I don't own the X-Men, those belong to Marvel Comics and were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby
Emma Frost was created by Chris Claremont and John Bryne.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was created By Joss Whedon and all the characters with the BTVS TV series are his as well.
The Thundercats were created by Ted Wolf and currently belong to Warner Brothers, at one point in time Marvel comics did do a run of the them in comics form, although DC comics do them now.
AN: got two episodes switched in order they happened, this one technically should have happened before Speed and Spyke. But due to my screw up, this is how it's gonna go.
“You want me to go to Texas?” Jean asked the Professor on a Friday morning.
“Yes, there is a young mutant there that is displaying some fascinating abilities.” The Professor told her. “Logan will be your escort.”
“But Jean was going to go horseback riding with us.” Emma pouted. She'd convinced the girls that all of them needed to know how to ride a horse and there was a decent equestrian club not too far from the mansion.
“I'll go.” Xander offered. “Provided someone takes Kitty to temple on Saturday morning. I can teleport my van down there. Cordy and I drove through Texas during our big cross country road trip.”
“Can we go too?” Kurt asked while Todd nodded.. “I've never been to... well anywhere here in the US.”
“It's the Texas State Fair.” Xavier said. “A little late in the season I admit, but still. I trust you will be able to keep your brother and Todd in line?” He asked Xander.
“Sure.” Xander said with a grin. “We'll have a great time fellas.” He told them.
“Just remember you're going to recruit this young mutant.” Xavier cautioned.
“What's his name?” Xander asked.
“Frederick Dukes.” Xavier said as he handed Xander a printed poster. “But his stage name is 'The Blob'.”
“Man, I've got two words for this guy,” Todd said as he looked at the poster. “Slim Fast.”
“It might be part of his mutation.” Kurt countered.
Todd nodded. “I guess. Think you could pack a lunch for this thing?”
“And miss out on the wonderful carnival type food?” Kurt asked him.
“Trust me, you won't be missing much.” Todd told him.
“I'll pack you some soup okay?” Kurt told his roommate.
“Awesome. Thanks man.” Todd enthused.
“Hey kid, while you're there... Could you get me a new hat from this guy I know?” Logan asked Xander.
“Sure. Just give me the address.” Xander said. “Now then, the ride to school leaves in ten minutes. I want everyone ready to go. That means you too Evan.”
“Aww man.” Evan whined.
“Hey, school's important. You want to ditch so bad, you get your GED. Then you'll have all the time in the world.” Xander told him.
Evan perked up at that.
“Course if you get it, you'll have more time to master your powers.” Logan added.
Evan grumbled a bit before going to get his stuff.
That afternoon at lunch....
“You're crazy.” Emma told him.
“Am I?” Evan countered.
“You want me to download the information you need to pass the GED exam so you can skateboard more? Grow up Evan.” Emma snorted. “If you want to take the test, you study and prepare. I'm not going to help you cheat.”
“Fine.” Evan huffed.
“It's not like High School is a bad thing man.” Kurt said. “I like going here.”
“I'd rather be skateboarding.” Evan said. “I want to be a professional. As soon as I get the hang of my powers... I'm out of here.”
“What about your Aunt?” Jean asked him.
“Auntie 'Ro's great. I don't want to hurt her feelings, but I want to live my dream. Can you blame me for that?” Evan asked her.
Jean didn't answer.
Neither did anyone else at the table.
“We're going to Texas!” Kurt shouted at his roommate who threw a pillow at him.
“Man pipe down.” Todd muttered. “You really need to calm down some days.”
“Let's hit the showers so we can get ready!” Kurt said.
“Right.” Todd said before grabbing his supplies. Who knew that regular deodorant with baking soda in it would solve his little scent problem?
Kitty and Anna looked up as they heard singing.
“Kurt and Todd must be in the shower again.” Anna said to Kitty who sighed.
A third voice, in falsetto joined the other two.
“Sounds like Scott's in on the fun today.” Kitty said. “Will those guys ever grow up?”
“Then they'd be boring.” Anna said before stretching out on her bed. “Boring isn't fun.”
