“We're fried. I got no control.” Wash yelled looking about his console.
“Where's the backup?” Mal yelled as he flipped controls. “Where's the backup?”
They began to spin, slowly at first then picking up speed. Turning and turning as they fell from the sky. Wash strained himself against the forces the spin was creating, moving himself closer and closer to the emergency ignition switch. Zoe, Mal and Wash all groan loudly as the forces crash down on them. As suddenly as the ship had begun to spin their jerked in the other direction. Wash finally getting the left engine to fire momentarily, stuttering and spluttering to life.
“Backup reads at 20%.” Zoe yelled looking at the instrument panel next to her. “Can you get us down?”
“I'm going to have to glide her in.” Wash yelled back, the strain of the ship on his face as he held on tight to the controls.
“Will that work?” Zoe asked in a shocked voice.
They fell towards the ground, the ship starting to straighten as Wash arm wrestled with the controls, Mal and Zoe watching with horror as the ground began to loom up at them, the nose of the transport ship slowly moving up as they fly forward towards the flight deck. They hit the ground, the landing legs tearing off as they bunny hop once, beginning to skid down the flight deck and entering a hanger. The left engine tared off as they hit pillars and obstacles as they slid further and further into the hanger, the ship turning as it crashes to a stop, the ship shudders for a second as it settles, the cockpit suddenly bathed in the red light of the emergency backup as it finally looses power.
Wash sits in wonder for a second, not believing their still relatively in one piece. “I am a leaf on the wind. Watch how...” Wash let out before a giant crash is heard, a large shape crashing through the windshield. He has time to open his mouth in shock before he slumps forward, a massive harpoon impaling him to his chair.
“Ahhh!” Xander yelled as he sat up in the small bed, sweat dripping off his body as he felt his chest, pulling at an invisible harpoon. “Get it off, get it off!” he yelled.
“Whoa!” A female, Emma, said rushing into the room. “Boss? You ok? Boss?” she said moving to his side. She was young, maybe eighteen, maybe even younger, her light brown hair hung in a small ponytail, slightly messed from sleep. She was dressed in a simple tank top and loose fitting pants. “You been yellin in your sleep.” Emma said reaching a hand to his shoulder, her eyes drifting to the various scars covering his chest. “You have that dream again?” she asked as he looked about then, his eye adjusting to the lack of light.
“Yeah,” he replied, his voice catching in his throat. “Saw them again, saw him…” He said as he swung his feet over the side of the bed, he reached over to the table besides it, picking up a small box. He sat there staring at it before letting out a sigh, opening it and looking inside. The object stared back at him as he reached in and grabbed the new instrument he had bought, a high tech eye to replace his Old Stone Age one. He inserted the new hardware, the blue of the computer component’s pupil different to that of his remaining hazel one. There was a small chirp as he activated the eye, looking suddenly to the cortex screen on the far wall. “You sign us in?” he asked getting up.
“Nah,” Emma replied looking at him puzzled. “Didn’t think we’d be here long enough to use the cortex.” She said getting up and moving next to him as he activated the screen.
The Monitor lit up, a welcome screen flashed the Blue Sun logo, Xander let out a grown at seeing the company name. It was followed shortly by the usual stuff, quick bulletins, adds for core planet living and the Oaty Bar song. He quickly logged in, moving to their shared inbox.
“We got a message.” He said before the screen flashed its own alert of one new message. He quickly retrieved the text based wave. “From… Zo?” he said looking at the screen, not sure what to make of this development. “Says to send her a wave.”***************************************************

Wash sits in wonder for a second, not believing their still relatively in one piece. “I am a leaf on the wind,” Wash began. “Watch how...”
“Wash!” Zoe called as they both began to unstrap themselves out of their chairs.
“Zo…” Wash says jumping out of his chair, moving to her side before a giant crash is heard, a large shape crashing through the windshield, Wash throwing himself over his wife’s body. Wash and Zoe turn to look at the chair he was in moments before, a massive harpoon now impaling it, Wash turns back to his wife.
“Wash baby, baby!” Zoe says looking from the chair to her partner. “Speak to me… I almost lost you.” She says kissing him passionately. “Scared me.”
“Won’t happen again.” He says with a small laugh as they hug, followed by more kissing.
They break apart, Zoe staring at the chair as she stands, still holding on to his shoulders, Mal yelling something to her, but not really hearing him.
“Baby…” Zoe said, a tear escaping her eye.
“Zoe!” Mal yelled pulling her to the ground as a harpoon flies past were they were standing seconds before.
Zoe has time to look up from the ground to where Wash was standing, now no longer there. She looks to the chair where lifeless eyes stare back at her; where Wash’s lifeless eyes stare back at her. The painful truth falling on her like the harpoon had pierced her own chest and not her husbands.
That’s when she woke. It ended the same every time, Wash’s eyes staring at her, no time for him to say anything, disbelief on his face as he sits there slumped froward. Zoe sat up, swinging her legs over the side of the double bed, sighing as she looked around the room. Toy Dino's, bright colourful shirts draped over things and pictures of Wash laid scattered about the bunk. It had been two months since her Wash had been taken away from her, the urge to clean the room long gone. She took a deep breath in, the room still smelled like him; she closed her eyes as she inhaled his scent, picturing her husband there with her.
