chapter 15

The red telephone. That familiar symbol of power and authority, directly linking the owner to the President of the United States, and vice versa. It was a blessing and a curse, although these days, General George Hammond was finding it harder and harder to see the blessing. For while the red phone gifted him with great authority, it also meant that HE was the one responsible for reporting the worst (and most embarrassing) screwups directly to the top. In most cases, Hammond felt the sting of the President's displeasure personally, as the actions of his subordinates reflected on himself. This...was not one of those days. In fact, he found it difficult to remember a major error he'd enjoyed reporting more than this one.

"Mr. President, this is General Hammond speaking.

".....................?"

"You've heard about the assault? Well, Mr. President, he seemed to take it rather well, given the circumstances. Turned out to be one of those cultural things."

"...................?"

"Actually, it turned out that Senator Kinsey was proposing marriage by slapping him. The alien representative asked if he really meant it, and Kinsey confirmed it."

"......................!"

"I know, Mr. President, I was surprised as well. But when Xan...the representative explained, he also rejected the proposal. If Kinsey had been the one to reject him, after having confirmed his intentions..."

".................."

"A diplomatic nightmare indeed, sir. The representative is a member of the royal house of his world, and apparently the successor to their king, or shares some kind of direct family connection to the king...the relationship seemed a bit jumbled, but suffice to say, he is NOT happy. Such an insult could have sparked an irreparable diplomatic incident."

"........................................?"

"He said that he would be willing to forgive and forget, but only if he is spared the sight of the man."

"............................................."

"A promotion, sir? How would promoting Kinsey....?"

"......................"

"Oversight comittee on pest control litigation? That sounds like an appropriate punishment, sir."

"...............................................!"

"Yes sir, thank you Mr. President. I'll be sure and pass the word along."

Some days, it was good to be the boss. It was days like this that made him glad that he'd put off retirement.

Author's note: I know this was a bit of a short chapter, but this conversation just would not leave me alone until I got it down on paper. More will be forthcoming soon.
