Chapter 30

I don't the X-Men, those belong to Marvel Comics and were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was created By Joss Whedon and all the characters with the BTVS TV series are his as well.

The Thundercats were created by Ted Wolf and currently belong to Warner Brothers, at one point in time Marvel comics did do a run of the them in comics form, although DC comics do them now.

This is a piece of fan fiction. I make no claim to the characters within it and am not writing this to gain any form of profit. This is mostly done for my own amusement and I hope for the enjoyment for the handfuls of people reading it.

Chapter 30:

Xander and Todd were sitting in the shop and both were sipping coffee.

“I'll be honest with you Todd, things are going to be different for you from now on.” Xander told him after they'd gotten their food. Most of the town was still at the game, so service was good. “You're part of a growing subspecies of mankind. Those with.... unique gifts.”

“Ya don't say.” Todd said as he fidgeted.

“You okay?” Xander asked him. “You're not allergic to caffeine or something?”

“No, my legs are kind of twitchy for some reason.” Todd said.

“Your body is probably still adapting to the changes. Your scent has changed considerably. In fact you smell more than a little like a toad.”

“Really?” Todd said. “Go figure on that seeing as how I can hop like one now.”

“I know, the abilities some of us get can be pretty out there. There are a subsection whose powers are closer to things seen in nature, but they are few and far between. Your own abilities can put you far above what normal people can do, provided you learn how to use them to their fullest.” Xander told him.

“And where would I do that? Not like places like that grow on trees do they? They don't do they?” Todd asked him.

“No, but there is a place in town that is centered around helping those like us to understand their abilities and learn to utilize them for the good of all.”

“You mean help people? Why would I want to do that?” Todd asked him.

“You know that relief you felt when Scott and I interfered with Matthews?” Xander asked him.

“Yeah.” Todd said, thinking back. “Thanks for saving my ass back there.”

“Imagine that you could help others feel that same level of relief if not more. Being able to rescue someone form a third story window during a fire, things like that.”

“What be a hero? That's for chumps.” Todd snorted.

“Maybe.” Xander said with a shrug. “It's not glamorous, you'll be cursed at, yelled and people will hate you for what you are and what you do.”

“You're not helping your case here man.” Todd told him.

“But, you'll be doing the right thing.” Xander told him. “Plus, you'll be fed, clothed in the basics and have a decent roof over your head. You got that now?”

“Nah not so much.” Todd said. “I mostly go to school for the food and the chance to snag some cash.”

“I know the feeling. Least till one of the lunch ladies tried to poison the student body.” Xander said with a shudder. “Mulligan stew that day.”

“What's a Mulligan?” Todd asked him.

“Damned if I know.” Xander said with a grin. “Seriously, we'll help you out and teach you to take care of yourself. Most you have to lose is that funky odor you picked up when your mutation kicked in.”

“I stink really?” Todd said while sniffing a pit.

“You do dude. Of course to me, everyone does. Human condition.” Xander told him. “Give it a month, see how it feels. What do you say?”

“I say tip your waitress and let's get the hell out of here.” Todd told him as he downed the last of his coffee.

“Chuck we've got a problem.” Logan told him as he came into Charles office.

“What is it?” Charles asked him.

“Check out the basketball court.” Logan told him.

Xavier opened the window blinds and watched. “Both girls are progressing nicely. Capoeria is it?”

“Yeah, I've been teaching Cordelia for a month. Thing is, I haven't taught Anna anything except basic self defense.” Logan said with a hint of a growl.

“Oh dear. She's sharing her experiences with her sister then. That could be dangerous.” Charles said before probing slightly with his mind. “Interesting.” Charles muttered.

“What is it?” Logan asked him.

“Anna, she's still very much herself despite frequent contact with her sister. What she's gained from her... isn't fighting her at all. No backlash or even much internal conflict. Cordelia has voluntarily helped her.” Xavier said as he mused on the situation. “I'll talk with them in the morning. I can understand that Cordelia has experienced a great deal of things that Anna has not but Anna's powers are still not fully known. Thank you for bringing this to my attention Logan. Also, if you could greet Xander at the front door, he has company.”

