10. Eye Of The Storm

Serenity says: Be still. I will hold you within me and you will be made safe.

River nods like she agrees; it would not do to hurt Serenity’s feelings. But she knows better.

It isn’t safe. For anyone.

Across the verse they reach for her, two by two, hands of blue. Their ugly thoughts invade her brain and she screams and screams until Simon is the Angel of Mercy and the prick of the needle delivers darkness.

She can feel it; soon that day will come when she has to prove that she is more girl than weapon.

She waits.
