Fred was about to examine the strange device she had found somewhere in the depths of Wolfram & Hart’s storage. It was made of a shiny metal, but her scanners couldn’t tell her the exact components, it seemed to have nothing in common with anything on earth.
The form was equally strange, it looked like three tentacles of different length and diameter, coming out of an elliptic base, twisted around each other in an almost impossible way. It made her dizzy, when she tried to follow one of them from base to end.
Fred could not see any control panels or buttons, but she had been able to find a power signature. Now she was sure there must be some way or another to use this thing or open it. She just needed to find out how. Pushing her glasses up her nose again, she got closer, some stray strands of hair falling into her face. As she almost touched the device with the tip of her nose, the door behind her opened.
“Good evening, Miss,” a cheerful voice said. Fred’s heart almost stopped beating and she quickly turned around to the intruder. A young man with slightly ruffled brown hair, wearing a brown suit was rushing towards Fred, giving her a wide, somewhat manic smile.
At least she thought he was rushing to her, instead he just passed her, putting on some dark framed rectangle glasses and bent down to the strange device she was investigating.
“What a beauty,” he almost shouted, “haven’t seen a fully functioning multi-dimensional power reactor in a while.” His hands started to stroke the surface of the silvery device, before he turned to Fred.
“Do you even know what you got here? No, of course you don’t, it won’t be invented for another 5000 years…” When he saw her confused face, he stopped to babble and took her by the hand. “Come and have a look,” he said, the manic smile still on his face.
He started to explain how the power reactor worked and was astonished, as she could follow some of his explanations. Soon they were talking about all kinds of technical and physical requirements that were needed to create such a powerful thing. A power reactor, small enough to fit into a drawer but powerful enough to be a power supply for a whole city. But it was dangerous as well, in the wrong hands, it could destroy half a planet.
After a long talk, they decided it would be best if the Doctor was taking the power reactor with him, as it wouldn’t be of any use for several thousand years. The danger that it could be used as a weapon was too big and in order to use it as a power supply, there would have a lot of inventions to be made first.
An hour later, Fred was still in the lab, looking at the now empty table. She wondered, who this strange Doctor really was and if she ever would see him again.
