Loved and adored and will make me love you forever and ever, and will make me post more chapters.Concrit:
Would be absolutely super; I work really hard on this stuff, so I'd like to know if it's actually any good. And I'm always willing to improve. :) Seriously. Comment. Even if it's bad. I promise. Seriously. PLEASEDisclaimer:
Not mine; me = poor;Warnings/Squicks:
Set at the end of season 5, and I guesstimated Xander's age to be 19-ish, and i figured Mal to be in his early thirties, so there's a bit of an age gap; other than that, nothing particularly squick-worthy, except the m/m thing, if that's not your particular cup of tea.Summary:
What if Xander went through the portal instead of Buffy, and found himself in the cargo bay of Serenity? Hijinks, that's what.Notes:
Okay, so the Serenity verse is a teensy bit AU, due to the fact that the movie happened (in that we know much more about River's capture and whatnot) but Wash is very much alive. (side note: I definitely started crying right there in the theatre); also Sheppard Book is not on the ship. Not positive if he's dead or not, he's just not around. The entire series is fair game for random references.Notes 2:
Story will be on the short side; probably about 6-7 chapters, less than 10 000 words; also stipulation 5 of the challenge may not happen... we'll have to see.Notes 3:
I completely manipulated the scene on top of the tower to suit my own ends, so it's not precisely canon.
Xander scrambled onto the top of the tower only a few steps behind Spike, but they were both too late. Spike ripped the priest off of Dawn and threw him over the edge as Xander approached the young girl, who was looking at her blood-covered hands in horror.
“It’s too late,” she whispered as tears streamed down her cheeks. “It’s the only way,” she choked out as she bent down to retrieve the knife. Spike snatched the knife away before she reached it and Xander bundled her up in his arms as his mind worked frantically. Buffy was unconscious on the platform and the portal underneath them was growing larger every second. Who knew what would start pouring out?
Xander gestured Spike closer and transferred Dawn to him. “Take her,” he shouted to be heard over the roaring wind and the sounds of the hell-bound creatures down below. “Get her and Buffy down off the tower!”
Spike looked at him in angry frustration. “What the bleeding hell are you going on about?” he shouted back. “It’s too late, we’ve got to go!”
Xander licked his lips nervously. “There might be another way to close the portal.” He looked down at the increasing pandemonium on the ground. “Look Spike, we don’t have time for this! When the monks made Dawn they used Buffy’s blood because the Slayer line would protect her. But everything about her and Buffy is magical and ancient; they needed her to be human too, needed her to be grounded in this time, so they added some 100% human grade blood to their little magic potion.” He laughed bitterly. “The monks took the reason they chose me to the grave with them.”
Understanding started to dawn on Spike’s face. “She’s made from me, Spike, so my blood should close the portal.” He helped the injured Spike lift Buffy over his shoulders in a fireman carry. “Take care of them, okay? Make sure they know that it’s not their fault. Make sure Dawn knows. Tell them that I love them. Giles and Tara too. You’ve helped us a lot. I know you’ll look after them.” After Dawn, still silent in her shock, had started down the ladder, Xander turned to walk to the end of the platform.
“Harris!” he heard Spike call. He turned around. Spike hesitated, then held out his hand. “It shouldn’t have ended like this, mate.” Xander clasped his hand and nodded solemnly. Then Spike started carefully down the ladder and Xander moved to the edge of the platform overlooking the growing portal.
Then he jumped.
