AUTHOR’S NOTE: This is a sequel to the fic The Second Chance. I came up with it when I was at work. I hope you enjoy.
That first night neither Miss Fred nor her gentleman would get any sleep.
Of course, this is the Nightside, where it is always past midnight, but that is not the point.
They just sat on her couch and spoke to each other for hours. Watched each other with eyes full of love and tinged with fear.
Every time I tried to get up to let them alone, they would include me in their discussion. I heard stories of Slayers and Vampires, tales of lost chances and love spanning centuries and dimensions.
Finally, I had to know. I rose out of the chair and looked at the pair across from me.
“Why don’t you both get some sleep? There’s always tomorrow for catching up,” I said as nicely as I could.
A look crossed over Miss Fred’s face that was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. Her eyes bored into mine as she spoke.
“Because if I fall asleep,” she said quietly, her voice cracking, “he might go away. Leave me alone again”
I looked at the man at her side.
“And for me this could only be a mirage or a trick of a dying mind stirred by an Old One’s one last promise.”
Miss Fred jumped off her couch and grabbed my arm. She had a surprisingly tight grip.
“Stay with us, Abe,” she asked. “Until we both fall asleep. If nothing happens, you can go. Or maybe this will be a dream, and I’ll go back to life as I’ve come to know it. It’s not a bad life, mind you, and you and Julian are very…”
“Miss Fred,” I interrupted. Before I could say anything else, she looked up at me and said a single word.
I couldn’t say no to my friend.
“Alright. Let’s make a deal. You and your mister…”
“Mister Wesley please get some sleep. I will sit here and make sure nothing will happen to you. No one will bother you this night. I promise.”
Miss Fred got on her tiptoes and kissed me on the cheek.
“Thank you,” she said, and walked back to Wesley.
She went back to the couch and whispered something in his ear. He began to smile widely and then opened his arms to her. Miss Fred got on the couch and snuggled as close to him as possible. Her eyes closed and she soon was snoring quietly. Wesley just sat there stroking her hair, murmuring words I couldn’t make out. I could see he was finally giving in to his exhaustion.
“ I thank you as well,” he whispered, and then he too was asleep.
Walking over to Miss Fred’s bookshelf, I picked out a book I could actually understand and began to read. After a while I put the book do and just watched Miss Fred and her Wesley, curled up on her couch sleeping. Something so simple, yet in a way it was among the more romantic things I’ve ever seen.
It isn’t every night that you get to witness true love in the Nightside.
