Chapter 43:

SHIELD Stealth plane over Irish Airspace...

“What's with the fancy gun?” Sean Cassidy asked Captain America as the man loaded said weapon.

“It's a new tranquilizer gun. It's made completely out of plastics and uses a new formula that can even knock me for a loop. I'd prefer retrieving your daughter with as minimal bloodshed as possible. That can't be done with bullets.” Captain America told him. “We're nearing the drop zone. Remember this is a stealth mission. Curb your voice.”

“I know.” Cassidy growled. “When I get my hands on Tom...”

“You'll do nothing. We've tinkered with the formula of this tranquilizer boosted it with something else. It also interferes with memory retention. He won't remember what's about to happen.” Cap said. “We're here for your daughter. No more, no less. You try to use that little scream of yours and You'll be knocked out just like your cousin.”

“Fine.” Cassidy growled.

“Good, now put on your chute.” Cap told him. “We're dropping in five.”

Cassidy Keep, County Mayo. Ireland

The two men hit the ground rolling as they disconnected and repacked their parachutes. They stashed them under a Gorse shrub. The two men ran along the interior of the stone wall surrounding the keep before they picked the lock of the front door of the keep. The ancient door opened with a minmal amount of noise. The two men crept inside and began climbing the stairs that went up to the sleeping quarters in the building.

Sean knew which room that his cousin would have taken so he and Captain America began searching the others for his daughter. They found her on the third room they searched. Unfortunately, she was awake and waiting for them. As they got to the door it was blown off by a powerful wail.

The two men threw the door off of themselves as the girl prepared another sonic attack. Sean was about to counter scream for scream but Captain America was quicker to act with his tranquilizer gun. The girl was unconscious by the time Sean reached the bed.

“Did you have to do that?” Sean asked the super soldier.

“She was hostile, considering the circumstances I don't blame her. Grab her. We're leaving.” He told him as he kept an eye on the stairs. That scream would have awakened the keeps other resident..

Sean glared at the man before picking up his daughter. He headed towards the door just as Captain America ducked an energy blast.

“It's Tom! He's awake!” Sean said.

“Not for long.” Cap said as he returned fire. A few seconds later he nodded. “He's out. House is clear. Let's head to the rendezvous point.”

“Thanks for this.” Sean said quietly.

“I'm following orders. Though if I had a daughter hidden from me, I'd do the same.” Cap told him.

Muir Island....

“Are we really going?” Rahne Sinclair asked her adoptive mother, Moira MacTaggert.

“We are. We're mothballing the center for a while. It will give both you and Kevin a chance to interact with others like yourselves.” Moira told her with a soft smile. “There's a chance that Xavier and his people can help Kevin more than what I've been able to do on my own.”

“It isn't his fault he's like this.” Rahne told her.

“I know. If anyone is to be blamed for it, it's his bastard father.” Moria said. “Anyways, the man Xavier's sending should be here soon. Have you packed all your things?”

Rahne nodded. “It'll be different won't it?”

“Times are changing dear. It's best we change with them.” She said as the doorbell rang. “That'll be him.”

“I'll get it.” Rahne said, running off towards the door. She opened the door and literally pounced on the stranger, shifting into her red wolf form as she did so.

Xander threw the girl off him and flipped back onto his feet. “I'm not an enemy.” He said to the growling wolf who suddenly looked contrite.

The wolf suddenly changed into an embarrassed looking redhead. “Sorry. You smell like a cat. I got a little excited.”

“It's fine. Just don't go doing that on a regular basis. People might take you pouncing them the wrong way.” Xander said with a soft smile. “Are Mrs. MacTaggert and Kevin inside?”

“Yes. Kevin's still in his room though. That'll be the last thing we shut down.” Rahne told him.

“The Isoteric energy unit. Right. We've already got a room set up for him at Xavier's and I've brought the portable unit with me.” Xander told her. “We can rig him with it right now if it's okay. Forge says the battery should last three hours on the outside.”

“Kevin hasn't left his room for as long as I've known him.” Rahne said softly. “Come on.” She said as she entered the home.

Nodding, Xander followed her.

“That's supposed to keep my son fed for three hours?” Moira asked him as he showed her the harness.

“It's the best we could come up with.” Xander defended.

“But it's so small!” Moria said. “There is no way that has enough isoteric energy to feed him for twenty minutes let alone three hours. It'd be better to just hook him up to a car battery.”