Logan nodded. “New recruit?”

“Yes, trial basis for now. We'll see if we can come up with something to curb his unique scent.”

“Huh?” Logan asked him.

“His abilities mirror those of a toad, as does his scent to a point from what Xander has told me.” Xavier said with a grin.

“You're gonna owe me Chuck.” Logan told him.

“A week off after the next security upgrade is all I can offer.” Charles told him. “Things are progressing at a faster pace now.”

“Good enough.” Logan said before heading to the front door.

The next morning....

“Ohh man it's bright!” Todd whined as the light streamed in from the light curtains on his bedroom window. He rolled over and pulled the covers over his head but it was no use. He was awake.

He took the covers off and grabbed some boxers and headed to the communal showers that were set up on the boys wing of the place. He was in and out in less than ten minutes, which was a long time for him. He was going to give this good hygiene thing a shot. Those two girls he got a glimpse of at the basketball court when he got in were pretty hot after all. He headed back to his room and got some of his cleaner clothes on before wandering downstairs to find some breakfast.

He found a large number of teens and a few adults sitting around a big table that had been piled with various rolls, jams and jellies as well as selections of cold cuts, cheeses and the like.

“What kind of a breakfast is this?” Todd asked aloud.

“German.” Kurt said from where he was sitting. “You're Todd yes?”

“Yeah. I take it you guys are the ones who live here? You're all mutants too right?” Todd asked them. “Where's Xander anyways?”

“Right here Todd.” Xander said waving a hand.

“You didn't look like a blue tiger man last night.” Todd said as he sat down.

Xander concentrated and his face shifted back to 'normal'. “Better?” He asked him.

Todd nodded. “So how do I do this?” He said while gesturing to the table of food.

“You get a plate and pile it on my man.” Kurt said. “If you can't reach something, you ask for it to be passed to you. No powers at the table.”

“Why not?” Todd frowned.

“It can be distracting.” Kurt said. “In my case when I teleport I bring a little bit of sulfur gas with me, ruins the food.”

“Oh. Makes sense.” Todd said before piling on a plate full of meat and a roll or two. “Can someone pass the juice please?” He asked.

Jean handed him the pitcher.

“Thanks.” Todd said before pouring himself a glass. “I didn't know you and Summers were mutants too.”

“Part of being here is learning to control our powers. Another part of that control is to keep them in check in public.” Jean told him.

“Until recently I had to wear special glasses to keep my powers in check.” Scott told him. “Welcome to the institute by the way.”

“Yeah, so can a fella get some introductions or something?” Todd asked the table.

“Well, you know me.” Xander said. “I'm Xander. Kurt, the other blue fuzzy one is my half brother. He's the German among us and responsible for our delicious breakfast.”

Kurt waved his tail at Todd.

“Isn't there another Kurt that goes to our school?” Todd asked.

Kurt turned on his image inducer.

“Oh.” Todd said. “Neat trick.”

“It allows me to pass as a normal teenager in public.” Kurt said before biting into a roll.

“The Brunette in tan is my girlfriend Cordelia. The Brunette in green next to her is her sister Anna Marie. Both are visions of loveliness but both are more or less off limits. Especially Anna due to her mutation.” Xander said while both girls rolled their eyes.

“Why? What's the problem with her mutation?” Todd asked him.

“Her mutation can't be turned off. She can siphon energy from people.” Xander told him.

“A kiss would be worth it.” Todd muttered while Anna blushed.

“The adults at the table,” Xander continued “Are the founder of the institute, Professor Charles Xavier,” Xander said while pointed, “Followed by our Security and self defense teacher, Logan. Followed by the resident den mother and weather mistress Ororo Monroe.”

Todd nodded. “So what is you guys do here for fun?” He said after finishing his plate of food.

“Well let's see what you can do and go from there okay?” Charles asked him. “A basic medical examination followed by some physical testing.”

“Well why not. Not like we got school today.” Todd said.

“Excellent.” Xavier said with a grin.

