Finally making it back to the Library, Giles noted the girls were not in the main room.

This worried him until he heard noises coming from his office.

He went over and knocked, suspecting their purpose there. Considering the current mess with Snyder being involved, he was glad they had thought of it on their own as it would make selling his alibi for them easier.

“Willow. Buffy. Are you doing alright?”

Willow opened the door a crack and said quietly, “We’ll be a few minutes more.”

She looked at him with a yearning look on her face that he took to be a plea for good news.

With a heavy sigh, he said sadly, “I’m sorry.”

She only closed her eyes and nodded sadly.

“Please let me know when you’re ready because unfortunately other things have happened that I need you both to be aware of,” he said.

Again she just nodded and closed the door.

It was a couple more minutes before they exited the office.

Giles was at the checkout counter sorting returned books so they could be placed back on the shelves properly. When he heard them coming out, he left his busy work and followed them to the research table.

Once they were settled he began, “Kyle and his group have been blamed for Xander’s death by Vice-principle Snyder.”

Before the two girls could react, he hurriedly continued, “He discovered them in the room where Xander was and they were covered in blood, though he didn’t realize that it wasn’t Xander’s. He therefore jumped to the wrong conclusion. It does simplify our problem somewhat.”

“Giles,” said Buffy with a bit of effort, but still with conviction. “We can’t let them take the blame for what I did.”

“Normally I’d agree but while they may be innocent of causing Xander’s death, they aren’t for Principle Flutie’s,” he said startling both young women. “Apparently while you were with Xander, the rest of them were attacking Principle Flutie and they tore him limb from limb. The possession has progressed too far for them to be returned to their former selves and their actions have garnered the attention of the authorities to the extent that we have no way to try and help them without endangering ourselves.”

“But how can the police handle them?” asked Willow.

“The possession does augment their strength and speed but not beyond what normal law enforcement officers acting in concert can’t handle. However, I do see a problem with how they will be treated after they are captured. The most probable scenario would have them confined to a sanitarium for the rest of their lives. The best we might do is locate some spells that might make them less of a threat to those around them but their psyches have been too warped by the possession, as evidenced by their attack on Principle Flutie, for them to be restored to totally human. The animal will always be with them.”

Buffy didn’t like Giles’ explanation but was unable to come up with any alternatives. Kyle, Rhonda, Tor, and Heidi were bullies, sure, but that didn’t mean they deserved to be turned into animals either.

Giles then told them the story he had given Snyder about where they were when Xander was killed. Buffy looked like she wanted to protest but after a brief moment just nodded her head sadly in agreement.

Willow had no problem going along since it coincided with her desires not to have Xander’s name tarnished by events beyond his control and in her particular case it was true. The fact that she partially blamed Kyle and the others for what happened to Xander also made acceptance of Giles’ plan easier. Buffy was at least showing genuine remorse over what happened, she knew they wouldn’t have cared one way or the other.
