Chapter 36:

“He's pushing himself too hard.” Storm said as she watched her nephew run through a solo simulation in the danger room in near record time.

“His grades are doing good right?” Logan asked her.

“Better than before he transferred. He actually passed the GED pretest. I'm worried that we're losing him Logan.” Ororo said as she placed a hand on the glass of the control window.

“He's getting control, though kid's got some rage in him. Might end bad for him.” Logan said.

“What do you mean?” Ororo asked.

“When he gets angry the bones come out. What if he stays angry?” Logan asked.

“Let's just pray it won't come to that. I don't think he'd forgive me.” Ororo said sadly.

“It hasn't happened. It might not. He's following a dream, just way earlier than most people. Most professional skateboarders don't go to college.” He told her. “I've been researching it, he might just pull it off.”

“He came here to learn Logan.” Ororo said.

“He is.” Logan countered.

The Telepath's room....

“So you and Scott are going on that field trip right?” Emma asked Jean.

“Yes, it should be real fun.” Jean said with a smile.

“Are you going to ask him out?” Emma wondered.

“Yes, fine! I will ask him out on the field trip.” Jean half screamed at her roommate.

“Good.” She said with a nod. “Be sure to dress warmly, it'll get cold up there.”

“What are you going to be doing while I'm gone?” Jean asked her.

“You know, this and that.” Emma said in a sing song.

“Like taking care of those roots?” Jean teased.

“What I thought I....” She said before catching herself. “How did you know?”

“You can't fool Xander's nose.” Jean reminded her.

“I swear he's worse than my uncle's crotch sniffing dog.” Emma said, “Well you know without the actual crotch sniffing, because that would be weird.”

“And you wouldn't mind it.” Jean told her.

“Not in his case at least no. But sadly, he's taken.” Emma said with an overly dramatic sigh. “Think Cordelia would rent him out?”

“Nope.” Jean told her. “Doubt it's happening. Besides if anyone got a shot at him, it would probably be Anna.”

“The Succubus?” Emma snorted. “Right.”

“She's got most of Cordelia's memories. We were all pretty surprised when the abilities she'd gained from Cordelia didn't fade. The Professor is pretty reluctant in letting her touch anyone else because of that.”

“Doesn't want too much power in one mutant?” Emma asked with raised eyebrows.

“You know the saying, it's truer with telepaths but it still fits.” Jean said as she began to go through her closet and came out with a shirt that she held up and looked at Emma who shook her head.

Rolling her eyes Jean went in to get something else to wear.

The Grounds....

“Come on Fred, you can do this!” Scott said to the huffing teen.

“Man, this is too far.” Fred panted.

“We went farther than this yesterday.” Scott told him. “Just ten minutes more, then we can do some basic exercises. You've been making great progress.”

“Thanks.” Fred panted. “I've got a stitch in my side.”

“We can stop for a bit.” Scott told him. “You're doing great. I wasn't able to run this far until after way more training than what you've done.”

“It helps that I've lost sixty pounds.” Fred said. “I don't want to be the Blob anymore.”

“You've been doing great man. I can't believe how much you've lost.” Scott told him.

“The diet they put me on is working. Just wish I could cheat now and again.” Fred sighed.

“Well at least your stomach has shrunk some right?” Scott said.

“For now. What if I fall off the wagon?” Fred asked.

“We'll be there to help you when you do.” Scott told him. “How you feel?”

“Like I could run some more.” Fred grinned. “Let's go.”

The gym.....

“Good kids.” Logan said with a nod as the four of them leaped in unison and performed the same advanced kata.

“Progress.” Xander said with a grin as he watched the four of the 'leaping team' practice.

“Yep. They'll be ready for full contact sparring in a few months.” Logan said with a hint of a smirk.

“Super.” Xander said. “You need me to do anything?”

“Could stop by the hardware store and pick up the order I made.” Logan told him.

“Still pissed about getting the hat late aren't you?” Xander sighed.

“Yep.” Logan smirked.

Xander sighed. “I'm going.”

“Good.” Logan said before calling out. “Todd, stop staring at Anna's ass and focus on your stance!”

Xander chuckled before teleporting to the garage.

Xander parked the van in the schools parking lot. He honestly didn't know why he was here other than a feeling. He was about to put the van back into drive and leave but he felt something tingle in his left arm.

He looked around to make sure the parking lot was clear before moving to the rear part of the van. He summoned his claw sheath for the first time in weeks. He withdrew the sword and looked into it's pommel and saying “Sword of Omens, Give me Sight Beyond Sight!”

Xander watched images of a Native American teen dressed in retro clothing working in an advanced science lab. He saw him fiddle with a device and become trapped in it.

Xander blinked as the images faded. He turned on his communicator watch. “Logan, its Xander. Get everyone that's good with tech ready to go will you?”

“What's up kid?”

“Believe it or not I had a vision of sorts.” Xander said with a laugh.

“I'll have the Toad and the half-pint ready to go.” Logan told him before signing off.

Xander grinned. “Thanks Logan.” He murmured before teleporting back to the mansion.

“So what's up?” Todd asked him as he fiddled with a voltmeter.

“Thing at the school. I wanted our tech people to check it out. Some kid got trapped in an energy wave or something. I can't tell you much more than that right now.” Xander said.

“Let's go man.” Todd said as Kitty came in wearing an tool belt filled with various implements.

“Hang on.” Xander said as he offered them both a hand and had them crouch down. The reappeared in Xander's van. “Let's go.” He told them as he opened the trunk of the van to let them all out.

They walked around the school until Xander found the exterior basement entrance that he'd seen in his vision.

They stepped into the lab and all of them paused as they noticed the basic security system that had been installed.

