DISCLAIMER: The characters of Supernatural belong to Eric Kripke, the CW, etc. The characters of Buffy belong to Joss Whedon, Fox, the WB, UPN, etc. I’m broke, so suing really would be pointless.
A/N This is AU for Buffy post S4. Dawn exists, she’s human. So there was no key. Everything after the early episodes of S5 didn’t happen. And also an AU for Supernatural post In My Time of Dying, John didn’t die. Anything else I’ll explain along the way. Enjoy!!
The room was silent except for the steady beep and hiss of medical equipment. Sam Winchester sat by the bed of his older brother with his aching head held in his hands. The past few days had been a complete nightmare and it didn’t seem to be getting better. He raised his head and looked at the person lying in the bed. It wasn’t right. Dean Winchester, big bad hunter, larger than life and always in motion lying so still attached to machines that regulated his breathing for him and were keeping him alive.
He had tried talking to his dad but that had just led to more arguments that grew more heated without Dean to referee. In the end John had completely shut down refusing to talk to him, and to give them both some breathing space Sam had decided to come and sit with Dean and try to figure out what to do. Suddenly he had a thought and his heart clenched with a surge of hope. There was someone else who had a vested interest in what happened to Dean, and who could be the solution to all their problems.
He looked down at Dean as he stood up and made his way out of the hospital room. “I’ll be back. Just hold on bro. Please?” He went and stood outside the hospital to make his call needing both the fresh air and the privacy. This wasn’t going to be an easy call to make; he was reluctant to do this but could see no other way to help Dean. He hit speed dial and took a deep steadying breath as the phone rang. After a few seconds it was answered.
“Hello?” Sam frowned as he didn’t recognize the voice.
“Can I speak to Dawn Summers please?”
There was a pause then Sam winced as someone bellowed for Dawn without bothering to move the phone away from her mouth. A few seconds later a familiar voice yelled “Got it!” There was a click as the other person hung up and then she spoke.
“Hello?” Sam smiled; he could hear background noise so he knew she had to be either in the kitchen or the living room where something was always going on. Life was never quiet in the Summers household.
“Hey Dawnie, its Sam, I need your help.” There was a pause and the background noise dropped. “What's wrong?” Sam heard the fear in her voice she was trying to hide and it triggered his own, and tears filled his eyes and he blinked furiously. “That would be a very long horrible story, which I will explain later, but for right now, we were in a car crash. Dad has injured his arm and a thigh wound. I’m okay just basically cuts and bruises, but Dean.” He paused and took a deep breath. “He’s not doing so well, he’s been in a coma since we got to the hospital and he’s already coded once. We need to get him back and for that I’m going to need help. He needs you, Dawnie, the family needs you.” He could hear Dawn take a deep breath and even through the phone line he could tell she was crying. He felt remorse and guilt curl in his gut. “I’m sorry to drop all this on you like this.” Dawn sighed, and he heard muffled noise as she held the phone away from her and called for, apparently, everyone in the house.
“Sammy its fine, don’t worry about it. I want the entire explanation at a later date, but for right now, I need to know where exactly you are.” Sam gave her the address of the hospital. He heard her passing on information about what had happened to them to someone in the background. Sam recognized the voices asking questions, concern evident in their tone, in the background and even through the worry he felt a smile break out. “I take this is going to be another Scooby Gang field trip?” Dawn chuckled.
“You know it. Right according to everyone we should be ready to go in about fifteen minutes, so we’ll be with you in about twenty minutes courtesy of Air Willow.” Sam smiled, that was Dawn irreverent even in the face of a family emergency. She shared that trait with Dean. He shook his worry off and focused on what Dawn was saying. He felt his heart swell with pride as he listened to her talk. She was an amazing person with a huge heart.
“You need to hang on Sammy. Believe me when I say that nothing is going to happen to Dean. We won’t let it. Help is on the way.” After thanking everyone and telling Dawn he’s see her soon, he hung up. He was slightly shocked to find himself smiling. He’d known he could always count on Dawn.
Last name Summers or not, she had been born a Winchester, and above anything and everything was family. Knowing she was coming he felt truly hopeful for the first time in days, but he was also buoyed by the fact that if anyone could figure out what was wrong with Dean it would be Buffy, Willow, Xander, Tara or Giles. The infamous Scooby Gang of Sunnydale, California collectively were knowledgeable on a whole other level and knew more than he could ever find out on his own. And most importantly they were Dawn’s other family. And this family always looked after its own.
Well, that was part one, sorry if its a bit short.