“Increased muscle density in the legs, as well as an elongated tongue that is capable of extending close to twenty feet from the body.” Charles said as he summed up what he'd learned of Todd's enhanced physiology. “Your digestive system appears to have altered slightly and you've found yourself catching insects right?”

Todd nodded.

“We'll if it's a dietary need I suppose we could supply you with some crickets from a pet store or something if you don't mind. It is a touch disconcerting to watch you eat flies.” Charles told him.

“Sounds good Doc. Say how do you fund something like this? A lot of cash had to have gone into this place.

“My family has owned this house for ten generations. As for money, sound investment strategies over the past century have helped my family and myself considerably.” Charles told him. “Now that we have an idea of what your body is like, let's see what you can do shall we?”

“Lead on man.” Todd told him.

“He can cling to wall in a similar fashion to yourself Kurt.” Xavier said as the group watched Xander lead the newest mutant through a basic run through of the Danger Room. “He might make a decent training partner for yourself. With his and your increased dexterity and flexibility as well as your leaping ability you could make an impressive duo in combat.”

“You mean double teaming somebody?” Kurt asked.

“Exactly.” Xavier said with a nod. “If you don't mind, once this session is over could you go down there and try to give us a direct comparison.”

“Sure thing Professor.” Kurt said with a nod. “It should be fun to have someone keep up with me like that. Xander is a lot faster than I am.”

“He's worked hard to achieve his level of strength and speed Kurt. His mutation has helped though, for some reason he doesn't' lose any conditioning over time.” Xavier told him.

“You mean he doesn't have to keep working out to maintain his strength level? Lucky.” Scott said with a shake of his head. He had to keep to a strict regimen in order to gain strength without trying to pack on too much muscle. Even then, since he was still growing his muscle development needed to be done carefully.

“Yes, I too envy that ability Scott. If I had his or Logan's healing ability, I'd be able to walk again.” Xavier said. “We make do with what we have.”

“Have you asked Xander to see if he could heal your spine?” Jean asked him. “He helped Scott.”

“I'm afraid my abilities as a telepath would be counterproductive. There are times when I have to modify memories. That is in a sense taking away someone's free will. I... don't think the sword would agree with that. Not entirely anyways.” Xavier said. “I've been in this chair long enough to accept it.”

“Well, looks like I'm up.” Kurt said as Todd finished the run, looking a little winded. He teleported into the Danger Room and Xavier set up another program to determine their abilities when compared directly against each other.

“Man, you're pretty good.” Todd said to Kurt as they chased each other around the walls of the Danger Room.

“Thanks. You're doing well yourself.” Kurt told him as they both flipped down before scaling a raised section.

“Heh, no sweat.” Todd said. “Where'd you learn to do this stuff?”

“I was part of a traveling circus for a couple of years. The Amazing Nightcrawler.” Kurt said as he ran over some high wire with Todd trailing slowly behind him.

“You made that part look easy.” Todd said as he crossed the wire.

“Lots of practice. You'll get the hang of it.” Kurt told him.

“Hey, enough chitchat.” Xander called. “Time for dodging practice!”

“Crap.” Kurt said.

“What?” Todd said before leaping away from a fireball “Woah!” He cried.

“Relax, these are low heat ones.” Kurt said. “Though I have singed my tail once.”

“Just once!?” Todd screamed.

“Once is enough!” Kurt shouted before leaping again.

“Less talking, more dodging!” Xander called as he launched another group of faster, smaller fireballs at the teens.

“Whoo...” Todd said while wiping his brow. “No offense but your brother's a hardass.”

“He can be when it comes to training.” Kurt said as he rotated one of his shoulders. “It's worth it though.” He told the other teen before helping him stand up. “Besides, he's way easier than what Logan will put you through if you get on his bad side.”

“Oh.” Todd said. “Well, when is lunch?”

“After you shower again. No offense but you need a better deodorant.” Kurt told him while pinching his nose.

“I didn't really need one till today.” Todd muttered.

“Oh, sorry. At least you don't have to deal with all over frizzy hair.” Kurt told him.

“You could Nair yourself.” Todd suggested.

“But that would be really weird growing back in.” Kurt countered. “Come on, I'll port us up to the kitchen, we can get some lemonade.” He offered while putting a hand out.

