!” Xander yelled. “Go!!!”
Tara grabbed the remaining body of the silver haired man and then hurried into the woods with Anya close behind her. As she stumbled through the thick forest, the young Wicca looked over and saw that the former vengeance demon was dragging the body of the other man on her arms not so gently. Then Tara turned back and continued on praying that Willow would be all right.
How is that Willow resurrected three people instead of one?
That was the one question that ran through Xander’s mind as he hurried through the woods. Once he was a safe distance away from the demons, he gently lowered Willow and the other woman down onto the ground. Then Xander took a good look at the woman. She was very pretty looking around his age maybe older. Her blonde hair was in a ponytail. She was dressed in some kind of a uniform like a general’s uniform but different with black boots.
Xander turned back to Willow when he heard her groan softly. “Willow, are you okay?”
The Wicca looked up at him. “Did it work?” she asked weakly.
Xander paused for a moment and then shook his head. “I’m sorry.” He said. At that point, Willow passed out completely in Xander’s arms. Sighing, he turned back to see that the woman was struggling to wake up and after a moment, she fainted but not before saying a name. A name that Xander did not recognize.
