Joe/Xander decided not to have Aura mention Willy’s directly to Giles as there was no way of explaining how she would know of such a place. Therefore, he got Aura to ask Giles about whether or not he knew of any places in town where vamps and demons might congregate to relax. A neutral ground where they might let their hair, tentacles, or whatever down and gossip, brag, or bemoan about their life and/or job. A place that if bugged could become a good source of information about any pending evilness.
Giles said that he didn’t know of any such place himself but that such places did tend to exist where large numbers of demons and vampires could be found so there might be at least one in Sunnydale. He’d ask Angel to check it out if he already didn’t know about one.
“I doubt we’d be able to bug such a place, even with Angel’s help,” said Giles. “Such places are normally heavily warded in order to assure their cliental of their safety. However, even without being able to gather information about any schemes they’re involved with, just knowing which demons and vampires frequent such an establishment would allow me to train you better to meet the threat they pose should you have to fight them. I should have thought about that before. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.”
Aura blushed a bit at the praise, embarrassed that it was directed to her and really belonged to Joe who was currently merged with her but leaving her in control as she did some training exercises in the Library during her free period.
As for Joe/Xander, he wasn’t really paying attention to what Aura was doing. He was in a funk over Willow’s departure from Sunnydale. Luckily, with Aura in charge, he had nothing to do anyway and could focus all his thoughts on wallowing at the loss of his childhood friend.
Jonathan Levinson was sitting on one of the outdoor benches eating his lunch when a shadow fell over him.
He looked up as the figure causing the shadow asked, “How much of a geek are you?”
“Huh?” was his shocked reply.
“I know you’re into computers and I’ve heard you talk about some TV show called ‘Babbling 5’ or some such thing, so I want to know how much more of a geek you are. What other geeky things are you into?”
Jonathan was at a loss as to how to answer. It didn’t look like she was trying to set him up for some humiliation as there were no jocks, cheerleaders, or other popular kids nearby to hear her question or his answer, if he could think of how to answer the odd question that is.
When she started tapping her foot, he finally squeaked out, “Well I like other sci fi shows and movies. I enjoy role playing games involving sword and sorcery . . . .”
“Good,” she interrupted. “Let’s go to the Library.”
She then turned away and started to walk towards the courtyard entrance to the school.
She was over halfway there when his brain finally informed him that he’d been given an order and failure to comply could lead to very unpleasant things happening to him. He quickly gathered up his things and raced to catch up, arriving next to her just as she reached the door.
She stood and glowered at him for a few moments until he realized she was waiting for him to open the door, which he did a bit awkwardly given the stuff he had in his hands.
Once inside they made their way to the Library with him just a step behind her and to her right. As they approached the Library doors he rushed ahead and opened them such that she didn’t even have to reduce her pace to enter.
Giles, who was behind the counter, looked up when the doors opened and he saw two students enter.
Before he could greet them and ask what they needed, the young woman said, “Here’s your new geek.”
“I beg your pardon?” Giles replied questioningly.
“Aura said you needed a geek to help with research, so I brought you one,” she replied. “With the things he’s into the truth shouldn’t freak him out too much. So fill him in and put him to work. I’d stay but I’ve got to meet with Joy about some new cheer routines.”
With that she turned and left the Library, leaving two stunned males in her wake.
After several awkward moments of silence, Jonathan meekly asked, “What truth was she talking about?”
Giles removed his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose before he said with a heavy sigh, “Why don’t you take a seat at the table and tell me about yourself. Then I’ll explain things to you?”
Jonathan did so and Giles moved over to the table as well where he reluctantly began his ‘The World is older than you know’ speech to his new, and obviously drafted, research assistant. All the while he kept his wonder at the possible identity of Aura’s ‘friend with benefits’ from boggling his mind too much.
\\She was definitely not on the list of those I thought Aura might have been involved with,// he mused. \\Even though I should have guessed it had to be someone in the same circle of associates as her.//
Of course his day was truly made when Snyder showed up later to inform him that he was being put in charge of the school’s annual talent show.
Angel sat in his apartment and brooded. Buffy was gone from the Hellmouth and he had to stay and help out some new girl who wasn’t even a full time Slayer. He hadn’t met her yet, or even known who she was since he hadn’t talked to Giles much since telling him of Darla’s fate.
He had been expressing his frustration and anger quite frequently with the denizens of Sunnydale’s nightlife over the past few days but tonight he just sat in the dark and mourned over what he was sure was a lost opportunity. He put his mood down to the fact that Willow was leaving and therefore another link to Buffy was leaving as well.
\\I’d almost tolerate Xander’s presence if he were still alive,// mused Angel as he belted back a mixture of blood and scotch.
Angel spent the rest of the night and most of the next day just sitting in the dark. It would have gone on longer but he was supposed to have his first sparring session with the new Hellmouth Guardian, the part time Slayer, shortly after school let out and he had to make use of the sewer and tunnels beneath Sunnydale to get there. Considering some of the things that also used those routes, he needed to be sober and on top of his game.
He was sure that if he survived long enough, he and Buffy would eventually get together again. That was what he was fighting for from now on. He would help keep the world turning only because that would mean that Buffy would continue to exist as well.
She reviewed her mental checklist, \\Get a Geek for the Librarian. Check. Convince Joy to add more physical stunts to our cheer routines to improve both our ability to inspire school spirit and our overall fitness. Check. Talk the gym teacher into adding a self-defense course for the girls. Check. That leaves getting info from the Librarian about the dangers Aura will face as well as how he intends for her to keep her identity a secret from the demons and vampires; meeting this supposedly repentant blood sucker who is supposed to help her train and fight; and making sure she still has time to be with me while dealing with the bad guys.//
Her remunerations were interrupted by the arrival of Harmony, Gwen, and Aphrodesia.
“Are you going to The Bronze tonight?” asked Harmony.
“I haven’t made up my mind yet. Daddy wants me at some private social gathering. If I get bored there I might go later in the evening.”
“Oh. OK. See you later,” said Harmony as she and the others left.
As she watched part of her flock depart, Cordelia Chase added another item to her ‘To Do’ list, \\Help Aura pick out clothes that are stylish but durable.//