A beeping knocked her out of her dreams, a flash of Wash’s lifeless face flashing before her eyes before opening them as her nightmare came back to her. She looked up at the screen next to her bed, flashing that it had an incoming wave. She grabbed a shirt, quickly putting it on and pressing the answer button, a welcome face smiling back at her.
“Xander…” Zoe said, a small smile gracing her face.
“Zoe,” Xander said to his old friend’s wife. “Just got your wave.” He said as she stood, getting dressed. “Have I come at a bad time?”
“All bad… Nowadays.” Zoe replied as she pulled on her pants.
“Yeah… Guess they are now that Wash…” he said looking at his feet, his tech eye showing as much sadness as his real one. “You wanted to see me?” he said trying to change the subject.
“We’re touching down on Persephone in a few days.” Zoe began as she pulled on her belt followed by a small brown leather vest. “We’re looking for someone to train one of the crew, next to Wash you’re the best, thought you might like the job.”
“Yeah… Next to Wash,” he said with a smile as she finished dressing, strapping a gun to her hip. “Wash was one hell of a flyer; no-one could replace that man.”
“Damn right!” Zoe said looking at the man. “Got a girl on board. Wash would be proud of her… She’s like Family.” She said looking at her hands. “Seems only right for kin of Wash’s to train her.”
“We weren’t never kin Zo” Xander said with a sad smile.
“Not the way Wash use to tell it.” Zoe said making eye contact with him. “Said you were as close as brothers back in Flight.”
“Yeah…?” Xander said moving a hand through his hair. “Persephone you say?” He asked looking off camera. “What you reckon Em? Wanna ride in a Firefly?”
“Never been up in one…” Emma said with a smile coming into view. “Hey Zoe,” she said waving to the screen, Zoe waving back. “Ah what the heck, gots nothin better to do Boss.”
“I’ll take that as a yes.” Zoe said with a smirk as Emma moved off. “She’s getting older.”
“Yep, that she is…” Xander said watching her move away. “Just makes me feel old.”
“Cos you are!” Emma yelled off camera, Zoe smirking as Xander’s face flashed with frustration.
“You need a latrine scrubber on that boat of yours?” Xander said with a laugh.
“Hey!” Emma yelled as a pillow hit him in the back of the head.
“I think we have that covered already.” Zoe said with a smile.
“Kids…” he said looking back over his shoulder. “I’ll see you in a few days Zo...” Xander said as he moved to end the wave.
“Yeah, see you in a few.” Zoe said as she switched off the screen.***************************************************
“God, you can be such a brat sometimes.” Xander said once he’d hung up.
“Just how Buddha made me.” Emma replied with a smile. “So… Serenity huh?”
“Yep, Serenity…” Xander said moving back to the bed. “Guess it’s meant to be…The wave… The dreams… It’s the same thing every time,” He said as Emma sat next to him. “He lands, then…”
“I die…” Emma said looking away from him.
“Emma…” Xander said looking at his assistant. But Emma no longer sat next to him, she was gone, replaced with a pilot, a friend. Wash sat there dressed in his overalls and a bright blue Hawaiian shirt.
“I died…” she said, this time in Wash’s voice. “You have to help them.” He said turning to Xander, arms outstretched. “You gotta go.”
“Wash…” Xander said looking at the former pilot.
“You have to train her,” Wash said grabbing Xander by the arm. “She has to fly… Fight! Teach her what we learned in flight…What you learned in school.”
“I…” Xander said as Wash began to fade.
“She needs a teacher…” Wash said as he disappeared, being replaced by Emma. “Needs a Watcher…” Emma finished. “Ahhmmm… Whoa…” She said sitting forward, letting out a sigh, her body slightly drained of energy. “He’s sad… Angry.”
“Can’t blame him…” Xander said placing a hand on her back.
“Yeah…” she said, Xander moving his hand on her back, slowly massaging it, knowing what happens to her body when she channels someone. “Serenity… Good name for a boat.” Emma said with a small smile looking up at him.
“Yep, Serenity…” Xander said getting up. “Start packing… We leave first light.”
“Another adventure here we come!” She said with a giggle as she ran to her room.
“Once again, feeling like an old man here…” he called after her.
“Its cos you are!” She called back.
“Only by a few years girly!” He yelled as she popped her head back into the room.
“It’s still old Boss.” She giggled again as he threw a shoe at her. “You throw kinda slowly for an old man too.” She yelled as she ran to her room.
He stood there, packing his gear into his duffel bag. He stopped as he thought about the dream, seeing Wash and his friends falling like that, the last few moments of the pilot’s life. He smirked as he thought back to his friend, the fun times they had had in the past. The smirk soon fading as he thought about that word… Past. He hated it. A word always used when thinking of things from long ago, when thinking of friends. And now Wash had joined the long list of friends lost, perished in a fight they had no need to be in. Another friend of his, lost to the past. ***************************************************
