"What do you mean, consequences? You didn't mention any consequences when you said the hyena could be exorcised! Why didn't you mention consequences before?!" Buffy ended up nearly shouting at her Watcher.

"In the c-course of our research, we f-failed to realize that. . . that two pages had been stuck together." Giles looked highly embarrassed, pink colour flushing his cheeks. It really was a rookie and painful mistake for him to make. The warnings and hidden engraving had been graphic enough for him to be thankful the girls had not seen it.

"What kind of consequences are we talking about here? I'm not going to. . . revert or anything, right? Right, G-Man?" Xander looked at the older man, his expression practically begging for reassurance.

"No, no. More s-something along the lines of. . . l-lycanthropy. A were-hyena, if you will. The book simply stated that 'One so possessed of Alpha shall be cursed forever more to answer the call of Mother Moon's rapture.' It b-basically means you will be a hyena on the three days of the full moon and the. . . transition will be both painful and p-pleasurable." Giles whipped off his glasses for a thorough cleaning. It pained him to have to tell Xander this. The boy was only fifteen years old. He would have been far too young to be infected conventionally. . .

"I'm a were-hyena? Oh god. I think. . . oh god. I have to go." Xander got up and practically ran from the library. Buffy and Willow knew enough to give him some time.

Xander left the school behind, running out into the night. He was terrified. The ordeal wasn't over, the hyena was still in him. He refused to accept that he was powerless, refused to roll over and let her control him- them- whatever. He would put her on leash if it was the last thing he did. He would not let her hurt his friends.

As his luck would have it, his control was about to be tested by a fledge in want of a snack. "Well, lookie here. I remember you, looser. You hang with that Buffy chick, right? Wonder if I'll have a chance at her once she finds your corpse?" And as Murphy and his Law decreed, Xander didn't have a stake on him. Great.

The fledge lunged, hands outstretched to drag him in for a bit of lethal necking. Xander ducked, tripped, and rolled into the fall. He could feel something angry and female waking up inside him. It felt like fur rubbing against his ribs. . . from the inside. He gave her a mental smack on the nose and rolled away from another lunge by the vampire. Thank god the guy was clumsier than him.

She growled and the noise rumbled up and out of his throat before he could stop it. The vamp paused and gave him a confused look before his hand shot out for the kill. She plunged up through him in response, clogging his throat with fur and musk. She surged up and claws broke through his fingers, clear fluid and blood spraying from his nail beds as he tore into the vampire.

When he was himself again, he was covered in vamp dust and his hands in blood and goo. Xander sighed and headed home. Better not to tempt fate.