“Sounds good.” Todd told him, taking the hand.

Xavier's Office...

“So, I have to ask why you've been donating so much to your sister.” Xavier said to Cordelia.

“She's my sister right? She can't even hold hands with a boy without hurting him. It's only been a little touch now and again. Besides, it isn't hurting me.” Cordelia argued.

“True. I've scanned Anna's memories and the fact that you're willingly donating to her has caused the psychic conflict of having two personas within her to be next to nothing. Anna's powers are still growing Cordelia. She's retaining you enhanced physical abilities. I would like you to cease donating for a while to see if she can keep the abilities she's received from you. If she can, then your sister may be able to retain any ability she absorbs.”

Cordelia's eyes widened. “That would make her....”

“I believe that was why Mystique wanted her. With enough powers, she'd be a walking... what's the word you would use... A walking apocalypse.” Xavier said quietly. “Her potential... may be unlimited.”

“I'll talk to her about it, okay?” Cordelia promised.

“Thank you Cordelia. Is there anything you wish to talk to me about while you're here?” Xavier asked her.

“Actually, yes. What can you recommend about estate management? I've way too much money just sitting around. Xander gives to charity, while I would rather have my money go to better use.”

“Actually, there are a few things I can do to help you out.” Xavier said with a smile.

“I've been doing some thinking on security.” Xander told Logan.

“When did you have time to do that?” Logan asked with a smirk.

“I only got about three hours of sleep. My mother can impersonate someone the whole way right? Retinal scans, fingerprints, voice analysis right?”

“Yeah. What have you got?” Logan asked him.

“Passwords. Well actually a whole bunch of Thunderian limericks. Ones that really aren't funny when translated into English.” Xander said.

“Well, say one.” Logan prompted.

Xander did.

“That was one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.” Logan told him before grinning. “What else have you got?”
Sunday Morning....

“You're doing what?” Todd asked him.

“Well Xander and I are going to church. You are free to come with if you wish.” Kurt told him.

“Seriously?” Todd asked him.

“Yep.” Kurt nodded. “I'm still getting used to the Episcopal services but it's not too bad.”

“You're a weird guy Kurt.” Todd said before snorting. “Would I have to dress up for this little shindig?”

“It's recommended, but not necessary.” Kurt said while trying to repress a grin.

“When are you going?” Todd asked.

“Twenty minutes.” Kurt said while looking at his watch.

Sunday night.....

“Man, this place is something else.” Todd said as he swam another lap in the pool.

“So is that a yes?” Xander asked him.

“For now man. For now.” Todd said.

“Great. There is another half to this story though. You know Principal Darkholme?” Xander asked him.

Todd looked at him. “What about her? She one of us?”

“She's part of the other side of the coin. Her... leader is more interested in having mutants rule over humans at this point. Kind of like the Nazis wanted.”

“I ain't in to hurtin' people.” Todd said. “Pain ain't exactly my thing. Even when I was stealing stuff nobody really got hurt.”

“She's a shapeshifter. Even if she turns into something big and scary, don't cave man. If she hurts you, I'll be there to step in okay?” Xander said while rubbing his arm.

“Yeah, all right.” Todd said before he resumed swimming laps.

Monday after school.

“Man, that woman is nuts.” Todd told Xander as he got into the van.

“She try to scare you?” Xander asked him

“Turned into this big blue alien looking thing. It was straight out of a B movie man. If you hadn't warned me I would have probably pissed myself.” Todd said with a shudder.

Kurt opened the door. “Ah man we can stop for a burger on the way home?” He asked his brother.

“Belly buster burger?” Xander asked him, already knowing the answer.

“They're an addiction.” Kurt said with a shrug.

“I could go for some grub. Say could we stop at a pet store too?” Todd asked.

“Sure.” Xander said with a nod. “Saddle up.”

After rewatching Episode one and checking out his character bio on Wikipedia, I decided Toad is a first class minion type. Odd loyalty to the ones who first help him out. In the show Mystique really strong armed him to the cause at first. He stuck around because he didn't have any real options.
