Chapter One

Disclaimer: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and AVP: Alien vs. Predator belong to their respective creators, Joss Whedon and Paul W.S. Anderson.

When Maxwell Stafford showed up on her doorstep with a check in hand, Buffy felt a snake of cold foreboding slither through her guts to coil tightly around her spine.

“No,” she said, and started to close the door.

“Five hundred thousand,” he said.

The door stopped with barely an inch to go. Through the gap, she could see the corner of his mouth turn upward.

“For your attendance at the meeting only,” added Stafford. He talked as if he were in a corporate office, not standing on the stoop of her apartment. “Should you decide to accept our offer, Mr. Weyland is prepared to consider...other numbers.”

Buffy's grip tightened.

“Attendance only,” said Stafford, and casually held out the hand holding the check.

She knew she shouldn't.

Buffy let the door swing back open anyway.

“Where?” she asked.

Stafford smiled, and she could have choked on it.
