AN – Thoughts \\I am thinking.//

Finally, closing his eyes and rubbing the bridge of his nose, he said resignedly, “I should’ve known.”

“One more thing before you get started,” said Whistler, interrupting Xander’s lament. “You can’t let anyone know that you’re back or that it is you that is providing the Slayer upgrade to the Potential. The Potential herself will only know that her powers come from a spirit, but she won’t be able to identify who you are. This will make it more difficult to exorcise you if anyone does figure out how she got her powers.”

“What about Giles?” asked Xander. “He’s going to be concerned about training a Slayer who isn’t all the time.”

“She will have to make the Watcher aware that she is not a full-time Slayer but that she has to summon her powers and it is not always instantaneous. Because the Council will only end up making things worse if they knew, all his reports will indicate that he finally convinced Blondie to cut all ties to family and friends in order to protect them and that she will now operate in secret. Her death has already been faked to facilitate being able to get her away from The Hellmouth while the new Guardian makes it seem she is still here doing her job. Therefore, as long as you’re able to keep a lid on things those that don’t need to know the truth will never know the difference.”

“Wait a minute!” shouted Xander. “What do you mean ‘her death has already been faked’?”

“Just what I said,” replied Whistler calmly. “Only the Watcher and Angel know she’s not dead. To your friend Willow, the Slayer’s mother, and everyone else it appears she was shot by a jealous rival, though Willow knows that the rival was really Darla, Angel’s sire.”

“I can’t believe you’re putting Willow and Mrs. S through that kind of heartache!” said Xander as he got in the Balance Demon’s face.

“Look,” said Whistler, using magic to push the irate teen away and hold him there, not really wanting to be roughed up again. “The Slayer’s mother was attacked by Darla and almost killed. Something had to be done to keep her from continuing to be a potential target and thus distracting the Slayer. She would not be able to cope with her daughter’s calling as having Blondie committed the last time she tried to tell her parents about vampires proved. Therefore, she couldn’t accompany the Slayer when she left town. For her own safety faking the Slayer’s death was the only option left.”

“As for your friend, I told you before she was letting her grief over your death keep her from truly forgiving Buffy for accidentally killing you and was even starting to think that she was to blame for Jesse’s death as well. For her to believe Blondie is dead gives her a type of closure and prevents her resentment over yours and Jesse’s deaths from growing into real hatred towards her.”

“Willow wouldn’t do that!”

“The way she was behaving it was a good possibility,” said Whistler. “Your friend is basically a good kid but lets her emotions overrule her smarts. She sees what happened as a betrayal by the first girl friend she’s ever had, with the cost being her only other friends. Willow is too focused on her own pain to even acknowledge someone else’s. She has failed to see that Buffy’s guilt and remorse is so deep that she has been having trouble coming up with the motivation to win against even fledglings. That is part of the reason the Powers are certain the Slayer will die if not removed from the Hellmouth. Neither of them can move forward with Buffy in Sunnydale and Willow won’t move beyond her festering anger while Buffy lives and you don’t. This solution actually helps them both, despite the pain to all involved.”

Xander seethed but decided to not push the subject just now.

“Now back to the task at hand,” Whistler continued. “After your first possession of the Potential, she will be able to summon you if the need arises and you are not already nearby. However, as I pointed out earlier, you can’t just teleport to where she is when this happens and it will take time for you to reach her which will depend on how far away from her you are. So you might not want to stray too far a field from where she’s at, especially at night.”

The two incorporeal beings continued to hover over the quad.

After several moments, Whistler said, “Well? What are you waiting for?”

“She’s not alone,” said Xander. “According to you this possession thing gives me complete control of her body and minimal access to her thoughts without a deeper probe. Therefore it would be best to do this when she’s alone to avoid embarrassing moments where I’m not aware of what’s going on at the time. Plus I just realized that we’re talking about me possessing someone of the opposite sex. That’s a difficult concept to deal with. I’ve been told in the past that I was barely functional as a male.”

“Well you better get to it soon,” said Whistler. “You don’t have a lot of time to waste getting her up to speed and on the job. The Slayer is no longer available to protect the Hellmouth and Angel can only keep a lid on things for so long by himself.”

\\Just great,// mused Xander. \\I get to work with Deadboy. The perks of this gig just keep getting better and better.//

About that time the girls in the courtyard began heading into the school in groups of 2 or 3. Except for one who went in a different direction on her own.

“Well, Miss Hale,” muttered Xander as he began to follow the lone figure. “I really hate doing this to you but I don’t have much choice.”

Whistler watched Xander and the girl disappear into the school and shook his head.

\\His brain must still be addled from being brought back,// he mused. \\Her last name’s not Hale.//