“Boring isn't so bad. I wouldn't mind a strong silent type guy.” Kitty said wistfully.
“With the way you talk he'd probably have to have a limited grasp on English as a language.” Anna told her.
Kitty huffed before throwing her pillow at her roommate. “Why you!”
Anna laughed as she dodged the pillow. “Don't you have temple soon?”
“Crap, I'm late!” Kitty said as she grabbed some clothes before phasing through her door to make a mad dash to the bathroom.
Anna chuckled before pulling the covers back up and snuggling into her bed. She had time to go back to sleep for a little while before the girls day out.
“What are you doing?” Cordelia asked her boyfriend as she caught him in front of the mirror of their mutual bathroom.
“Um... working on my invisibility? Trying to conceal only parts of myself.” Xander said as he held up an invisible hand.
“Why?” Cordelia asked him.
He showed her.
She snorted before laughing. “You are such a dweeb sometimes.” She told him. “Sometimes it's hard for me to remember why I love you.”
Xander faded from sight, well except for one part of him.
“Well there is that.” Cordelia said with a grin. “Come on, let's go play a little before you to to Texas.”
Xander was skipping happily down the hall as he made his way to the kitchens for a light snack. He encountered Todd and Kurt who were also headed towards the source of food and three teen link arms while singing the theme song from the TV show 'The Smurf's'.
Evan poked his head out from the library and snorted. He didn't have time to deal with silliness if he wanted to pass the GED pretest. He'd talked with his Aunt about it and was certain he wanted to become a professional skateboarder. As long as he kept up his regular school work, he could study this on the side until he passed. Sacrifices had to be made.
“Everybody loaded up?” Xander asked them as he fastened his seatbelt.
“Ready to go.” Kurt said while Todd clutched the thermos he'd filled with Kurt's soup.
“Cool I'm going to teleport us to a service road near a state rest stop I know of. It'll be a half hour drive from Houston proper.” Xander told them as he made the van and everything inside vanish from sight with a slight grunt of concentration. Moments later they were in Texas...
“Dude, this guy is awesome!” Todd said as he watched the teen known as The Blob pull together two Monster Trucks before leaping up to jump onto the two truck beds.
It was an impressive sight, at least until the kid accidentally stumbled causing the majority of the crowd to laugh at him.
“Whoa, guy's got a temper.” Todd declared.
“I don't like be laughed at either.” Kurt said.
“Kurt's right. Let's see if we can talk to him before mom does.” Xander said as he stared down a couple of rows at the back of Principal Darkholme's head.
“Shit, she's here? Man that's not good.” Todd whined. “No offense guys, but your mom can be pretty scary.”
“None taken.” Kurt and Xander said with a grin.
“Come on, let's go before the rodeo clowns get out here.” Xander said as he stood.
“Seriously? Those guys are great.” Todd protested.
“But not why we're here.” Xander reminded him.
“Didn't you once tell me you were afraid of clowns?” Kurt asked.
“We're going.” Xander said firmly while Kurt and Todd snickered at him.
Xander walked with Todd and Kurt following behind him towards the changing area that was under the stands. As they were about to walk into the dressing room where Fred Dukes was at, Raven Darkholme closed the door on them.
Xander growled. “She's gotten to him first.”
“That's that then.” Todd said with a shrug. “We tried.”
Xander looked up and down the hall checking to see if it was clear. It was. “Hang on.” He said to them. Both teens put an arm on him and they faded from sight as Xander teleported them into the room.
Xander and the others watched as Mystique began her recruitment speech, offering the kid a chance to go back to school where he wouldn't be made fun of.
He chuckled as he released his hold on his invisibility, letting him and the others be seen. “Never thought you'd play the sympathy card mom.” He said to his mother.
“Cheshire, is that you?” Mystique asked. “I've never seen your... real face.”
“What's goin' on?” Fred asked. “You sure you guys ain't with a circus? That was some magic trick.”
“No trick.” Xander said. “Just an ability of mine. Like this one.” He said before his body sprouted his usual fur.
“Now I know you're with the circus.” Fred laughed.