“Forge does good work.” Xander said. “This will work.”

She looked at him. “Fine. We'll try it out. If it doesn't fail in the first five minutes, we'll take Kevin out of his room.”

“That's all I ask.” Xander told her.
“It's bright!” Kevin said as he shielded his eyes.

“Not really. You're just not used to sunlight.” Xander told him. “I've got to start teleporting the stuff over to Xavier's. You going to be okay out here?” He asked him.

“I'll keep an eye on him.” Rahne told him. “Least I can do.” She said

“Hmm.” Xander said before he headed inside to begin transferring the packed belongings before tackling the larger equipment that Moira couldn't be without.

SHIELD Helicarrier:

Theresa Cassidy opened her eyes and found herself in a strange room. The last thing she remembered was going to bed. She listened. The room was humming with an odd vibration, and there were voices just beyond a mirror.

“She's awake.” Captain America said. “She looks confused. Think she knows who you are?”

“It's possible. Tom might have told her that I abandoned her. As far as I knew Maeve was still pregnant when that IRA bomb killed her. I was undercover with Interpol at the time. He kept her from me. My own daughter. We should have done more than just knocked him out.” Sean growled..

“We were to retrieve your daughter. Once she's aware of the situation you'll both be headed to Xavier's school. Hopefully she won't hold a grudge.” Cap told him.

“We'll see.” Sean said as he stared at his daughter. “I think she can hear us.”

“Crap.” Steve whispered.

“Well that explains that.” Theresa said to herself as the door opened and a tall auburn haired man entered the room.

“You heard I take it?” He asked her.

“Tom hates you, you know.” She told him. “He doesn't like me much either these days.”

“Why?” Sean asked.

“I remind him too much of my mother.” She said. “So what's this Xavier place?”

“It's a school for mutants.” Sean told her. “A place where we can be ourselves among others like us. The people here want me to be their eyes and ears.”

“A spy?” She asked, curious.

“No. The school is run by a powerful telepath. He'll know what I'm up to. I'm more of an informal informant. If something pops up that the average SHIELD team can't handle, it'll be up to me to try and convince the people there to help out.” Sean told her.

“And me?” She asked.

“My price for the task. I signed up because they knew where you were.” He told her. “You were the lure.”

“Great. What were you doing before this?” She asked.

“I was a detective in Hell's kitchen in Manhattan.” He told her. “Can you tell me about yourself?” He asked her.

Theresa smiled. “Sure.”

Steve smiled as he watched father and daughter interact. He left the room and headed up to Fury's office.

“Well?” Nick asked him.

“They're in.” Steve said. “She's not what I expected.”

“She might be more angry if she remembered being attacked.” Nick reminded him.

“Yeah. That tranquilizer worked great. Where'd you guys get the formula?” Steve asked.

“A mutual acquaintance of ours.” Nick grinned. “Right now they're working on a side project for me when they have the time.”

“What's that?” Steve asked.

“Anti-Gamma rays.” Nick said. “Well in layman's terms anyways. You up for another task?”

“Depends on the task.” Steve told him.

“I want you to think about starting up a team of your own.” Nick told him. “You'll start getting files on possible recruits in about a month.”

“I'll think about it.” Steve said. “No promises though.”

Fury nodded. He knew he had him.

Xavier Institute

“Thank you for this Charles.” Moira said as she watched her son being chased by Rahne in her wolf form around the grounds.

“The harness also acts a a psionic dampener.” Charles told her. “That's part of why the batteries last as long as they do. It turns some of his own energy against him. Had his X-factor expressed itself just a little differently he'd be much better off. How long has he been isolated?”

“Almost five years now.” Moira said quietly. “I, god help me I've been considering just calling him Mutant X instead of Kevin.”

“In another world he could have been our son.” Charles said softly.

“I know. But things happened Charles. We can't go back to the way we were.” Moira said. “So how are things over here?”

“Getting better by the day.” He told her with a smile. “Now about this cloning idea of yours...”

Parker Household....

“Peter, you've got some mail!” May Parker called up to her nephew.

“Really?” Peter asked as he poked his head out of his bedroom door.

“Yes, something from a school for gifted youngsters.” May said. “Is there something you wish to tell me?”

“I haven't applied to anything Aunt May honest.” Peter said.

