AN – Thoughts \\I am thinking.//
Approaching the desk, Aura quietly said, “Mr. Giles, I just realized there may be a small problem with me being The Slayer, even on a part time basis.”
“Oh. What pray tell is the problem?”
“I’m not certain I can keep it a secret from the person I’m involved with,” she replied.
“Oh. I see. Exactly how involved are you?”
“We’re not dating. More of a ‘friends with benefits’ relationship. It started out with mutual massages to relieve stress and progressed from there. There are feelings of love and respect present but we’re not ‘in love’ with each other.”
“Yes. Quite. Buffy had similar problems trying to have a normal relationship with the . . uh . . boys here at school.”
“That’s part of the reason we’re not dating each other,” said Aura looking down. “It’s not a boy I’m involved with. It’s another girl.”
Giles was stunned speechless.
Being incorporeal, Xander was just stunned. He hadn’t picked up any such information during the times he’d been joined with Aura. Of course, he hadn’t been looking either as he wanted to let her keep as much privacy as possible given their situation. While he was certain he might learn things to explain female behavior better, there were also things he was sure he never wanted to know about either.
Finally able to speak again, Giles asked, “How do you think she would take it if you tell her?”
“I’m not sure,” replied Aura. “Looking back on things, I know she was directly involved in some weird happenings lately and knowing the truth might be welcome instead of the half-baked rationalizations that have been given. I’m also concerned for her safety. If I tell her and she doesn’t freak out, she might want to get involved and considering that Jesse and Xander were hanging out with Buffy shortly before they disappeared or died, I’m not sure I would want her to be.”
“Yes,” he said. “This is a dangerous situation and while Jesse was a random victim and didn’t know that Buffy was the Slayer until after he’d been turned, Xander and Willow both insisted they help out as best they could once they discovered her secret. Xander, himself, was a random victim but one of Buffy’s enemies did target her mother, so your concern is warranted to some extent. Though, as we are going to attempt to keep your identity secret, that might not be much of a problem. However, I am of the opinion that if you wish her to know, it might at least improve her chances of survival whether she decides to help out or not. It’s just a matter of how you believe she will react. You do not want to be labeled as insane or have her tell everyone and blow your cover which will also endanger Buffy and the mission The Powers have her on.”
“You mentioned Willow was helping,” said Aura. “Will she continue to help out?”
“For some reason that has not been explained to me, The Powers don’t want Willow to know Buffy is still alive. As such, your status as only being the Slayer part time would have to be kept secret which would be quite difficult to maintain given the closeness involved by being such a small group. Therefore, I am reluctant to allow her to continue, though her help at research was most welcome. I was planning on suggesting to her parents, when they arrive tomorrow, that they move her to another school in another city. With Xander, Buffy, and Jesse gone she really doesn’t have any close friends left here. Given time, I suppose Amy might renew the friendship they had when they were younger but I believe Willow’s painful memories will take longer to fade if she stays even with Amy’s friendship.”
“Do you think your friend would be able to help out with using the computer for research purposes?” he asked.
“Not likely,” replied Aura. “She can deal with chat rooms and not much else.”
“Well, under those circumstances, it is up to you whether you desire to tell her your secret,” said Giles. “If you believe she will be able to provide you with the emotional support your calling will entail, even if she doesn’t get actively involved, then I suggest you do tell her. Buffy once told me that having Xander and Willow know about her being the Slayer and still being her friends gave her something concrete to be fighting for. As well as something to live for. Both motivators that will stand you in good stead.”
The warning bell sounded and Aura got up to head for her first class but stopped before she got to the Library doors.
Turning back towards Giles, she said, “You didn’t ask who I’m involved with.”
“I consider that your private concern until such time as you choose to divulge it to me,” he said. “Though I expect the courtesy of a heads up should you decide to tell her as I may need to help you prove you’re not crazy.”
“Actually, I believe the fact that I’m going along with all this proves that I am,” she said as she left for class.
After a moment of silent contemplation, Giles said to an empty room, “Using that criteria, then so am I.”
