"If you had to sacrifice yourself for a greater purpose, would you do it?"

Angel turned to face Buffy as she tossed a stake from one hand to the other. They were patrolling the local cemetery, even though there was no need. It had only been an excuse to get out and talk, which neither of them admittedly did very well. "You mean the way Spike did?" His tone was slightly accusing, but he wondered if she was comparing the two of them.

"No, not exactly." She sighed. "This is something you wouldn't come back from. I'm talking about you giving up your soul. Permanently. You'd be staked or beheaded right afterward, just to prevent Angelus from doing any damage."

He looked startled. "You're not just playing a what if game. You're serious."

She said nothing in response, finally shrugging at him when he continued to stare.

"What kind of greater purpose are we talking about?"

"Transferring your soul to someone who would need it."

"And all I get out of it is permanent death?"

"Well, that's the theory. But Spike and Darla both came back from it somehow. Maybe you would, too. Except, without a soul, I don't know if that would be an option for you."

Angel leaned against a grave marker as he thought back on his life. "I've been around awhile."

"Yeah." Buffy mumbled.

"I'll do it."