“Does this have to do with... your other side?” She asked cautiously. She hadn't taken finding out her nephew was Spider-Man very well but she was accepting it slowly.

“Maybe.” Peter told her as he opened the envelope. He read the contents. “I've been invited to study under Dr. Moira MacTaggert! This is incredible! She's one of the world's foremost geneticists!”

“Will this count towards class credit?” May asked him.

“No, but it will still look good on a college application. She's puts Doctor Connors to shame!” He said. “This is great... this means... I'd have to leave the city.” He paused. “and Mary Jane.”

“What's that photo taped to the back?” May asked him.

Peter turned the letter around. On the back was a photo of Cheshire's face sticking his tongue out at him.

“Interesting. So that's where he lives.” Peter said. “This is the guy who gave us the money.” He told his aunt.

May stared at the photo of the tiger man. “Isn't this the one who played golf with that Doom fellow?”

“He knows some weird people Aunt May. I'm going to call the number and see what this is about.” Peter said before heading to the phone to find out what was going on.

“Mr. Parker.” Charles Xavier said into the phone. “It's nice to hear from you. No the offer is valid. I'm giving you a chance to study what has happened to you on a genetic level as well as offer you training in a safe environment. I understand it's quite a commute from your usual area but it is only for six weeks this summer. In the mean time I'm sure that two of our people in the city can anonymously take care of any foes of yours that crop up. One summer to understand the physical side of your powers is all I ask. Yes your aunt and your friend would be welcome as well. We can offer her some summer tutoring. In fact I happen to know more than a few people who can help coach her acting skills. Yes. We'll send someone to pick you all up next week.”

Fred looked up from his book. “He wants us to do what?” he asked his girlfriend.

“He wants us to live in Manhattan for the summer. Xander's already gotten us a basement apartment.” She told him.

“Sounds cramped.” Fred said as he put his book down.

“Think cozy.” She told him. “It's just so he can allow a costumed guy here for a while. Besides, it'll give us a chance to have fun in the big city.”

“What do your parents think about it?” Fred asked.

“Just as long as I don't end up pregnant they aren't too concerned at this point.” Emma told him. “I'm a shining star compared to my brother at this point. I may be away from home but at least I'm not in rehab.” She sighed. “I guess the pressure got to him.”

“Could be fun.” Fred mused. “All right I'm in. Give me a chance to tussle with some big ones.”
Forge's Lab, Subbasement 2

“Think you guys can keep the tech up to specs while we're gone?” Forge asked Todd and Kitty.

“We like totally got it!” Kitty assured him. “You just have fun on this trip while you're recruiting more of us. Be sure to bring back some cute ones.”

“Right.” Todd said. “Make sure one of them is fun huh? Can't have a whole lot of sticklers coming in.”

“I'll do what I can. I've got to finish some adjustments in level three then I have to pack.” Forge told him.

“That new guy Kevin? He's... different.” Todd said.

“He's been locked in a cell for the past five years. It's a miracle he isn't crazy.” Forge said. “I sympathize with him to be honest.”

“Fine, no hazing.” Todd said with a huff.

Kitty and Anna's room:

“So where all are we going this summer?” Anna asked her sister.

“Here and there. The three main places the professor wants us to stop at are Roanoake Virginia, Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Beverly Hills California. We're going to stop some other places as well but those are the main spots.” Cordelia told her.

“We still going to Vegas?” Anna asked.

“Yep.” Cordelia said.

“Does Xander suspect?” She grinned.

“Not yet.” Cordelia told her. “Don't tell him.”

“I won't.” Anna promised.

Victor Von Doom stared at the body growing inside the pod. It had been easy enough to get a DNA sample from that photographer. The boys genes were amazing and full of untapped potential. While he hated Richards and rightly blamed the man for his scarred appearance, it didn't mean he wasn't seeking alternatives. This was the latest project. Once the body was aged to the level he wanted and the DNA stabilized and the body's longevity assured from what he'd gleaned from Cheshire's sample he would have a body worth inhabiting. The body fit for the king he was. Doom the Ageless.

Long live Doom.

Sean and Theresa Cassidy stared at the gates of the Xavier institute.

“It's big, but nowhere near as beautiful as the Keep.” Theresa said to her father.

“Aye, few things have the same beauty as home does.” Sean agreed. “We'll take it back from him one day. Until then... let's see what this place has to offer us.”
