AN – Thoughts \\I am thinking.//

When Jenny arrived at school the next day, Buffy’s ‘death’ was already the topic of discussion.

Using that to take the bull by the horns, she went straight to the Library to see Giles. She hated to lie to him even more than she’d already done and she felt really bad for leaving because she knew she had been starting to feel something for him.

She found Giles standing behind the checkout desk. His face was worn and sad looking. True, she knew that he knew Buffy was alive but that did not ease the hurt of still losing his Slayer. She doubted her own departure would hurt as bad but she hoped he still might miss her somewhat.

“I just heard some students talking,” she said sympathetically. “I’m so very sorry. She was a remarkable young woman.”

Giles answered absently, “Yes. Yes, she was.”

He heaved a sigh and continued, “Thank you for your sentiment, but I’m really not good company just now.”

“I understand but I’m also here to let you know that a family emergency came up and I will be leaving Sunnydale,” she said. “I have to go take care of a recently orphaned niece.”

“Oh,” he said.

Then added sincerely, “I’m sorry for your loss.”

After a couple of moments of awkward silence, she said, “Thank you. . . . . . . Well I have to go turn in my resignation. Bye.”

“Bye,” he replies as she leaves.

\\Just as well we never got past the flirting stage,// she thought. \\It would make it so much harder to leave.//

\\Just as well she’s leaving,// thought Giles wistfully as he watched her go, unconsciously memorizing her every move. \\This town would have probably been the death of her.//

Dealing with Snyder had been a pain she could have done without. However, being able to tell him ‘Take This Job and Shove It’ then promptly leaving his office before he could form a retort had been quite satisfying.

The ensuing phone conversation with her Uncle hadn’t been pleasant either. Only when she explained Whistler’s alternative plan was she able to divert his anger from her to the meddlesome Powers and their messenger. The chance for vengeance against Darla also seemed to placate him somewhat.

He and other members of her Tribe would arrive later that evening to discuss things in person.

If Whistler showed up for the meeting like he’d promised, she hoped her Uncle didn’t do anything rash. The fact that the Powers were taking what for them would be considered a more active role in the affairs of mankind meant that doing anything that might be construed as interfering with their purpose could result in extremely bad things happening to the one who did that.

The meeting took place at her apartment as there would be less tension if Angel and the members of her Tribe were kept as far apart as possible. Not that there wasn’t tension enough already but keeping a potential flash point out of the way was a good thing.

Jenny explained what had happened and what Whistler had already told her then called out for him to appear as they’d agreed.

However, instead of manifesting in the room there was a knock on the door. When she looked through the peep hole she saw Whistler just like the first time.

When she opened the door, instead of entering he said in a steely voice, “Tell them to take down the wards and behave themselves unless they want pieces of Angelus’ demon shoved into their bodies before they’re sent to Hell.”

Jenny was shocked and turned to face the others, who she knew had heard Whistler’s command.

Her Uncle and several others looked furiously at the Balance Demon.

“You dare . . . . .” started her Uncle.

“Silence!” ordered Whistler and her Uncle’s voice was heard no more.

“You are not dealing with your run-of-the-mill situation here,” said Whistler with anger, still outside the door. “You are not the ones in control and the sooner you get that through your thick skulls the sooner we can get down to business. Now cancel the wards!”

Several moments passed before Enyos nodded his head and three of the others muttered cancelation spells.

Whistler stayed where he was and tapped his foot.

“All. Of. Them.”

Enyos, who found his voice was back, and the rest reluctantly did their cancelation spells.

Whistler scanned the room thoroughly before crossing the threshold.

“Good. Remember, you are involved as a courtesy because you can be useful to the Powers’ plan. But you are not the only game in town that can fill that role. Continue to play nice and your vengeance against Angelus and Darla will be completely fulfilled. Otherwise it will be you and your descendents that end up suffering from sharing a body with bits and pieces of their demons while they reap the benefits of being demon free. And there won’t be any dumb escape clause for you either.”

A still angry, but less defiant Enyos said, “Janna has told us of your plan for dealing with Darla but what of Angelus? Janna only said you would guarantee his continued suffering. How will you do that?”

