AN – Mental communication *Who are you?*

AN – Thoughts \\I am thinking.//

At Giles puzzled stare, he/she continued, “I believe you were expecting me. I’m the Hellmouth’s new Guardian.”

“I’m Aura, the Vampire Slayer.”

Giles stared at the young black woman before him as her statement registered fully on his mind. At the mention of her name, he remembered her to be a student at the school and one of Cordelia’s clique.

“How?” he asked with a bit of confusion.

“Apparently I’m what’s known as a Potential,” he/she replied. “As it’s been explained to me, I am able to summon the Essence of the Slayer to empower me. This means that I will not have full Slayer capabilities all the time. That, along with the fact that I know that I’m supposed to make it look like the Real Slayer is still in Sunnydale, means that I will need to be more circumspect than Buffy was.”

Snapping out of his shock, Giles said, “You seem to be taking this situation fairly calmly.”

“I am currently possessed by the Essence of the Slayer and the knowledge It shared with me has managed to temper my freak out upon first learning about vampires and other monsters being real. I can only hope to remain this calm when I’m just me again.”

“Is there some sort of time limit for you to retain the Essence?” he asked a bit worriedly for the young woman’s mental stability.

He/She looked thoughtful for a moment before saying, “I’m not aware of one but not having to worry about watching out for inadvertent demonstrations of strength during normal activities would assist in keeping my identity a secret. Therefore, I would probably only summon the Essence for training and patrols.”

“That being the case, it might be a good idea for you to revert to just yourself while I’m present to assist you should you have trouble dealing with your new knowledge when not possessed by the Essence,” suggested Giles.

He/She replied, “Thanks. It would really be appreciated to not have to try that when I’m alone.”

He/She stepped further into the office and shut the door. He/She then sat in the guest chair next to the desk.

“OK. Here goes.”

That said, Xander found himself back in the mental landscape where he’d encountered Aura’s psyche. He instinctively knew he had to concentrate on separating her psyche from their merged entity. Slowly he felt her become separated from him until he saw her standing in front of him.

*I’m going to leave you now,* he said. *But I won’t be far if you need me. Giles will also help you deal.*

*OK,* she replied a bit dazedly.

Xander then found himself hovering over Aura and Giles.

Giles watched as the young woman closed her eyes and then seemed to go rigid for a moment before relaxing. However, her eyes remained closed.

After a few moments, Giles noticed tears forming at the corners of her eyes.

“Are you alright?” he asked with concern in his voice.

“No,” was her soft reply.

Before he could think of anything to say, she was out of her seat and onto his lap. She threw her arms around his neck and pressed her face into his chest as she cried uncontrollably.

Intermingled with her sobs he heard her saying over and over again, “I don’t want to die. I don’t want to die.”

While trying to think of something to say, as well as someway to judiciously remove the distraught teenager from his person, Giles hoped that no one would drop by and see his current predicament in that it would probably result in his being fired and possibly jailed. The sudden flash of memory of less clothing encumbered Olivia in a similar position on his lap but for an entirely different reason was something that Giles definitely did not need at that moment. Especially since Aura’s outfit was far from being on the modest side to begin with.

Lucky for Giles, Murphy was too busy with someone else to arrange for Snyder, or anyone else to pop into the library and catch him ‘in flagrante delicto’.

Xander, on the other hand, had at least some if not all of Murphy’s attention, as he berated himself for being the cause of Aura’s emotional breakdown. He had not detected the possibility of it occurring prior to his departure from her mind even though he had checked to ensure she wouldn’t have a mental breakdown.

He considered merging back with her to calm her down again but reasoned that would only delay what was happening. Instead he would let Giles deal with it as he’d proposed when he suggested they separate while he was there. He would just have to hang around and wait to see if he was needed.

After a few minutes of viewing the tableau below him, Xander realized what it might look like to someone finding them like that. Therefore, during the eighteen minutes it took for Giles to soothe Aura enough to return to her own seat, he would periodically check outside the office for unexpected visitors with the intention of remerging with her if the need arose to in order to present a less compromising scene.

Giles asked her a few questions about her current physical conditioning routine. Since she was on the cheerleading squad, it mostly revolved around simple exercises, stretches and whatever routines they were learning. Though he had frowned upon such activities when Buffy had tried out for the team, given that Aura wouldn’t always have Slayer strength to depend on, he saw no reason for her to alter that regimen. He did suggest some additional exercises to improve the development of her stamina.

Before the start of the next period, he gave her an excuse slip for missing her geography class and told her to rest that night.

“You should drop by tomorrow sometime and we can discuss a training schedule,” he said as she prepared to head off to her next class.
“Try not to worry. I won’t ask you to patrol until I’ve taught you what you need to know and will accompany you until I believe you can do so on your own. Also, since you won’t be empowered most of the time, demons and vampires shouldn’t be able to target like they might a full time Slayer. Just remember to never go out alone at night when the Essence isn’t with you. Also, remember that your being the Slayer needs to be a secret as this will protect you as well.”

“OK,” was her subdued reply as she departed his office.

Invisibly, Xander followed her as she slowly made her way to her next class. He felt like shit and wondered if he’d made the right decision. He resolved to stick close to her for the rest of the day to be ready to help her should she show signs of not dealing.

Apparently Murphy wasn’t done with him yet as he was presented with a new dilemma. Her next class was gym and that meant in order to stick close to her he would possibly be seeing her, and several other girls, in various stages of undress or he could wait outside the locker room and respect their privacy.

\\Sometimes being the good guy sucks,// he thought.