“No, we're part of a school that helps people our age deal with their abilities.” Kurt said. “She just wants to have you on her team. We would like to help you better understand your powers and how they work.”
“So they can defeat you.” Mystique said as she reverted to her natural form.
“Says the winner of the 'mother of the year award.'” Kurt snorted before turning off his image inducer. “The two of us are half brothers.” He said while pointing between himself and Xander. “The first time we really spoke to her, our mother was a couple of months ago. You really want to sign up under a lady that abandons things that aren't useful to her?”
“There were circumstances in both of those situations beyond my control.” Mystique nearly shouted.
“But you left your adopted daughter, Anna Marie behind too.” Todd said from where he was perched on a wall.
Fred looked at him.
“Hey, don't mind me. I'm not part of the family feud over there. I do live at the same place as these guys. It's not bad. Three squares a day, help with my homework if I need it, some cute girls to look at.” Todd said before unscrewing the cap to his thermos filled with Kurt's soup. “If you'll ignore me, I'm gonna take my lunch.” He said as he poured himself a cup.
Fred sniffed the air as the scent of the soup began to fill the cramped dressing room. “That's... it's not chicken soup... it's... Hey is that crow's foot soup?” Fred asked.
“How can you tell?” Kurt asked, curious.
“When you've traveled around like I have, you eat some weird things. So let's go somewhere less crowded and talk huh? After you guys... normal up?” Fred suggested while eying Todd's soup.
Mystique pinched the bridge of her nose as she realized that Cheshire was the one who'd been driving that god awful van around the school.
“Hop in folks, mom you too.” Xander said. “I know a place that has some decent eating and some sturdy seating.” He offered.
“You paying?” Fred asked.
“Yes.” Xander and Mystique said at the same time before glaring at each other.
“Trust me... Cheshire's got it.” Todd said.
“But my rental car is.... somewhere in this mess.” Mystique said while gesturing at the parking lot.
“I'll drop you back here, both of you if Fred decides to head to Bayville with you.” Xander offered.
“You'd truly do that?” Mystique asked, confused.
“Of course.” Xander and Kurt said.
“My brother is an honorable man.” Kurt said firmly.
“Then he is a fool.” Mystique declared.
“Yo! Everybody get in the freaking van already!” Todd yelled.
They got in and Xander drove for about thirty minutes before pulling into a restaurant parking lot.
“Woah, this place is pricey!” Fred said as he looked at the sign.
“It's also known for it's privacy.” Xander said as he stopped the van. “Let's go everybody.” He told them after he undid his seatbelt.
Xander got out first and helped Fred down from the cargo section of the van. Fred nodded at the older teen who managed to help him out without straining himself.
“You're strong.” Fred told him.
“I try to be.” Xander said with a shrug. “Come on, I'll get us a private room.” He said while the others got out of the car.
Mystique didn't say anything, her son was exuding confidence and every minuted in his presence was telling her more about him.
Less than fifteen minutes later the group of five were in a private dining room and their orders had been taken. Fred was perched on two sturdy oak chairs while the others were sitting on one of their own.
“So, why recruit me?” Fred asked.
“Well you're like a walking tank.” Todd summed up for both parties.
“Yes, you would make a formidable fighter.” Mystique agreed. “But you shouldn't listen to their lies Blob.”
“My name is Fred.” Fred declared. “And I don't know if they're lying or not.”
“Look, we have a fair bit to offer you. A chance to greater understand your abilities, a place to stay and a growing number of other mutants to socialize with. If high school doesn't suit you, we can get you enrolled in a GED program or something.” Xander told him.
“I don't like school. At my last one, people kept laughing at me.” Fred told him.
“I get that you don't like people laughing at you. Sometimes it can't be helped though. You laugh at the Three Stooges right?” Xander asked.
“Yeah.” Fred said.
“Well when you have an accident like you did at the show, people will laugh. It's slapstick comedy.” Xander said. “We can help you be... less awkward.”
“They want to keep you tame Fred. Control you.” Mystique told him. “With me you can use your powers to get what you want.”
“Instead of working for it. You worked hard to get your reputation in the circuit right?” Xander asked him.
