Daniel was beginning to understand Jack. There was only so much boredom a person, ascended or not, could take before blowing up something seemed like a really good idea. ‘In order to facilitate his acclimatization,’ he wasn’t even allowed to watch his friends and he was beginning to doubt the wisdom of accepting Oma’s offer.
Speak of the devil, he thought as the lady herself appeared.
“Daniel.” she said, smiling warmly. “It has come to my attention that you are… discontented in your current state. Perhaps a new task would be more appropriate. Come with me.”
“Normally, I would not intercede so soon. Many problems can heal themselves if given enough time,” Oma said as the two made their way through the ascended plane. “However, the risk in this case is too great. I can only hope that you may be more resourceful then I have been.”
“I thought the Ascended don’t interfere.”
“We do not interfere with events on earth; that is true. However, this is a… unique problem for one of the Ascended.” They had reached a wall with a door in it by this time and Oma gestured for Daniel to go first.
“What do you expect me to do?” he asked, as he opened the door.
Oma grimaced, an expression Daniel never expected to see on the face of an Ancient. “Anything, Daniel. Please.” And with that, she pushed him into the room. Now Daniel was intrigued. What could possibly have frustrated the Ancients so much?
“Did she send you to talk to me?” asked a sullen young brunette who was sitting off to one side in a corner.
“Oma? Well… uh actually.” Daniel began as she turned towards him with a curious look on her face.
“Uh… she, Oma that is, said that she was having trouble with something, but she didn’t say…” His voice trailed off as he saw the expression on her face.
“She didn’t say what it was, huh? I know, believe me. That cryptic shit was old when I was in high school. I *so* don’t want to deal with it now.”
“You wouldn’t happen to know just what Oma wants me to do, would you.”
“Talk me out of Descending.”
“I want to go back to what I did before. I can’t help my friends while I’m up here. Oma won’t let me go back, though. She saved my life, actually. Some big bad wants to use my body to take over the world,” the young woman told him.
“I knew someone as ugly as Skip shouldn’t be trusted,” Daniel heard her mutter parenthetically.
“I’m… you m… um”
“Sorry, I totally forgot,” the woman said, apparently realizing she hadn’t introduced herself. “Pleased to meet you. Cordelia Chase, but my friends call me Cordy. Cheerleader, actress, secretary and Seer. Ascended due to inter-dimensional conspiracies 20 May 2002.”
“Dr. Daniel Jackson. Archeologist and linguist. Ascended because of radiation poisoning 10 May 2002. Just… uh, Seer?”
By the time the two Ascended had finished giving each other their life stories, they were on their way to being friends for life. They were looking in on their friends on earth when Jack was captured by Baal. Daniel wished that he could do something to help his friend.
“Go help him.” Cordy said. Daniel stared at her in shock. “I’ve seen that look before. You want to help him and you can. We’re not allowed to appear to people who don’t know we’re Ascended. Jack knows about you. You can help him. I can’t help my friends, but you can help Jack. Get going before I kick your Ascended ass down there myself. I’ll cover for you with Armani-less.”
“Cordy, this being that wants to use your body -- it’s dangerous. Please don’t try…”
“I won’t. Now, go. Save your friend and come back and tell me more,” she said, shoving him on his way.
A little while later.
“Quite honestly, I still can’t get my head around the concept of demons.”
Cordelia nodded, understandingly. “Just one question. Aliens? Really?”