“The original curse could be broken if he experienced a single moment of pure happiness,” said Whistler, “which had to occur in conjunction with a willing blood sacrifice. The Powers have altered that a bit by requiring the willing blood sacrifice to come from a specific person through a specific act. The Powers will see to it that the specific act can no longer be accomplished. Therefore, the curse can never be broken even if he momentarily feels good about something. That feeling will never last long and will even make him suffer more as he is reminded of what will always be a fleeting condition. So you will no longer have to monitor him to ensure your vengeance continues. Instead of being the focus of your Tribe’s existence, he can be delegated to insignificance. Of less concern to you than an ant you might accidentally step on.”

“And all you have to do in return is use a favor owed your Tribe by a certain individual to help set up the Slayer and your niece as her guardian with new identities away from the Hellmouth and most other supernatural hot spots,” he concluded.

Jenny looked at her Uncle as he mulled over the Balance Demon’s proposal.

While, in her opinion, it would be good to not have to worry about Angel anymore, she suddenly realized just how much of her Tribe’s purpose revolved around the souled vampire. What could they possibly replace that with? It was scary and liberating at the same time.

“The Kalderash agree,” her Uncle finally said.

Whistler doffed his hat and disappeared.

Angel had been appalled when Jenny told him what was to become of Darla. He was even more appalled when she told him what his part in her tribe’s vengeance against her would be. She explained that it was part of his penance that he be the one to do it. Members of the Kalderash would handle the aftermath but his was to be the hand that did the deed. He couldn’t remember Angelus ever being this cruel. Not even in his torment of Drusilla.

Now it was time to carry out that plan.

Darla’s body had been taken from Buffy’s casket just before it was to be cremated and brought to this old warehouse.

From the look Angel saw in Jenny’s Uncle Enyos’ eyes, the Gypsy Elder was considering applying that vengeance against him even though Janna had told the assembled Elders that the Powers wanted him to help the new Hellmouth Guardian. Refusing to do the task assigned him would undoubtedly prompt the man to risk the Powers ire for interfering with that aim.

He reluctantly accepted the bone saw.

Darla finally returned from the oblivion she’d entered when struck down just before blasting the Slayer to hell but found she was still in total darkness. She also found she couldn’t move and was unable to speak or even make a sound. Fear and anger caused her to shift into her game face.

Suddenly there was a voice in the darkness.

“Hear your fate you foul creature,” said a woman’s hate-filled voice. “You have been condemned to an eternity of solitude and torment. You will have discovered that you are mute. This is because your tongue and larynx have been removed and buried. Your lungs are no longer connected to your mouth either. You will have also found that your movement is highly curtailed, if not impossible. Your arms, legs, and lower torso have been severed from your upper body so that you consist of only your head and chest. All of those parts have been buried separately in various locations and will slowly rot away. A simple spell has been cast that will allow you to ‘feel’ the decaying process as it affects them. Only this part of you will remain when all is said and done. Though you won’t rot away, this portion of your body will still suffer from the hunger pangs of not being able to feed as well as the other physical effects of starvation. The soil around each of your buried parts has been consecrated as I’m sure you can tell if you reach out with your senses. Though it is highly unlikely, even if you or your parts are found, the moment the found coffin is opened that part will be engulfed in unquenchable flames. Your eyes have been left with you so you can see that should it happen. Thus is the vengeance of the Kalderash!”

Darla had reverted to her human visage during the woman’s speech, stunned at what she was hearing. It was a short time after the speech ended that she stopped being stunned and again vamped out in rage.

The voice returned and the speech repeated itself, and kept repeating for as long as Darla held her vampire face.

Thus began Darla’s descent into madness, though she did not know that another spell had been cast that would not let her forget who she was and what was happening to her so that even madness could not provide an escape from her personal hell.

AN: Like others before me, I thought it strange that Angel’s one moment of happiness involved sex. Then it hit me, Buffy was a virgin and it was her willing sacrifice of her virginity that allowed that one moment of joy to come about. Angelus was able to come out at other times of joy because Angel believed that was all it took and failed to maintain control over the demon (the soul didn’t leave, Angelus just was dominant at those times). Self fulfilling prophecy: You are told something will happen and you then proceed to allow it to happen to the extent that you actually make it happen.

AN: Darla’s punishment was inspired by ‘The Judge’, Connors dumping of Angel into the ocean, and Dana’s severing of Spike’s hands.
