VI. Brotherly Concern

Disclaimer:  None of these characters belong to me.  I only lay claim on the conception of the plot idea.

Author's Note:  Thank you to everyone who straightened out that whole Riley situation.  Now I have enough background info on him to use and forget what I mentioned in my AN2 in the previous chapter.  Riley will most definitely be the canon-Riley not my AU-Riley.  In other words: RILEY'S A TA AND NOT A FELLOW FRESHMEN LIKE BUFFY & WILLOW.

Chapter Summary:  Dean got curious about this Riley fellow that he decided to check him out just to make sure that his stepsister and her best friend aren't interacting with an undercover demon...

VI.  Brotherly Concern

SAM WALKED IN ON DEAN GETTING ready to leave to go somewhere.  It was just after dinner and usually Dean wouldn't be bothering to leave the house unless he had some hot date waiting, but ever since they moved to Sunnydale his brother's libido seemed to be tamed a bit; he rarely went out and he rarely sought out members of the opposite sex.

"Where are you going?"  Sam asked.

"No where," Dean answered while he was checking himself out on the bureau mirror.

Sam cocked an eyebrow and walked to his bed.  "You're lying."

Dean stopped fiddling with his shirt and looked at his brother,  "And where would I go, huh?" he demanded.

Sam shrugged.  He sat down on his bed and watched his brother.  "Ever since Buffy and Willow told us about this guy whom they think likes Buffy, you've been on edge.  Joyce said you even finished two tubs of ice cream in a single sitting!"

"I did not," Dean denied.  "And if I did, it was because I was hungry," he justified.

Sam cocked an eyebrow and shook his head.  He didn't believe his brother one bit, and that irked Dean more.

        "Why won't you believe me?"

"Face it Dean, you're just jealous because Buffy sought my opinion more than yours," he gloated.

        "What are you talking about?"

"You're supposedly the 'big brother' of this cozy new family of ours, and yet our 'sister' chose to seek out the opinion of her 'younger' brother as opposed to her 'older' and more experienced brother," he explained then ducked away when Dean threw whatever he was able to grab first off his bureau.  It was a small gel tube and it hit the wall just by Sam's ear.

"Don't be too damn cocky," he muttered.

"I'm not," Sam insisted but couldn't wipe that cocky grin off his face.  When Dean ignored him he changed tactics.  "Look, are you going to check out this Riley person?"

Still Dean didn't answer.  That was all the answer Sam needed to confirm his suspicion.

"Dammit, Dean.  You and Buffy are just getting along, please don't do something stupid to screw this momentary truce you two have going on."

"Who says I'm gonna screw that up?"

        Sam cocked an eyebrow.

Dean glanced at his brother and was hurt at his lack of faith in him.  "Damn, Sam, where's the love, bro?"

"Sam rolled his eyes skyward and pushed himself off his bed.  "I can't let you hunt down this Riley person by yourself," he announced.

Dean stopped combing his hair and faced his younger brother.  "Are you saying what I think you're saying?"

"Yep," Sam nodded and walked to his cabinet and pulled out a zip-up hoodie.  "I'm coming with you to make sure you don't do anything stupid and cause another major disaster between you and Buffy."

"I don't need a sidekick for what I'm going to do," Dean argued.

"Too bad, you're stuck with me anyway."  Sam finished zipping his hoodie and faced his brother.  "Now, where do you propose we start searching for this Riley character?"

Dean knew this was one argument he wouldn't win, so he conceded.

"I heard Buffy talking to Willow about meeting her and Riley at the cafe by the university.  Apparently Mr. TA wants to treat our girls out for coffee and pick Willow's brains some more while hanging out with Buffy," he answered.

Sam gaped at his brother.  "You were eavesdropping on Buffy's conversation?"

"No," Dean denied.  "I just happen to overhear her end of the conversation and pieced the rest together," he grinned proudly.

Sam rolled his eyes again and shook his head.  He slipped his hands in his jeans pockets and said nothing.  Leave it to Dean to obsess about Buffy -- again.  He just hoped this time this obsession of his won't backfire on them or else World War III would ensue.
