Summary: Buffy hesitates.

------------------------------------------------------

He was floating.

That’s about all he could detect of his surroundings due to the endless whiteness around him. Even then, he couldn’t tell what he was floating on since there was no sensation other than the movement itself.

It was peaceful as well.

Peaceful to the extent that he wasn’t even concerned about where he was or why. It just seemed . . . . . right, somehow.

There was, however, a small part of him that was saying he should be asking questions. Another part pointed out that there was no one to ask and he knew he didn’t have the answers so there was no point.

It took several moments for him to become aware that his drifting had ceased and though the surrounding whiteness was still present even it had changed somehow. His next awareness was that he had a body and was standing on a hard flat surface though it continued to look the same as any other direction he looked in.

The lethargy that had wrapped his mind was seeping away but he was still not worried. He somehow knew his unasked questions would be answered, along with other questions he hadn’t even thought to ask.

Finally, after a moment or an eternity, he really couldn’t tell, a garish splash of color appeared in front of him. It was enough to make him blink several times before he could focus on it without squinting.

“Sorry to interrupt your journey but something’s come up,” said the man in the leather jacket and way too bright shirt.

“Who are you? Where are we? What’s going on?”

“Name’s Whistler,” said the man. “And if you’ll give it a few more moments, you’ll be getting your complete set of memories back.”

“Huh?”

“You were on your way to Heaven to spend eternity in perfect peace and joy. Having memories of anything bad would be counter-productive to that end so they’re removed and you’re left with only good thoughts,” explained the man.

He could tell it was true somehow and made some sense but was still a little unsettled to know his memory had been tampered with. However, he just nodded his understanding as some memories of happy times in his childhood flitted through his mind.

“If I was on my way to Heaven that means I’m dead doesn’t it?” he asked calmly.

“Uh . . . yah,” was the hesitant reply.

“Not to worry though,” the man added quickly. “You’ll get to complete your journey after you help clear up a little matter back on Earth. It’ll be easier to explain once you’ve got back most of your memories. It takes some time to reverse the effects of the conditioning that was preparing you for entering Heaven.”

The two of them just stood there quietly.

Whistler, apparently waiting for when he could begin to explain what he needed to say. He, himself, dealing with the return of memories that were not always pleasant.

“Just remember, it wasn’t you,” said Whistler, suddenly.

“Huh?” he asked just before his eyes went wide and his face was filled with horror. He staggered around as though reeling from a punch.

“Oh God! Oh God!! Oh God!!!,” he moaned. “I . . . . I . . . I r.....”

“No you didn’t!” shouted Whistler as he grabbed him by the shoulders. “I told you, it wasn’t you!”
