Chapter 1

It was most definitely a dark night. Xander peered out of his windshield into the inky black ahead of him on interstate 76. The Wreckers were playing over his stereo as he drove and he hummed along to the tune. Ah good old Country music... music of pain and broken hearted lovers everywhere. Sighing he rubbed his good eye with the back of his hand.

Giles had surprised him when he had asked Xander of all people to help with the search for new slayers. It had been something the Buffster had been adamant about. Xander had been her rock, her entirely human friend had more emotional strength than the rest of the Scoobies put together. She firmly believed he was the right person to explain things to these girls, girls who had had normal lives. Cheerleaders, ball players, geeks, nerds, rich, poor... it didn’t matter. Xander had the knack, a way of making people feel stronger inside.

So here he was. Traveling from Denver, where he had found the last girl, sent on his way to Nebraska by two hunters. That had been a shock as well. To find out that there were other people out there, humans who risked their lives daily in the same fight as he and like himself, had no super powers to rely on.

He had gotten on well with Sam and Dean. The brother’s had been much on the same wavelength as him. They had been following the new slayer around expecting he to be some sort of demon. Well, who could blame them? A young fourteen year old girl who could throw a man clear across a road. It was suspicious. Xander had followed them back to their motel room and then to the nearest bar, where he had approached and begun to explain about slayers and where he came into it all.
Xander had gone on to explain about the types of demons and vampires they had faced. Although Sam and Dean had been surprised to hear that the demons and vampires had different qualities to those that they had fought, they saw no reason to disbelieve him. Dean had interrogated Xander to the point where he had run out of questions, yet the man had answered them all without even a blink.

Sam’s reaction had been nothing more than a raised eyebrow and then acceptance as he drank his way through a couple of beers. He had then excused himself back to the motel and left Dean and Xander to their drinks.

“So Dude, why’d you join the fight? I mean there must have been a reason. There always is.” He took a good swallow of his beer and played with the neck of the bottle.

Xander took a deep breath, “We first met Buffy when we were 15, there were three of us, Willow, Jesse and me. Jesse was taken by a vamp called she-bitch, long story... anyway, she turned him. Couple a nights later we were out at the bronze and he turned up. I dusted him. We had been friends forever and I just dusted him, just like that. After that Willow and I just kinda fell in. How could we not, knowing what was out there? Since then we have fought in numerous apocalypses, hell gods, The Master, Angelus, the USA government and believe it or not, The First Evil. We lost a few...” Xander swallowed hard. Anya’s loss still hurt. It probably always would...”But it was the right thing to do.”

Dean looked at the guy across from him with a new found respect. This guy had been to hell and back and done it just for his friend. He had scars from his battles, that was obvious from the eye patch he wore. The one he fiddled with as he spoke about The First Evil.

“What about you? Why are you in?” Xander leaned back in his chair and scratched his stomach. “If everyone has a story, what’s yours?”

As Dean explained how he and Sam had come into hunting, Xander’s eye had widened until Dean thought it might pop out of his head. Dean had been doing this almost all of his life and had managed to keep his brother alive into the bargain.

Xander’s cell phone began to ring and he excused himself to answer it. Stepping outside into the cool night air, he flipped open his phone with a “Hey G-Man”. On the other end of the phone Giles heaved a huge sigh and said for the umpteenth time,

“Xander, I do believe I have asked you many, many times over the years we have known each other to not call me that infernal name. Is it ever likely to happen?”

“Nah, probably not, not unless hell is unleashed on earth anytime soon!” Xander replied with a laugh. “The Buffster’s gonna kill me for that one, isn’t she?”

“Be that as it may, I did have a purpose in calling you. Have you retrieved the new slayer yet?”

Now it was Xander’s turn to sigh, “Yes Giles. I have also spoken to Heather’s parents and convinced them to bring her over to England to meet you before they decide what to do. The girl is only fourteen, yet she’s so strong. I saw her throw a vamp clear across a road and that’s with no training!”

“Good Lord. I hope they arrive soon. It sounds like this erm... Heather you say? Yes it sounds like she would be a perfect addition to our group. I would like for you to carry on in your search Xander. Our seer has found a girl in Nebraska, but she cannot pinpoint a location. Would you be prepared to....”

“Sure, whatever keeps me useful. Oh and Giles I have a question for you too? Have you heard of hunters? More specifically, Sam and Dean Winchester? Apparently it’s mostly spirits, but the vampires these guys have faced don’t dust. They have no allergy to the sun and staking doesn’t work. Oh and the demons, apparently they are just kinda like clouds that possess people. They actually come up from Hell.”

“that definitely sounds like it merits some research. I’ll look into it. Must go now, I am expecting company for tea. Take care Xander.”

“See ya G-man.” Xander flipped his phone closed and made his way back into the bar to continue his drink.

End Flashback

Before the end of the night, Dean and Xander had become a sort of friends. They had swapped cell numbers, another contact in the never ending fight and Xander had the name of a place to start his search for the new slayer.

That was how Xander had found himself on a lonely highway still driving at 10pm, looking for a turn off that would eventually lead him to the Roadhouse.
