Meet Garlic Exposition, Basil's Little Brother
Trust me, The Covenant and Buffy would have been a lot more fun if I owned them.
Sorry for the long delay, if anyone is still reading this. Been working on six different stories at once and stuck on all six at various points. I'm going to try to update a little more often but I can't promise specific intervals. Thanks for reading!
Giles is a bit OOC in this beginning scene, sorry, I'm not the best at writing him.
Dawn listened to the phone ring, begging, "Please pick up, please be Giles, please pick up, please be..."
"SWCI, Rupert Giles speaking."
"Giles!" she squealed, causing Giles to have to switch ears on the phone.
"Yeah, it's me. Who had 'Dawn finds an evil witch on her first night there' in the pool?"
"I believe it was Xander. Let me check. Yes, it's Xander."
"Good. Send him when Buffy demands a babysitter sent. Now, about the witch. His eyes turn black when he uses his power. There are at least two other boys that use the same kind of magick but they're not evil. It seems to be thought-driven, because the good one that I know of used his without words or gestures. But there seems to be a ritual component for bigger things, because the evil one was meditating when he was spying on one of the girls that lives across the hall from me."
"Giles, you know we don't like to hear those words."
"Yes, well this calls for it. In the mid 17th century, there was a group of five Watchers who decided that they could help the Slayer more if they had powers themselves. They found a ritual to strip the powers from a demon and distribute it among the five of them. The ritual succeeded, but the Council rejected them as tainted and demanded that they leave England. They went to the New World and settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts where they discovered that the powers would be passed down to the oldest son of each family and also that the powers would prematurely age the users if used to excess. They vowed not to use them except in times of great need, but the powers were addictive and that vow was eventually broken. They were named Danvers, Garwin, Parry, Putnam, and Sims. Putnam is thought to have started the Witch Hunts with his excesses in the late 17th century and to have been killed in them. The other four families are probably still there in Ipswich, so I would look at them first and be very careful. The Council had a standing avoidance order for them. It was determined that they could take care of their own backyard, and the Watchers would leave them alone."
"I kind of met all four of them tonight. They seemed really nice though. The evil one isn't one of the four of them. His name is Chase Collins and he just transferred in this year. Could Putnam have had a child that no one knew about?"
Giles sighed, "It's certainly possible, and I will look into it."
"Great. Could you also look into a solution to my problem without killing him? I think it would be a bad thing if he just disappeared, not to mention he's human. Oh, and I can feel when they use their powers. They acted like I shouldn't have been able to, do you think it's the Keyness?"
"It's possible, but I'm afraid we just don't know enough about the Key to be certain. That's one more thing to research, and I'll keep this between us until I find something out for both our sakes."
"Good idea. Goodnight, Giles."
"Goodnight, Dawn. Pleasant dreams."
Pogue asked, "What makes you think it was Reid?"
"It's always him," Caleb said exasperatedly, "I've never felt when one of us has Used before, though."
"Maybe it's because you're so close to Ascending?"
"I don't know, maybe."
Pogue smirked, "So what are we going to do about that new girl, Dawn? She felt Reid use, it's only a matter of time before she finds out about the rest of us. And really, how did
she feel Reid use?"
"I don't know. Wasn't there something about a person who could feel our Power but couldn't use it in the Book of Damnation?"
Pogue snorted, "How should I know? Tyler's the Loremaster, ask him."
"I will, but... Jesus Christ!" Caleb turned his head and there in the passenger seat was a dead person. The body looked at him then turned into a creature, screamed, and shredded itself before disappearing. When Caleb turned to look back at the road, he ran head on into a logging truck. The car exploded into its component parts then reformed after all the pieces had passed the truck.
There was a tinny voice from the passenger floorboard as Caleb slammed on the brakes and stopped the car on the shoulder, "Caleb, come on, man! Pick up the phone! Caleb, what's going on?"
Caleb picked up the phone and answered tightly, "I just saw a darkling. It was in the form of that dead kid they found down at the Dells."
Pogue responded, "Yeah, I saw his picture in the newspaper this morning. But who would send you a darkling?"
"I have no idea, but something's wrong. I can feel it."
"Look, we gotta talk to Reid tonight
. He'll probably be at Nicky's, so we'll see him there."
Caleb hung up the phone and took a deep breath, then shifted his car into gear and peeled out.
Kate looked up from her shopping to see Caleb standing at the pharmacy counter, "Caleb!"