“Yo, I got this.” Todd said before flipping over the infrared beam and connecting a wire to the two halves of it and doing... something to a box he'd brought with him. “Easy.” Todd said with a grin.

“For the first step yeah.” Kitty said as she went up to the main console. Touching one button the whole set up came to life. “Crap.” Kitty said before she tore off a panel and began bypassing something by attaching wires to what looked like an old hard drive. “Right, got it.” She told them with a grin.

She began bringing up files and browsing through them. “Wow this stuff is ancient. This guy built this back in before the PC boom.” She said in awe. “This kid's name was Forge. He was working on an invention that would create a pocket dimension. I think there's a video of the experiment.” Kitty told them before playing it.

The three watched the scene in horror as the teen was consumed by his own experiment.

“Let's take a look at this.” Todd said before going over to the device that had caused all the trouble.

“It's emitting some type of radiation.” Kitty said as she looked at it. “We could reset it, that should cancel out the pocket dimension. There's a small chance it'll just erase him from existence.” She ended nervously.

“Any other options?” Xander asked.

“Nope.” Kitty said while Todd confirmed. “It's an antique despite how advanced it is. We can't do much without some seriously modified equipment.”

“Let's do it then.” Xander told them.

Kitty and Todd fiddled with the device a little before setting it to reset.

“Here it goes in 3, 2, 1....” Kitty said before a crimson sphere of energy engulfed the lab with the same kid from his vision in the center of it. There was a small hole in the energy field but it was closing quickly.

Xander teleported into the field and grabbed the kid before teleporting out.

“Thanks.” The kid said. “I'm Forge. Who are you guys and how did you bypass my security?” He asked them.

“That 'ol thing? Please, it was easy peasy.” Todd said while buffing his fingernails on his shirt.

“Really? Has technology improved that much in the twenty four year I've been stuck in there?” Forge asked.

“Mostly, but not for the general public.” Xander said. “How'd you develop all this stuff anyways?” Xander asked him.

“Technology and me get along pretty well.” Forge said as his arm transformed into a blend of mechanical and organic parts.

“Wow, so you're a mutant too!” Kitty said. “Neat!”

“Is that what we're called?” Forge asked. “There's a lot I need to catch up on.”

“We'll help you.” Xander told him. “We can even help you find your family if you want.”

“That would be... great. Thank you.” Forge said. “Let me destroy the lab and let's get out of here.”

“Destroy it? Why?” Kitty asked.

“If you guys can bypass the security, so can other people if they stumble on this place.” Forge said seriously. “I won't be long.” He told them.

Nodding, Xander gestured for the other teens to follow him out of the basement. Kitty and Todd followed him reluctantly.

A few minutes later Forge came out of the basement. A muffled boom later the teen was ready to go. “So where did you guys park?” Forge asked.

Xander led the group to his van. They all piled in while Forge's arm began examining the van. “Nice composite metal, this thing must be pretty sturdy.” Forge said as Xander started up the van. “Did you know it's been bugged?” Forge asked.

“What?” Xander said while turning around.

“Your van, it's subtle but it's been bugged.” Forge said to Xander. “You didn't know?”

“No.” Xander growled.

The radio of the van came on. “Doom finds you adequate Alexander Harris. Stop by his Embassy in New York when you have the chance.” The radio stated before shutting off.

“The bugs...” Forge said. “They've self destructed. Your van's clean. Who's this Doom guy?”

“He's a dictator of a small European nation that tussles with a recent super group in New York from time to time. He's a technological genius.” Todd told him. “But why is he interested in you?” He asked Xander.

“Dunno.” Xander said before pulling the van out of the parking lot. “Something to worry about at a later date. I guess I might have to call somebody who can tell me more about him.” he sighed. “Let's go back to the institute. I still need to drop off the stuff Logan had me pick up at the hardware store.”

“Are your days ever boring?” Todd asked him.

“Generally, no.” Xander told him before looking in the rear view mirror. “Forge, buckle up. It's the law.”

“Wow, things have changed.” Forge said before buckling his seatbelt.

“So what was it like in that pocket dimension?” Todd asked him.

“It was hell. It ended just before the girl's locker room.” Forge said with a faraway look in his eyes.

“Man, I sympathize.” Todd said before Kitty smacked him in the arm.

“Man, this is pretty good.” Forge said as he finished his second sandwich. “Who made this?”

“Fred did.” Xander told him. “He can't eat as much as he used to, but he's still useful in the kitchen. Him and Kurt do most of the cooking.”

“Kurt's the blue fuzzy one with the tail right?” Forge asked.

“Yeah.” Xander agreed. “We can let you use the Internet here to see if you can locate your parents. It'll be a lot easier than looking through microfiche at the library. Trust me, I know.”

“Thanks.” Forge said. “I wonder what they've been up to since I disappeared. It's been almost thirty years. I hope they're okay.”

“Listen, if you need a place, you can have one here.” Xander told him. “If that isn't cool I can set you up with an apartment or something somewhere.”

“Thanks for the offer, why are you being so... nice?” Forge asked him.

“You're a man out of time. Least I can do is help you out.” Xander said with a shrug. “Do unto others and all that.”

“Is everyone this nice in the future?” Forge asked him.

“No, people are still selfish and petty most of the time.” Xander told him. “Way of the world.”
A few days later....

“Is Forge still here?” Xavier asked Xander.

“Yeah, he's holed up in a guest room. He was doing an Internet search for his parents but he got distracted.” Xander told the Professor.

“By what?” Xavier asked him.

“Internet Porn. He made his way through the software block in like two minutes. He's been in there ever since.”

“Oh dear.” Charles said.