“Yeah I did.” Fred nodded. “It wasn't easy.”
“But was it worth it?” Kurt asked.
“It was.” Fred said softly.
“There you go then.” Todd said before tossing up the last bread stick and snatching it with his tongue. “The food should be getting here soon guys. Which is good, cause I am hungry.”
A few minutes later food showed up and the group ate in relative silence.
Once the meal was over the group left the restaurant.
“Well Fred?” Xander asked him as they parked back at the fair grounds.
“Can I see the places I'd be staying first before I make my decision on which one I go to?” Fred asked.
“Sure.” Xander said amicably while Mystique glowered at him. “Let's let Mystique take her rental car back and we can all head back together.”
They followed Mystique in her car to the rental place and let her return it.
“And away we go.” Xander said as he got the car into a secluded area before teleporting it into the driveway of the Brotherhood house.
“Why here first?” Mystique asked.
“You think I'm going to let you into Xavier's even if you're escorted?” Xander asked her with a raised eyebrow.
She huffed as Todd and Kurt tried to help Fred out of the back of the van. Tried being the operative word.
“Who's the fatty?” Pietro asked from the front porch.
“Easy...” Xander cautioned to Fred who looked like he was about to explode in rage.
“But he...” Fred protested.
“You fool!” Mystique shouted at Pietro.
“What's the other place like?” Fred asked, no longer trying to get out of the van.
“Bigger than here, but with more people.” Xander said softly. “I can't promise you better treatment right off.”
“Let's go see that one.” Fred said with a defeated tone.
“Buck up big guy.” Todd said. “Xavier's place is like a slice of heaven.”
“Except during some of the training sessions.” Kurt said.
“Hey!” Xander said.
“Dude, you can be a hardass. Some of us actually get tired.” Toad told him.
Xander sighed. “In the van then.” He told Kurt and Todd before shutting the trunk.
As they drove off Xander caught Mystique verbally berating Pietro for causing her to lose another recruit.
“Man this place is big!” Fred said as he got out of the Van.
“Everybody says that when they get here.” Todd said with a laugh as he hopped up onto Fred's shoulder. “I'll be your tour guide if that's okay?”
“Sure.” Fred said with a shrug that almost knocked Todd off his perch.
“Well, this is the front door.” Todd said. “It's not the main door we use since there's a connected garage.” Todd explained as Xander let them in the building.
“Exceptional strength and unusually sturdy epidermal layer.” Xavier said as he examined the studies that Fred had volunteered for. “Your cells have an unusually fast replication rate causing a slightly increased metabolism. However, you've a large supply of body fat as well. If you were on a slightly modified diet, there is a decent chance the weight will practically fall off.” He finished as he looked at Fred.
“Really? I can be thin?” Fred asked him.
“It will take some serious effort and some sacrifices on your part, but yes.” Xavier said with a soft smile.
“That's great.” Fred said. “But I'm not gonna starve or anything am I?”
“No. In the meantime, we can get you some specialized furniture so you don't have to worry about collapsed chairs.” Xavier told him.
“That's good. Thanks Professor.” Fred said gratefully.
“It's why we're here Fred.” Xavier said softly. “Now let's get above ground, it's time for dinner.”
“Great.” Fred grinned. “I am kind of hungry.” he said with a soft chuckle.
“Fred, welcome to the Xavier institute.” Scott said as he offered his hand to the larger teen.
“Thanks man. Professor Xavier told me that we're going to be roommates since we're the same age.” Fred said.
“What?” Scott asked, getting a little tense.
“It's your turn Scott.” Jean said with a smile.
“I'm not that bad am I?” Emma asked her roommate.
“Do you really want me to answer that?” Jean said.
“Nevermind.” Emma sighed.
“So what now?” Pietro asked.
“Since it seems our number is going to be limited... We're going to start on teaching the two of you teamwork.” Mystique said with a sinister tone.
“Oh crap.” Xander muttered at the table.
“What is it?” Cordelia asked.
“I forgot to pick up Logan's hat.” Xander said with a sigh. “Oh well.”