Sarah and Dawn came around from the adjacent aisles and said, "Hey," and "What's up?" respectively.
Chase jumped out at Kate and she smacked him in the chest and said, "You scared me."
Chase and Caleb shook hands and exchanged greetings, then Kate suggested, "I'm gonna call Pogue and see if he wants to see the new Brad Pitt. Anyone else wanna go?"
Caleb said he had to run errands for his mother, Sarah and Dawn both said they'd seen it, and Caleb invited them to go with him on his errands. Sarah agreed hastily, but Dawn declined.
"I'm just gonna wander and look around town. Thanks though."
Dawn was walking down the main drag away from the drugstore when Tyler and Reid pulled up in Tyler's Hummer. Reid rolled down the window, looked at her and said, "Get in."
Dawn snorted, "I don't think so, Garwin," and started walking again. In response to his glare, she snarked, "Spike was my favorite babysitter. You, an American seventeen-year-old imitation, do not
Tyler pushed Reid against the back of his seat while he was sputtering indignantly and leaned over him to talk to Dawn. "Dawn, please. We need to talk to you about magick and we don't want to do it in the middle of the street."
"Where did you have in mind?"
Dawn looked at him questioningly.
Tyler grinned, "Sorry. It's the top of the bluffs overlooking the Dells. Where the party was last night?"
Dawn thought for a moment then opened the back door and got in. "Ok. Let's go."
Reid looked at her across the seat, "Why Latin?"
"For the spells. Why Latin?"
"Most of getting my kind of magick to work is focusing on the desired result and being sure of what I want. Speaking the words in Latin makes me concentrate on what I'm asking for more than if I said them in English," Dawn explained.
"That makes sense actually. Our power is more thought driven, but it can go weird if we're not focused on exactly what we want. So, is your power gifted to you by something or is it internal?" Tyler asked.
"I draw energy from natural forces and the Goddess and tell it what I want it to do. Speaking of origins," she segued awkwardly, "what do you know about how you got your powers?"
Tyler answered, "Not a lot. We know they come down through the oldest male of each generation, we know that our families fled England to avoid persecution..."
Dawn interjected, "Actually they fled England to avoid the Watcher's Council." She proceeded to explain their family history as recorded by the Watcher's Council, finishing with, "And while they were big arseholes and may have exaggerated a bit, we don't think they outright lied about this because it was used as a cautionary tale for consorting with demons. Which wouldn't have worked if there wasn't some semi-independent proof somewhere."
Tyler and Reid looked at each other for a moment, then Tyler said diplomatically, "We'll have to talk to someone before we can confirm or deny anything else. There's a Covenant of Secrecy for a reason, you know?"
Reid interjected before she could respond, "So can we ask you some more questions about your brand of magick?"
While Reid and Dawn discussed magick and flirted, Tyler got out of the car and called Caleb.
"Yeah, bro?" Caleb answered distractedly.
"We need to talk about Dawn. She knows how our ancestors got the Power, or says she does anyway, but what she said makes sense in a bizarre kind of way. It also explains why John Putnam went crazy and exposed witchcraft and why our powers are addictive and damaging."
"I can't really talk right now. Sarah and I will meet you guys at Nicky's and we'll talk after, ok?"
"Yeah, sure. Sorry to interrupt your courtship with our history," Tyler said sarcastically and hung up. He took a deep breath and called Pogue.
"Do you have a minute, Pogue?"
"Sure, baby boy. What do you need?"
"You know that new girl, Dawn?"
"Yeah. Was talking to Caleb about her earlier actually."
"Can you meet Reid, her, and me at the basement in about twenty minutes?"
"I don't think we should take her there unless we all four agree, Ty. I mean, all we know about her is that she can sense when Reid uses."
"Well, we're on Marblehead. Where do you want to meet us?"
"I'll be there in ten minutes. Does she know about all four of us or just Reid?"
"She knows all five names, she's probably smart enough to figure it out."
"Allright. I'll call Caleb on the way."
"I already did. He's in his car with Sarah."
"Okay. We'll decide what to tell Dawn after I talk to her and I'll take the heat when Caleb finds out."
Tyler hung up the phone, climbed back into his car and said, "Pogue is on his way. He'll decide what we're allowed to say then take the heat when Caleb objects."
Reid and Dawn both nodded and Tyler joined in their conversation and flirting.