Xander floated along behind Aura as she made her way to class.
\\How in hell did I miss that little tidbit when I merged with her? I mean, sure I wasn’t trying to delve into her thoughts more than absolutely necessary but something like that should have had neon signs blazing around it. A member of the Elite in a girl/girl relationship. That’s major. I’ll have to add that to the list of things we need to work out between us. I mean unless she decides to end the relationship, I’m sure she’ll have some ground rules she’ll want me to abide by. Especially since she knows I’m a guy and this situation is high up on The Guy’s Most Viewed Fantasies list.//
\\Man, this sucks. Here I am, dead, doing a favor for The Powers That Be, and Murphy is still messing with me. I hope that wherever Buffy is she’s doing better than I am.//
Not really wanting to sit through a class he’d found boring while alive, Xander went to find Willow. Though his mind had been focused on Aura’s revelation, he had noted Giles’ plans to get Willow out of Sunnydale.
He was of two minds on that. One, he agreed with Giles’ assessment that if she stayed it would take longer to come to terms with the deaths of all her close friends. It would also potentially endanger Aura’s safety. Willow might also be safer away from the Hellmouth.
On the other hand, all of his friends would be gone if she left. True, he was a ghost and she wouldn’t know he was around but he would know she was, and that would have been enough for him.
\\I suppose I should be working on being Aura’s friend,// mused Xander. \\If our unique relationship is to work out, we need to be comfortable with and trust each other. I just wish I knew how long the charade is supposed to last. It would be nice to let Aura know that this situation wasn’t going to be a life time commitment.//
Willow was in computer class, which was being taught by some guy he only sort of recognized.
Looking at the whiteboard, he saw the name ‘Warren Mears’ written on it.
\\I think he’s a senior,// thought Xander.
He could see that Willow was sad and moping. She’d normally have more than one window open at a time and be zipping between them doing whatever it was she normally did. Today, she only had the screen with her homework displayed and she was just sitting with her hands in her lap.
\\Yeh. Willow needs to leave Sunnydale if she’s to deal with her issues properly,// he thought. \\I just hope it’ll be somewhere where she can make friends and be safe. ‘Course, most any place would be safer than Sunnydale.//
When the bell rang signaling the end of class, most everyone bolted for the door. Willow lagged behind a bit and so did Xander.
She left the classroom and made a stop at the girl’s restroom, so Xander hovered around outside the door and noticed Aura walking down the hall.
Suddenly, the door to the janitor’s closet opened and an arm grabbed Aura, yanking her inside and the door closing behind her.
Quickly, Xander flew into the closet, preparing to jump into Aura’s body and wreak havoc on whomever it was that had attacked her.
The scene that greeted him though was not one of attack. At least not of the kind he expected.
Aura was being given a lingual probe of her tonsils as far as he could tell. And quite possibly was reciprocating with vigor.
Aura was pressed up against the wall of the closet and her assailant had both hands sensually mauling Aura’s breasts. Aura’s hands were also busy kneading her assailant’s ass cheeks.
Xander had no idea how long he had gawked at the scene in front of him, but his next conscious recollection was when their lips broke apart and Aura’s assailant breathlessly said, “I missed you at the Bronze last night.”
Finally recognizing who it was Aura was making out with, Xander could only gape incredulously.
“I received some disturbing news yesterday and needed to get my head together,” replied Aura before initiating another long passionate kiss.
“I have some things to do after school but I promise to stop by your place later this evening,” said Aura when their kiss broke again.
“OK. Best get to class, then.”
The two young women then surreptitiously left the closet. Unknowingly, leaving a still stunned ghost behind.
Finally shaking himself from his stupor, Xander concluded that Murphy was a cat and he, Xander, was his current favorite mouse to play with. What other explanation could there be for Aura’s ‘friend with benefits’ just happened to be . . . . . . .
AN: I not sure if it is canon or not but I always got the impression that Warren was a year or two ahead of the Scoobies. This would make him a more ideal candidate, at this point in time, than Willow to teach the computer class on a temporary basis given his obvious programming skills.
