Summary: The other Masters asked him why.

She was arrogant, hard-headed, stubborn, righteous, and always absolutely convinced she was right and everyone else was wrong, including him.

She could barely levitate a pebble, often giving in to anger when things did not go her way.

The other Masters wondered why he would take on such a horror as his apprentice. Their questions whispered through the Force like a silent wind. They tried not to bother him – a member of the council must know what he was doing – but still, they did not understand.

Let them wonder.

For months, it had been enough that he knew why he taught her the ways of the Force. He had not taken a padawan in many years, fearing he would be unable to adequately guide a child away from the dark that so surrounded them now. With her, he knew he’d never need to. She was dark, yes, but her connection to the Force was weak and her will was strong. She would never turn.

Still the Masters asked him why.

And now he was ready to show them.

“Gotta do better than that, Skywalker!” the little blonde human taunted as her opponent landed hard on the arena floor.

Mace grinned, a rarity on his stony face.

Yes, now the Masters knew why he’d taken her as padawan.

She might be more difficult to tolerate than a mynock’s piercing cry but she made him look good on the sparring mats. This time, he was going to be known as the Master who trained this year’s Dueling Champion.

Kenobi had hoarded that title for too long.
